Best (subjective of course):

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (Which seems to be the universal favorite here)

Knights of the Old Republic

The early Northland Triology games (Blade of Destiny and Star Trail)

Gothic

Gothic II, Witcher, ME, M&B and KOTOR 2 are kind of on the brink to best, but not quite personal favorites.

As is Diablo2: Great game for what it was trying to do. And yes, a cRPG in the usual sense - but see the "What is and isn't a RPG"-thread for discussion on that.

Most Disappointing: (not necessarily worst)

Gothic III

Fable

Sacred

Best:

BG trilogy

KoTOR 2

MoTB

FF7

FF10

Legend of Dragoon (glad this was mentioned or else I would have forgotten to mention it)

Suikoden 2

Disappointing:

ME

Morrowind

Fable

The Witcher

Most enjoyable:

BG series - these got me into gaming in the first place :)

Morrowind - I only miss the party banter, otherwise absolutely wonderful!!

NWN2 - loved the delicious characters, liked influence system & plot twists

Divine Divinity - cute, little gem that had quite a bit of humor

Most disappointing:

Oblivion - it was so bland, soulless and disappointing after Morrowind

NWN - who thinks that whole chapter with ambient sounds of agonized cries is a good start for a game?!?

Witcher - as a game OK enough as RPGs go, but the system requirements were demented

Best:

BG2 + expansion

Ultima VII & Ultima V

The Eye Of the Beholder 2 (and Dungeon Master!)

Ultima Underworld

Xenogears

Final Fantasy XII (if only for the great battle mechanics)

Final fantasy IV

Vampire: Bloodlines

Worst disappointments:

Ultima IX. Richard. Why? Forget the MMORPGS already. Buy the Ultima franchise back, and make us A REAL NEW ULTIMA.

Lionheart. They really screwed it up.

Morrowind. Why ANYONE likes this game is beyond my comprehension. The story is bad, all characters are like mannequins without any soul, and even the whole world is completely static.

The best for me has to be Fallout 1 & 2. As for the disappointment I am going to have to say Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Not because the game is bad, it had and still has a huge potential. But it was such a mess upon release that it was almost unplayable and there is really no excuse for the "story missions" that all turn into the Vampire variety of dungeon crawling.

Best(in no particularly order):

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

Baldur's Gate series, especially Throne of Bhaal.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2

The Witcher

Fallout 1 and 2

Jade Empire

Had a lot of fun with but they weren't the best RPGs:

Fable 1 and 2

Neverwinter Nights (MP client)

Disappointed with:

Mass Effect (I love the game, but the companions annoyed me, the game was rather shallow)

Morrowind & Oblivion: Bor. Ing.

Fallout 3: Liam Neeson's voice was the only good part of it for me.

Neverwinter Nights 2 OC: Had a lot of potential with the story and romances but it was half-finished, I think NwN2 was the most saddening of all. Oh, Casavir, you could have been so great.

Best RPG:

Planescape: Torment. I completely agree that this game needs its own spot above all else.

Great RPGs:

The Witcher

BG I/II

Mass Effect

Daggerfall\\Morrowind

KotoR I/II

Fallout 1/2/3

Divine Divinity

Disappointing:

Oblivion

Gothic 3 (First two were good)

Bad:

Two Worlds

Sacred (the first, I refuse to play the 2nd)

Fondest Remembered RPGs:

FFIV + VI
Chrono Trigger (Favorite)
Super Mario RPG (Close 3rd)
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy Tactics (2nd Fav)
Ogre Battle
KotOR

Let Downs:

Secret of Evermore (Wow.. after SoM.. this was so simplified and cheap, I thought)

Chrono Cross (It was a good game... but I was too wanting Chrono Trigger, so I was disappointed. Had I been less biased, it probably would have been more fufilling for me)

KotOR II - (Not a bad game at all. For some reason, I think after I enjoyed the story-line of KotOR so much... this one just disappointed. Again, not a bad game at all... just left a taste of disappointment with me)

ME (Alright game, but the parts that I thought were poor made it painful. Anything with Mako and the side-quests weren't too interesting and mainly the set design of said side-quests never seemed to vary. Just another box room where I shot things easily. I think I just like my "optional quests" to interest me more.)

