K, last post for today - I won't get much testing done tonight - anniversary with the wife is today :), then a wedding to go to tomorrow. This is what I'm going to try (hopefully one at a time in case I find a fix) sometime this weekend - not in the order listed, just as I review notes:

- try the game as vista sp2 compatibility and run as admin

- install beta nvidia drivers

- re-install directx from the redistributable download

- manually install chipset drivers

- disable the UAC

- verify disk space / pagefile stuff

- Check Visual C++ installs and have both 32 and 64 bit

I was ready to just give up for now but there are too many good things to try. If nothing works I'll probably look at getting a decent 750w psu if I get the chance, but can't say for sure yet.

As always I appreciate the help from everyone. Have a great weekend!

For those of you who are working under Windows 7 x64 could you post your power supply info? After I try a few more things if I'm unsuccessful I may get a new one for the heck of it. I'm curious about your psu specs.

Thanks

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 6.01.7600

Platform Compliance : x64

Gigabyte EX58-EXTREME
Intel® Core™ i7 CPU         975  @ 4.12GHz
6GB DDR3 @ 2x 1GHz (2GHz)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
NorthQ Modular PSU 850w

not had any problems what so ever, apart form the toolset deleting the AI..

i'd say your psu is more than capable for your hardware, since youve got the 1.01b patch, i take it youve got the dvd version? im running it on steam so that could be something to look into?

have you tried your save on someone else's machine/version?

I don't know how much use this is to anyone, but I was having all kinds of lockups during specific cutscenes. I finally decided to completely uninstall the toolset and DAO. I reinstalled DAO without the toolset, and I haven't run into any problems again. I'm thinking something got corrupted in my save game file(s) even though I never modified any of the core resources, and I never exported with dependencies. I've now played about twice as far through the game, and haven't run into a single issue. (This is on Win7 64-bit)

I'm at work, but I don't believe I have the toolset installed (unless it installs by default). I've tried brand new games, with new saves, and still have a problem fwiw.

Sorry I haven't had time to revisit this and test things (see my previous post) with Thanksgiving coming up - I'll get back on it once that's over. Have a great holiday everyone.

sunnyhat is right on the mark here. It's your power supply, I'd bet money on it.

You need to invest in a high quality, good name brand power supply that has adequate wattage for the hardware that you're running, and, very importantly, is 80 Plus certified. This rating indicates that the efficiency that the PSU runs at is always going to be 80% or higher at any given wattage draw. Running a non-80 Plus certified power supply is always a crap shoot because you never know when the 12V rail is going to be driven too hard and cause the kind of issues you're seeing.

I'd say do this: look in your phonebook for computer repair shops. Call each of them, asking if they perform free diagnostics and describe the exaclt problem you're seeing. A good shop is going to absolutely understand what's going on and HAPPILY test it for you with a shop power supply (or a brand-new one, if they want to open one up) and confirm the problem by process of elimination. If that's it, just purchase the new power supply from them.

These kinds of problems are easily solved by using normal, yet rigorous, troubleshooting techniques.

Good luck.

BTW, I'm not seeing any 80 Plus symbol anywhere in this PSU's box.

Replace that baby with a good Cooler Master, Thermaltake, OCZ, PC Power & Cooling or similar 80 Plus PSU. Probably 650W would be fine for you.

I have had the same issue you have with nearly the same specs. I tried everything and finally found the issue and solution. The problem is GPU temperature. I got the temperature using the tool downloaded here:

http://www.windows7d...d-pnwydqli.html

It would go over 80 celcius and graphics would start getting flaky and then blackout. I fixed the issue by downloading the performance tool here: (It says its for Vista, but it works for Windows 7 64 bit.)

http://www.nvidia.co...ls_6.03_uk.html

Only install teh performance component. and turn the fan speed up until temperature stays below 65 celcius. (I had to go to 70% on a 285gtx).

GL!!!

SOLVED finally. First of all I did get a new power supply. A Corsair TX750w. But the game still locked up after that. So I decided this must me video card related even though my temps were showing as being low during my tests. I had an Accelero S1 as my cooler and just put on a Zalman VF900-CU2 on it.

It was immediate. My computer no longer seemed to go into that crazy overdrive and I've FINALLY been able to play without any lockups. So the culprit has been video card cooling in my case.

I hope everything that has been previously submitted helps other people, and I want to thank EVERYONE who replied here with their constructive efforts. Off to play this game - wOOt!
