After seven years of dealing with demons, blood mages, and abominations, Hawke should have at least noticed it. I mean, the first thing I noticed during Meredith's debate with Orsino in Act 3 was that her sword looked scary.

To be sure, it's an evil-looking sword. It has a skull at the tip and has red veins of metal running through it.

My mage had a staff with a skull on it for almost all of act 1. He doesn't judge.

Which is strange considering it doesn't shine at all.

I am curious though IF I was a developer and made a game that did amazing then sat down making a sequel surely I would want to better my last game...It almost feels like developers these days don't look at previous games and just blindly make a sequel hoping for the best.
Thankfully Bethesda do not use such methods otherwise we would see a new Elder Scrolls game a little too often...

I know right? I mean right at the beginning of Act 2, you can clearly see that the Arishok has a tattoo on his arm that says "Kill Viscount". How can Hawke be so blind?

Well I don't like TES. If this ruins a game for you..well. Honestly? I didn't even think it was the idol. Did you notice it was the idol until she revealed that it was? If not, then why should Hawke? He/she was obviously too occupied stroking his/her beard to notice.
It was a mighty fine beard.

We know she had a secret mage fetish, so it is possible. You could feel the tension between her and Orsino.

Wouldn't magehawke be able to detect its lyriumness?
Possibly Varric should too.
But maybe that's only if you touch it.

I did notice the sword and how ugly it is, but I don't see how Hawke could have recognized it as the idol. Speaking of which, why didn't this piece of the idol make chairs fly and speak to Varric?