Well, I hesitate to call a lot of them RPGs, but the RPGs I remember enjoying the most were:

Baldur's Gate series - Nothing has ever come close, I'm afraid.

NWN2 (and expansions) - A lot of people really dislike the OC, but I thought it was pretty fun. I even managed to get into Storm of Zehir!

Icewind Dale series - Both games were fun, if a little empty.

Tales of Symphonia - Bearing in mind I was about 13, I really got into the story.

Persona 4 - Loved this game. Seriously. I was surprised by how much fun I had.

Final Fantasy X - I fell in love with Rikku, and that pretty much carried me through the entire game.

Jade Empire - A fun game, though I haven't played it since.

---

Some of my worst RPGs include:

ToEE - Really wasn't fun. Never got very far.

Dungeon Siege - Not an RPG, but I remember it being advertised as such.

Pool of Radiance - Boring as sin. No thanks.

NWN - Never got into it, and I only play single player, so I never experienced the MP.

Morrowind and Oblivion - I installed, I played for an hour, I uninstalled. Utterly, utterly boring. Not my cup of tea, at all. Yuck.

Best:

-BG1&2

-Xenogears

-Chrono Trigger (can't believe I haven't seen that in this thread)

-Phantasy Star IV

-FF VII

-FF XII

-Persona 4

-Fallout 3

-Star Wars KOTOR

-Mass Effect (I think ME sets a new standard in digital acting, storytelling and atmosphere, even though the uncharted worlds kinda sucked. Also when it came out for 360 in '07 the graphics were really good.)

-Jade Empire (even though I felt the 2nd half of the game was rushed)

Most disappointing:

-Fable 1 & 2 (IMO both games are ok, but not rpg's especially since you can't have a single dialogue, cause the PC can only interact through expressions. Faceplant for the immersion)

-Eternal Sonata (can a story get any more convoluted? It took me 20-something hours and still I was feeling "damn can i get to the end soon" for the last 10 hours...)

-Xenosaga (since I loved Xenogears)

-LOTR The third age (goddamnit, this game was horrible!!! I will have to make a topic about it!)

Worst:

-Granstream Saga (PS1, a horrible excuse for a game)

-LOTR The third age

OMG, I'd forgotten about that game. It was awful. I never ended up finishing it, but what I did play was absolutely shocking. It summed up why a person might dislike JRPGs, for me.

Best:

Might and magic V, VI and VII. Can't remember much about them except that i really enjoyed them.

Ultima IX. Same with this one - although it had many gamebreaking bugs.

BG2:SoA Great party banter, story, character building. Combat was okay but pretty flawed and too easy. Buff up with immunities and zzz.

Vampire the masquerade, first one was great, second even better - though a bit too buggy. Haunted hotel is a classic. Great attention to detail.

NWN. campaigns were okay - but all the great multiplayer that came out of it was amazing. Bastions of War is still the best pvp experience I've had.

Kotor. Pretty good, but the combat was just BAD. Find target - flurry flurry flurry next.

Dark messiah. Not much of an RPG, but I really enjoyed the combat in it.

Dissappointing:

Oblivion. YAWN. Who wants to play an MMO alone? Wheres the story and characters?

Fallout 3. It wasn't bad. Much better than oblivion - they actually attempted a bit of story/plot. But it still took me half a year off and on playing to finish. Main quest was just too boring.

Mass effect. Shooter with bioware elements - okay, cool. Except the main story and REAL sidequests took like 10 hours. Way too short. And uncharted worlds... who wants to explore randomly generated terrain with the same dungeon/building?

Might and magic IX or whatever the last one was called. I miss you V VI VII :(

Best rpgs I have ever played?

