I got the free copy of ME2 and downloaded it. The checkbox for 'Keep game installers after games have been installed' was checked but the installer which was meant to be in

C:\\ProgramData\\Electronic Arts\\EADM\\DownloadCache\\

was nowhere to be found. EADM also never asked me if I wanted to install ME2. Once the game was downloaded, it was already installed and ready to play.

I only have one other game on EADM which is Sims 2. It wasn't installed so I downloaded it and the game installer was in the above mentioned folder. Unlike ME2, I had to actually click 'Install' after the files were downloaded.

I deleted ME2 and am downloading it again. Usually the files would be stored in that DownloadCache folder while the game is downloading but I just checked and it seems as though the game is being downloaded to the actual installation folder (C:\\Program Files), and it is being installed while it's downloading. This would explain why the previous download never gave me the option to install and did it on its own instead.

Is this happening with everyone else?

This is so stupid. Why would they make it so it's not possible to backup the game installer?!

I didn't check the box as I don't have a reason to keep the game installer, is there a reason?

I already had a retail copy and had to delete and reinstall using the online installer to be able to play without a disk.

Okay, so I went back to check and I found the installer!

C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect™ 2\\__Installer\\DISK1

Yeah, my brother has slow internet and since he got the free copy as well I told him I'll just give him the installer.

So your installer was in Program Files? Is that your designated directory? C:\\ProgramData\\Electronic Arts\\EADM\\DownloadCache\\ is the default and is where installers are meant to be.

Once it's downloaded again I'll see if it's the folder you found it in. At the moment though, that folder is 0kb

See this thread about EA's so-called "seamless installation process"... in which it apparently is no longer possible to save the installer. From the description of the OP (installing while it's downloading) it sounds a lot like that is the case here as well...

After reading that thread I worked out an easy way to backup and reinstall. Here are the steps in case anyone else is in the same situation as me..

1) The default directory where ME2 is installed is

32 bit -> C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect™ 2

64 bit -> C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect™ 2

Copy the entire 'Mass Effect™ 2' folder and save it somewhere. This is essentially the backup/installer.

2) ME2 can be uninstalled.

3) To reinstall, first quit EADM. Copy and paste the 'Mass Effect™ 2' folder into the Electronic Arts folder like shown above. Has to be the same directory where EADM is installed so that EADM can detect the files.

4) Run EADM. It should now say 'READY TO INSTALL' under ME2. Install and you're good to go.

hmm this must be for the current free d/l offer as I redeemed a retail collectors edition(digital deluxe equivalent for the d/l copy) and d/led it last month(had the game since last year but d/led it on this 'new' pc(new in that I installed windows 7 on it)), have the installer files for it in the default folder.

jfaman you might want to edit your instructions to mention that the 'program files(x86)' folder is for those with 64bit windows, 32bit windows would be 'program files' folder.
