Have your group hold position by the stairs leading to the Qunari compound and have Ave pull the groups to em.

I'm just saying that fight isn't a breeze, and can understand just about any discomfort with it.. At least until on figures out how to fight the Pride demon.

What I did to finish it was send Isabella off to where the Pride demon spawned and have everybody else take care of the other baddies.
With the right tactics, spec and gear Isabella can kill the demon by herself. By keeping the demon far from the group and focused on her, it can be killed without causing any trouble to the rest of the group.

1. Run away whenever blue circle appears.
2. Ignore the pride demon until everyone is dead.
3. Does Aveline have taunt? Put "defensive shield" (?) on and use taunt so most of the shades follow her. Focus the other 3 party members on taking out one shade at a time.
4. If someone is getting surrounded, or if Merrill is even approached, run away.
5. Use abilties that damage whenever you can. If you can stun, use that whenever you can too.
(These tips are for casual, obviously, in case they attract ire. I was shamelessly, shamelessly casual in this fight. A couple of tries, observe what the enemy is doing and run away when required. You'll get it.)

That sounds like something I'd like to try 2nd time through. What tactics, spec and gear?

Oh, yeah, well after Hybris I had learned to avoid the Blue Ring so I made sure not to get caught in that during the battle at the docks.AshenEndemion wrote...
Hybris is different (I had no trouble with him). But when that thing on the Docks hits you with the crushing prison AOE(Rogue Hawke, Isabella, and Aveline) just as the blood mage dies, you're kind of screwed when the 12 shades that were next to the pride demon come in and slaughter the group.

Oh, and here's a fun fact: Horror works on any creature, even bosses.

That's some woman then, not some guy. Blood mage to be precise and it's easy on casual providing your party has someone can do AOE...Also haste...oh how I love thee hastey haste....

avoid the Blue Ring of Slight Discomfort.
I always throw some points into health and fortitude even for my mages. Having twenty in health keeps mages and rogues alive against Arishok specials, and twenty Fortitude stops most knockbacks and keeps stuns short.

why wouldnt I be serious?
because if you're really not able to pass a fight, at least on the second try, while playing on casual...it shows a level of suck unheard of before.
seriously..casual almost plays itself. I'm playing my 3rd time through on casual and you almost literally don't even need a healer.
again but if you can't pass a fight on casual don't blame the game or bioware for it. Because you are all kinds of terrible at the game.
learn strategy and what health pots do. Throw anders in there if you have him.

The most important part is just not getting caught in the gravity ring... the rest is just a matter of using whatever attacks you have handy.

if youre having full party meltdown trouble at ALL on casual and especially if its repeatedly in teh same fight and you know whats coming i HAVE to assume you have no idea how to assign attribute points and talent builds in a game like this. if tahts the case popping on a message board to ask about a specific fight isnt the solution. you need to find an instructional site that explains important attributes for each class, and effective talent builds. you have to do taht first before you can begin to undertstand what half the suggestions in this thread are really suggesting.
again, i dont think youre stupid because you dont know. im not trying to insult you. but its not the game. even on normal this game kind of plays itself if youre doing your builds correctly. just saying.

Seriously, have Merrill run away? MY first play through on hard Merrill was my back up tank, because she had more HP than anyone else. You spend all her points in magic and con, because she doesn't need willpower. Than you max out her main tree, go into primal and get rock armor and the passive ability that increase rock armor to 125% aromr, and she is nigh unkillable. The more people around her the more she heals as she is using that healing as fuel for more spells.