KOTOR: It tops them all, this is only because the game got me into videos games. My brother tried to get me into them, but... yeah. The game has a bit outdated graphics yes, but the effort Bioware put into the characters, how all the dialog was voiced, and I didn't have remain totally mute through the whole game. I could actually say something. The dialog system the game introduced me to was excellent, it got me obessessed with Star Wars, a whole bundle of other things. The story was excellent, I just loved the game. It's a classic.
KOTOR 2: No the best game ever... but... It had it's charm, of course number one was better. This game could have been so much more than it was, it was too rushed... if they took their time on it, it could have been such a excellent game. Still besides my complaints, it was still a very good game to play, though it felt like I was playing a KOTOR expansion. I loved some of the characters. The concept was interesting.
Fable: I love the hack and slash, the artistic graphics, I did enjoy it, the moral system was a bit black and white but highly enjoyable. I liked watching my character become fatter or skinner or more uglier depending on my actions or what I made him do. I enjoyed the combat system. Not the best of course.
Marrowind: The game was a bit too open-ended for me but the interactive quests, the creative puzzles, the long never ending quests... they keep coming up with different and amusing things to do. I also very much liked the story. Sometimes it was a bit perverted, but I enjoyed it. Like the time this dude who before tried to kill me 'I am going to have fun playing with your body when your dead.' 0_0 The dailog was not voiced which was disappointing because KOTOR was, but the game is still one of my favorites. I don't think it's a universal classic though.

Most disappointing of all:

The Third Age: It sucked, what little I played of Final Fantasy was way better than that crock of shi**. They could have done so much better. I really liked the movie series the Lord of the Rings, which is apparently a book series. This game hardly does it any justice. The relationships between the characters suck, it's confusing, lacks depth and... I am complaing.
Bioware could have done a better job, or whomever made that LOTR mmo.
That's all I can think, there have probably been others.

Ones I was fond of... not obessessed with though:

Final Fantasy ten

Baldurs Gate 2 (te best tactical RPG ever)

Fable 2 (oh god the story sucked, the gamelay sucked and almost everything else did, just bad)
Daggerfall (ah bugerfall, I never finshed it because the bugs made it imposeable too.

The Good:

The BGs
PS:T
The Final Fantasy's (Loved em all... yeah 8 and 10 were my favs.  Bite me!  LOL  I REALLY felt horrible for Yuna... I saw it coming from the beginning and the whole game was a like a bullet train speeding towards a wreck you know is coming.  I literally prayed on my knees before going to bed that there was a way to save Yuna.  And yeah, I saved her... just for them to release X-2... Image IPB)
Betrayal at Krondor
The Gold Box games
Fallouts (Especially 3. Loved the originals, different but good. I think it could revolutionize the shooter genre)
Daggerfall
Deus Ex's
VtM:Bloodlines (Every vamp cliche shrinkwrapped in a single box! Luckily, I like vamp cliches. LOL)
A Dance with Rogues (NWN Mod)
KOTOR2 (The new TSLRCM beta mod is AMAZING. But, even with giant plot parts missing it seemed lightyears past KOTOR)
All the Ultimas before EA
Arcanum
The Quest for Glories (since it was the most RPGish. Everything Sierra put out is worthwhile of installing DosBox nowadays and could fall into the realm of "RPG" Ever wanted to roleplay a loser trying to get laid or a space janitor? Here's your chance!)
The Gothics (Stylisticly, very revolutionary. I found the keyboard system very immersive once I figured it out)
Dark Forces/Jedi Knight (Does this count?)
The Wing Commanders (Look, I'm RPing a fighter pilot. I had conversation choices later in the series. Leave me alone - I was TOTALLY immersed. LOL)

The Bad:

FF:X2 (Loved X - totally epic.  I saved Yuna, for THIS?  **** you Square Enix!  Don't EVER make a direct sequel again.)
Icewind Dales (Seriously? The same people that made PS:T took out all the goodness and left us with ONLY combat in the Infinity Engine? And then they MADE A SEQUEL with LESS story?!  The spell effects are worth modding into BG2 - that's about it)
Menzoberranzan (Didn't care for EotB much to begin with; the first RPG that advertised itself as a previous RPG with better graphics)
The other Vampire game (Me Brujah. Me smash.)
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Return to Krondor (WTF?)
ToEE (I could deal with bugs if there was a plot)
PoolRad:R2MD (Ditto. How dare they feed upon my nostalgia and give me THIS?)
Lionheart (The first half of the game was AWESOME! The second half... wasn't. What a sad end for Black Isle. Luckily, no one played it.)

The Ugly:

Morrowind and Oblivion (Daggerfall was AWESOME! For 1996. Stop reskinning the same game and make a new ****ing game!)

