The scene with Karl and Anders in the Chantry got me thinking about tranquil. I thought it was a little strange that Karl would go along with the Templar's plan. Even if he didn't have any emotions left and couldn't care about Anders, shouldn't he still need a reason to do anything?

We hear a tranquil mage in the Gallows state that Knight-Captain Cullen commands her now... so I don't think Karl was off the mark when he said he didn't want to be a "templar puppet" anymore.

We don't actually know how the Rite of Tranquility works, do we? Supposedly if you do the Wayward Son thing, killing a mage in the Fade makes them Tranquil. Maybe the Circle is all like "It's time for your uh...Harrowing. Yeah, Harrowing. Go on into the Fade..." <30 mages already lurking in The Fade to gangbang hapless other mage when he gets there>

It involves somehow using a lyrium brand to cut off the Fade connection...but I like your idea much better.

Which just reminds me, I still don't get why Feynriel has that same brand if he was killed in the Fade.

Tattoo so he matches?  Branding him anyway for good measure?

Ugh, he does? I didn't do that on my playthrough. Now I won't ever because it'll annoy me (unless somebody comes out with a mod to fix that).

Unless he ends up going back to The Circle (in which case, I can see the "just to be safe" thing actually happening).

That.

Mages are nothing if not fashionable...or at least what they percieve to be fashionable.

Well, I am talking about Feynriel in the Circle. I've not killed him when he's with the Dalish so I don't know what happens in that case.
So I suppose the fitting in idea works.

I wonder what the whole point of the branding thing is in Kirkwall, anyway. Ferelden tranquil didn't have that ridiculous brand, so why do they have it in Kirkwall? Is there a different process of being made tranquil that's being used here? That might explain why the Kirkwall tranquil seem to be more subservient than the Ferelden tranquil. Is it just some form of continued persecution even after making them tranquil?

I assumed that's a visual retcon, like the elves.

This is what I'm thinking, too.
