I always thought Hawke recognised it at the end when it started glowing just like the idol. Before that, it was just a sword. A scary-looking sword, perhaps, but she has good reason to look scary. Gotta keep those mages in line, and everything.

But maybe that's only if you touch it.

It's certainly possible, but why would it matter? There are like a gazillion lyrium-imbued weapons and objects in the game. Wouldn't really make it anything beyond a fancy sword. Nothing to link it to the idol.