Ultima8&9
Fallout3  (not a bad game, but very disappointing compared to Fallout1-2)

lionheart

Ultima 9 is probably the biggest let down for me, and I have the fondest memories playing Ultima 5 on my commodore 64.

A Dance with Rogues (NWN Mod)

That is one of the best module ever built and has the best use of the rogue skills in any module or OC/game. A lot of people look down on it because of it's adult nature, but if your over 18 and enjoy using rogues you should play it.

Probably not classified as an RPG, doesn't mean it's not one of the best game series ever made.

Back on topic.

Good:

VTM:Bloodlines
KoTOR
Fallout 1&2
Mass Effect
NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer
Jade Empire
Gothic 2
NWN: HotU

Bad:

Oblivion
Gothic 3
Witcher
Drakensang

Unsure on whether they classify:
Dues Ex

See? I put Wing Commander in there because most of the series predates the rigid defining of the modern CRPG. And as a space flight sim, it's actually pretty lousy. If you're looking for a space flight sim, the XWings or Descent blow it away. WC shines because of the universe and the characters. I was massively in love with Angel when I was like 13. Not to mention that the story is completely different if you screw the pooch on the missions - giving you the "affect the world around you" effect of an RPG, you know? I was always more excited to hang out in the bar than I was to play the missions. I felt like I was role-playing a fighter pilot who had to go run off to work every now and then to get a break in the story. Compare this to a fantasy RPG where you're doing quests/dungeon crawls for the story quest-giver. LOL

It stands the test of time, too. I just recently played thru the entire series in DosBox. I even went out and bought a joystick! LOL

Valine just released a major update for part 1 of ADwR a couple weeks ago.  It totally revamps the story for part 1 and is awesome.  And for people that might be detracted because of the sex, other than the opening scene, the player can actually avoid any sex for the rest of the series.  Anyone who skips this series because of the sex is REALLY missing out on something incredible.

As per Deus Ex, DE2 definitely qualifies (especially if shooter hybrids like FO3 qualify).  Ergo, DE gets grandfathered in if I get WC.  Image IPB

Best: No paticular Order:
Deus Ex: An incredible hyprid FPS/RPG, and easily one of the best of both.

Might and Magic VII: An immense classic of cRPG history with an immersive, dynamic, and expansive world to play in. This is one of those games that just stands out and stands the test of time to the power of innovation that RPG's are capable of. This is my favorite RPG.

Jade Empire
: Not only an gripping and origional RPG, but it's also a solid action game showing an amazing mixture of gernes.

Mass Effect: Epic Sci-Fi Action/RPG with one of the most compelling stories I've ever seen.

Knights of the Old Republic
: This is the best starwars thing made during my lifetime, not to mention it's a very fun RPG.

Vandal Hearts: A tactical RPG for the PS1. It actually had a very engaging story and very good gameplay. I was plesantly suprised.

Vampires: The Masquarade: Dispite the technical issues at launch, this is one hell of an awesome RPG.

Most Disappointing:

Might and Magic IX: The most dissapointing game of all time. Although personally Might and Magic VIII was a bit short of VII, IX held a great deal of promise. The series was moving to full 3d, a new world to carve out a place in, and a revamped Might and Magic mythology, if only 3DO hadn't gone bankrupt! It was so dissapointing.

Knights of the Old Republic II: It was looking like such a great follow up, if only it had been finished!

Rogue Galaxy: A fun little JRPG, but it sputters out so terribly near the end with the most tedious grind I've ever encountered in any game. It's disappointing because it's so good, then it becomes so terrible that I don't know anyone who's actually beaten it, and it's not due ot difficulty, but rather bordem.

Best:
Wizardry 8, this game was the perfect RPG in every way. Story, Combat, Graphic, Sound... too bad there will never be a wizardry 9

Bad that had very great potential with some changes:
Oblivion, Melee Combat was unbearable.
Drakensang, your friends dont even use abilities without your interaction! I like the pause and play for challening fight but it is very annoying for easy fights.
Mass effect, New game +, after two games i know the story I would have liked more combat because it was more fun to improve my character.
Fallout 3, wayyy to easy.. had to download a mod  that greatly increased number of enemies.
