Best:

Fallout 1,2,3 - Awesome games! Along with Master of magic, these are games I'll never get rid of.

The Witcher - Enhanced Edition - Fun, fun, fun.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 - I spent so many hours playing these.. I rank these up there with the fallout series.

Final Fantasy IX - This is my favorite FF

Final Fantasy X - (not sure this is technically an rpg...)

Kotor 1 - wonderful game!

NWN - the story was mediocre but still enjoyable.

Most Disappointing:

NWN2 - Ugliest graphics excepting the terrain, small areas, mediocre story, the list goes on and on...

Mass Effect - Not a bad RPG in any sense but the watered down gameplay, and third rate graphics disappointed me.

Temple of Elemental Evil - Love the mechanics but meh on the bugs..

Gothic 1,2,3 - just plain horrible....

Best :

BG 1 and 2

Morrowind with Tribunal and Bloodmoon

Diablo 2

Most disappointing

Oblivion ( I see many consider it disappointing, at least I am not alone)

NWN1 (I am sorry, but after BG, seriously, it wasn't worth it. gets better with expansions).

Icewind Dale 2 (I am sorry to say so, it is a very playable game, very enjoyable, but... I think it's the rules).

Best:

Final Fantasy 6 and 12

.hack//G.U.

Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant

Tales of the Abyss and Vesperia

Lost Odyssey

Persona series

BG1&2

Mass Effect

KotOR

Jade Empire

Most Dissapointing (though still good games for the most part)

Final Fantasy 7 and 8 (in 7 I could stand Cloud, Barret, or Sephiroth. In 8 I didn't like any other characters or the story)

Shadow Hearts: From the New World (can't put my finger on why I disliked it, but I couldn't even bring myself to finish it)

Tales of Legendia (I was expecting it to be like Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss. It wasn't and so I was disapointed)

Icewind Dale (I had just finished BG1&2. I was expecting this to be like them. Can't remember what I thought of the story, but having to create all my party meant that there was no interesting character background or party interaction)

NWN (It had in my opinion the worst Bioware storyline and I have no interest in multiplayer so it wasn't for me)

Jade Empire (no this isn't a mistake. I have it on both lists. I loved it, but was disapointed in it because it seem to me that they cut a lot of what they originally wanted to put in)

Best:
Bloodlines
KotOR 1 and 2
Deus Ex
Witcher Enhanced Edition
NWN2 - MoTB
Fallout 1 and 2
BG2

Disappointing:
Mass Effect - It was a great story driven fps, but as an RPG I hated it. I did love Wrex, though.
NWN - Story... yeah.
Folklore - Don't buy this. Please.
Gothic 2 - Ehh.. no.

Enjoyable games that have no backbone:
Oblivion - It is fun with lots of mods :)
Fallout 3 - Again, fun with mods

Most disappointing: Mistmare.

The game had an interesting setting, but there was a horrible time system implemented. I picked it up from the bargain bin for about 3 guilders (equivalent to about $3), and it still managed to make me feel like it was a waste of money. >_>

11. Pretty sure Diablo III is going to be on this list, because im cynical at this point on my number list

and that's just off the top of my head
<_<

*sigh* and this thread was going so well. :(

Given that Diablo 1 & 2 were never role-playing games I doubt that Diablo 3 could ever be considered one either, given that Blizzard aren't deviating from the style and mechanics of the first two games to that extent.

Would have loved it if this thread could have remained devoid of any mention of the Diablo series.

Best:
Fallout 3 (love the modding community for that game)
Mass Effect (great story!)
KotOR (loved that game!)
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (one of the few rpgs in a modern setting and vampires)
Morrowind (one of first open world / sandbox rpgs I played)
Final Fantasy IX (my favourite Final Fantasy game)
The Witcher Enhanced Edition (enjoyed the story)

Most disapointing:
KotOR 2 (disappointing story compared to KotOR 1)
Oblivion (disliked that clean and plastic-like world)

That's tough to decide, although I'll give it a try.

Best:

Morrowind: Extremely awesome for its time but I've played it so much I simply can't be arsed playing anymore.. Literally played it to death :P

Fallout series: Yes, even 3, because FO is based on exploring a wasteland which it does very well.

VtM: Bloodlines: It has the be the buggiest game in the universe and even the trillions of fan patches doesn't make it close to bug free. However, it had many cool elements and the haunted hotel was actually scary back then.

NWN, once you got online. Really shows what a great toolset and dedicated fans can do to a game :D

Diablo 1: Yes, it was a bit light on the roleplaying part but there were no real classes (everyone could learn everything) and the story and setting was great.

Mass Effect: The story was epic and there were great cinematics and an excellent feel to the game. Unfortunately, it's far fom the best ever because Bioware seemingly forgot to make more than 5 maps for it (moving some boxes around doesn't count!).

BG series: Because GO FOR THE EYES BOO!!!

Most dissapointing:

Oblivion: Shows exactly how to do free-form sandbox wrong. Monsters are based on your level and you can do everything at level 1, thus eliminating levelling, and as a consequence, most of the choices in the game. Nearly every quest was kill/fetch but rarely sent you out to truly explore something, as most caves and ruins were linear. Still quite fun using the console and fan made stuff. Just dissapointing, since it was basically set in a medieval European forest. Morrowind is the polar opposite of this, even though it also had some issues.

I see a lot of disappointment in Mass Effect, could someone explain why they were dissapointed? I personally adored the game. That said...

Personally, I found mass effect disappointing because it had an excellent story, but it was revealed in a wierd way that could have been done a lot better. It was a very short game, and I thought it was way too easy. You didn't need tactics, just cover, even on the unlockably hard difficulties. If you do absolutely everything, all the side quests, exploring all the planets, everything, it takes what? 40 to 50 hours? On top of all that, the skills, abilities, items, and general gameplay were kinda lackluster. Granted, it wasn't a bad game, I thought it was good, actually, just expected more. It was disappointing because it could have been a lot better if they made a few minor changes, like enemy ai.
