My Specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium X64
GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz
4G Mushkin Enhanced DDR2 800
8800GTS 512MB (Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev 2 cooler)
Ultra X-Connect 2 550W PSU
Dell 2407 WFP monitor
I'm using the Realtek onboard sound

***EDIT - please read the ALL the posts because I did a lot of additonal testing

****EDIT 12/27/09 - Solved my problem with a new video card cooler - all lockups have ceased. So in summary I have a 8800GTS that had a Accelero S1 cooler and put on a Zalman VF900-CU2. I also had put in a new Corsair TX750w power supply but the game still locked up until I put the gpu cooler on. So all is good now. Thanks everyone!

MY scenario:
Started the game as a mage, got through all the character creation with no problem. Went into the Harrowing, played a few minutes then the screen would get blocks of red and then go to black. The computer would completely lock up - CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work, ALT-TAB doesn't work - have to do a hard reboot.

After rebooting, playing a few minutes and managing to get through the Harrowing, it took me to the next area (mage tower) where I played with no issues several for hours. I then got to Ostagar and the lockups began again. At this point I gave up.

Things I've tried:
- different versions of Nvidia drivers
- setting my CPU affinity to one core
- installed patch 1.01b
- changed resolutions / disabled AA / played in a window / etc

Same thing happens every time - I play for about 10 minutes and the computer locks up hard. Usually I see red blocks, followed by some audio stuttering then the screen goes black. I have to hit the reset button to reboot the pc, keyboard commands are unresponsive.

The only thing I haven't tried that sounds promising, as far as narrowing down a fix, is disabling the sound. I'll try that tonight.

I just wanted to get my info up as well since when the game plays it plays awesome. It's just very frustrating knowing how good the game is and how others appear to playing with no issues.

Oh, and if there is any other info that can help please let me know!

Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you, Eddie. I originally tried to install it on Win7, except in my case, it wouldn't even launch. So I tried it on my Vista machine and instead of just not running, at least I get the Dragon Age splash screen. LOL!

The red blocks going to a black screen sounds like a heat issue, when was the last tome you hit your fans/heatsinks with some air?

Zacrobmer - good point. I did check my temps and everything is good - just for the heck of it (because I didn't trust the numbers since this is such a new OS) I pulled open the case and literally touched the cpu and gpu - and they're nowhere near hot.

I agree with Zacrobmer, the first thing that came to mind when you described your symptoms is a heat issue.

I am able to run it under Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium with no problems, so I doubt it is an OS specific issue.

Just a moment to slow on the heat comment I guess :) If heat is not the issue and you have upgraded your video drivers, the next thing I would try is to see if there is a BIOS update available for your Mobo.

Also you have to remember, I'll boot the pc, play DA for a few minutes and it'll lock up. It doesn't even have time to get hot. But for the heck of it I'll doublecheck the temps again. BTW I have friends running the same OS and playing just fine too so I agree it's not OS specific. Just happens to be what I'm running.

That would be my second check. Make sure the video drivers are current and you are unstalling the old ones, and using Driver Sweeper (or something similiar) before installing the new ones.

On a side note what brand and wattage of PSU are you using?

EDIT: An overheating Gfx card can go from "normal" temps to overheating in seconds if under load.

I "think" I'm running the latest BIOS because my mobo has been around a while. But I'm at work so I can't verify ATM. I'll check that too.

Can't verify the wattage here at work but it's one of those Ultra (brand) X(?) modular PSU's. Pretty sure it's 600w but again I'm at work atm.

Also my video card has a Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev 2 cooler on it FYI. CPU has a stock cooler on it.

One thing that doesn't make sense to me is why it seems only certain areas have this issue. If I was having video card/heating/driver issues you'd think I wouldn't have been able to play for hours on the one section of the game.

BTW thanks for the helpful tips so far.

You would think so. Just a theory but maybe some spots are not optimized, and cause your Gfx card to go into overdrive.

I am not having any issues with the game and generally hover around 55-60 FPS even during battles. There are some spots though like the front steps of Redcliff castle, where if I face a certain direction I drop to 40 fps, with no character, effects etc in view. My card never gets above 38c due to water cooling though.

Sure that's understandable - I'll check the temps (using GPU-Z) again tonight to make sure. I'll doublecheck the CPU as well.

So here's what I did tonight. I ran DA in a window at 1200 x 800 4x AA high textures. I ran GPU-Z and Coretemp logging to a file (and visually open next to my windowed game so I could monitor it). My temps are all logged as degrees/celsius. Each run I loaded a game save in Ostagar since that's where my lockups occur.

First run:
I unplugged my Logitech USB headphones because I read somewhere else to try this. I played for about 10 minutes and the highest my GPU temp was 56.5C. I did not lock up at this point.

Second run:
Plugged my logitech headphones in and was prompted to reboot windows - did that and started playing. Played about 12 minutes and it locked up. GPU temp was 52.5C. I noticed my CPU fan had spun up quicker this time so...

Third run:
No headphones again and played 17 minutes before it locked up. GPU temp was 56.5C, CPU cores were both maxed at 100% usage and core 1 temp was 37C and second core was 52C.

In all lockup cases even running in a window the computer went to a black screen and completely froze. Only a hard reboot would work. And those temps seem to be reasonable. The CPU usage is suspicous since both cores were maxed. Again, I have previously set the affinity to one core before and that didn't work FYI.

Also, since someone asked previously, my power supply is an Ultra X Connect 2 550W power supply.
I'll try disabling sound next as someone else had mentioned that but I wanted to get those temperature figures posted.

Thanks again!

I have Windows 7 x64 and have only had the game crash once, and that was when loading a save game after starting the game, which was a bit odd because I did the same thing again loaded the game and the save and it didn't crash.

I would check your drivers/temps and do a memtest and perhaps run prime95/orthos/boinc or something to max the cpu out for awhile, perhaps even run 3dmark or something to see if stress testing your gfx card to see any problems.

Then again I am using an ATi card so it might be a nvidia specific problem?!?

Yea DKill it's frustrating but I figure if we supply them with info they can fix it faster. Post up specifics so we can keep this rolling!

I just posted my temps and I don't think they're an issue. I've tried different versions of the NVida drivers as well (mentioned in the original post). I can run a memtest just to make sure nothing is going on there. Certainly won't hurt.

I'd like to also add I checked the event viewer for anything, and other than messages about unexpected shutdowns (doh!) I don't have any errors being logged there.
