This is NOT a DA2 bashing.  This is an honest appraisal from a hardcore RPG fan who's been playing them for over 20 years.

Let me start off by saying Bioware has always been my favorite game maker.  The minute I see the "Bioware" logo on something, I automatically know it's going to be epic.  Bioware is "still" my favorite game maker.  DA2 isn't a bad game, just not what fans of DA:O expected and seems to have been significantly "paired down" to appeal to a larger audience.  Of course when you do that, you tend to alienate fans of the original but it is what it is.  I've ranted and raved in other forum threads on this but now that I've played the game throughout, here are my opinions.  Take them as you will.

Pros:  * I like the new combat.   I find it very stylized and less clunky then DA:O.  However, It's a bit faster then I would like.  DAO was a bit slower paced which I thought gave you more time for planning and strategizing.  Half of the time my companions would execute a skill and it all happens so fast I don't get to see if a) they did it successfully or B) how awesome it probably was.  * I think the graphics are decent and have a bit more flavor now.    * I like some of the storytelling (Whic Bioware is famous for)  There are times in the gameplay where the some of the twists and turns work extremely well.  One had me almost teary eyed.  * I like the fact that the trash loot you collect automatically goes into a trash receptacle for easy selling.

Cons:  * DAO  had a thread that pulled us through the great story.   We had a strong sense of purpose and not one of personal gain but of severe importance.  DA2's story, although it had some interesting moments, did not keep pulling me through.  Most of the time I just thought "meh".  * The leveling up is rudimentary.  Even though some people thought the leveling scheme in DAO had some trash skills and spells, I think a lot of us liked the fact that we had a choice to either use them or not.  * Not being able to create your own character was a let down.  The thing that was the most exciting about the Dragon Age franchise for fans was the fact that you could basically be whoever you wanted to be and the world treated you accordingly.  This is what made it so replayable and fresh each and every time you went through it.  * I didn't feel any real connection to any of my companions.  Their banter doesn't include any of the really sharp wit/caustic humor that there was in DAO.  There are a couple of chuckles but Alistair and Morrigan's wicked snipes at each other in DAO had me in in stiches most of the time not to mention Shale's aversion to pigeons and Oghren's disgusting habits and leering side remarks.  * You can't change your companions clothing.  I love being able to outfit my friends with things that "I" think are good for them or give them weapons that I think they'd be using as part of my party.  With DA2 I feel like everything is on rails and my options have been stripped away to basic functionality.

I don't think this should've been called DA2as it doesn't really live up to it's originator.  Perhaps Dragon Age: Hawke?  Just my two cents.
