A Dance with Rogues (NWN Mod)

That is one of the best module ever built and has the best use of the rogue skills in any module or OC/game. A lot of people look down on it because of it's adult nature, but if your over 18 and enjoy using rogues you should play it.

I really liked A Dance with Rogues.  There were a lot of really great NWN modules back then.  So many that I loved, much more so than the official campaign.  I can't wait to see that creativity from the community applied to the awesome new Dragon Age toolset!

(I'm even gonna try doing some modding myself, this time around.)

Opinions of a casual RPG player who prefers fantasy genre to sci--fi genre.

Best:

- Final Fantasy VII (amazing story)

- Final Fantasy VIII (amazing story and amazing graphics)

- Oblivion (huge game with so much to do)

- Lords of Chaos (very old now and very simple, but it was fantastic!)

- Final Fantasy X (because of all the voices and characters that made the world feel so alive)

Most disappointing:

- Final Fantasy III (after three FFs, I got really sick of random encounters and grinding)

- Eye of the Beholder (because it crashed while I was enjoying it)

- Fallout 3 (a bit boring - but maybe because it feels too similar to Oblivion? I'm sure it is a great game though)

- The Hobbit (could not do anything - although this was text-based adventure not an RPG really)

Best:

Vampire: Bloodlines

Dragon Warrior Series

KOTR 1 and 2

BG 1 and 2

Most disappointing:

Oblivion

Fallout 3

I've played Bloodlines a million times. It really was an incredible game. I wish they would have released more clans or mission packs or made a sequel of some kind.

Favorites...

Planescape - Torment
Baldur's Gate 2 + ToB
Neverwinter Nights
Jade Empire
Arcanum
VtM: Bloodlines
NWN2 - MotB
KotOR
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Valkyrie Profile

Not so favorite...

Rather than write another list I will focus exclusively on Temple of Elemental Evil: the most disappointing RPG I had the displeasure of playing since Vay on the Sega CD. This game was colossal waste of money. I bought it on release expecting the most true to PnP D&D conversion yet. At first, it seemed like it hit the mark. Great, detailed isometric graphics with spiffy animation. Mood setting, if not spectacular music. Lots of feats, spells, and varied combat options in a rare turn based set-up. Story vignettes to personalize every party's motivations somewhat.

Then I got into it and found a lot of muck underneath. Half the feats and spells were extremely buggy. Dialogue with recruited NPCs and characters around Hommlet was paper thin in depth. The included "romances" were even more awful. Not that I was expecting romances going in, but if you are going to write marriage track for NPCs I expect more than a few lines of dialogue before the character is smitten.

Worst of all, it was just... boring. The game was too easy once you got the hang of it, and with the story and interaction being so minimal, there was barely incentive to soldier on through. I had to force myself to complete it, and did so only once to feel justified in my purchasing it. Awful, awful game. I heard it's been heavily modded since, but I'm not willing to waste more time on that game on the hopes a mod may make it palatable. Besides, just because you spread sugar over trash, doesn't mean the trash suddenly becomes tasty.

The best for me would be... The Witcher, Mass Effect, Morrowind and FFVII - I can't deny I absolutely loved FFVII!

Most disappointing... every FF after VIII. Gothic3.

I agree with "The Witcher" but i also think Gothic 1 and 2 were briliant

Morrowind was good.
BG was great.
Oblivion  was ok

I can't wait for www.youtube.com/watch

The best were for me...

Mass Effect ( Mostly I adore it for its design, loved the concepts of aliens, the graphics -> Pure eyecandy)

Baldurs Gate 2

NwN2 - Mask of the Betrayer

The Witcher (except some few drawbacks)

Most disappointing:

TES: Oblivion (fun... but not really innovative)

Drakensang (Just boring... bright and boring, in my personal opinion)

NwN2 - Mask of the Betrayer (Yes... I love it and I hate it :/ For all the awesome characterideas, the innovative story, the feeling while playing, the superb voiceactors. and I hate it for all the rushed ideas, underdeveloped characters and overlooked opportunities .. *sighs*)

Fable .... MOST disappointing game I've played ...

totally the worst game D&D ever put out...decent to undermountain. that game was painfully bad.

Holy smokes! Nice reference! I had forgotten about that one. But you are right what a terrible game.

The Best:
  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
  • Morrowind (what a great game world!)
  • Mass Effect
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Neverwinter Nights 2/Mask of the Betrayer (MotB, holy smokes what a great expansion)
  • Chrono Cross (long game; didn’t replay it but it kept me up for days!)
  • Icewind Dale 2 (great story; great D&D combat and encounters)
  • Realms of Arkania: Star Trail (man I loved this game!; diseases, coats and worn boots ftw; saw someone else listed this one and you are automatically awesome because of it)
  • Betrayal at Krondor (the game that started it all for me)
  • Fallout 1
  • Daggerfall (yeah it was buggy as hell but it was awesome after about the 12th patch lol; carrying loot in your horse and cart, having a boat; awesome)
  • Stone Prophet (anyone remember this?!; man I played this game til my eyes fell out)
  • Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (regardless of what boards you are posting on can this game ever be left out of a best game list?)
  • Jade Empire (I thought this might be a cool game just because BW made it so I bought it; I was totally engrossed in it from the start, didn’t expect that at all; played it twice)

Most Disappointing:

  • Neverwinter Nights (I thought this game would never end and found it ending up being a chore to play)
  • Betrayal at Antara (sequel to Betrayal at Krondor; phew what a buggy let down)
  • Wizardry 8 (an ok game but it was another game I thought good lord is this game ever going to end!; so I had to quit playing just got exhausted; putting it in the disappointment category because I thought it would be engrossing based on the pre-release info instead I found it to be a chore)
  • Temple of Elemental Evil (really looked forward to this game and wanted to like it but phew to buggy for me)
  • Arcanum (I know that is blasphemy to some but this game just didn’t seem all there to me; wanted to like it but just couldn’t)
  • Fallout 3 (it pains me to put this on the list; I played it and liked it but it just wasn’t engrossing, had a terrible story and a very, very repetitive combat system; VATs was cool but got old real quick for me; lastly, toward the end if I had to fight another super-mutant I thought I was going to be ill; was there a lack of ideas for enemies?)

best:

morrowind (- spent two years completly obsessed with that game

kotor 1+2 -I thought the sequal was better but that my opinion

sacred 2

tales of symphonia- just a good game wish I could kill loyd though :D

disappointing

oblivion- buggy repetitive, lacked the soul that morrowwind had and was what kept me from getting fallout :/

mass effect- I liked it,but just not my type

fable 2- good game but too short

and that's it I rarely buy a RPG game that I dislike and I have a very good feeling that DAO will be a game that I will enjoy, also I am not a cynic so that helps :)

Best:

KOTOR 2

Ultima 5-7 Part 2

Ultima Underworld

Morrowind

NWN2 + MotB

System Shock 2

Most disappointing:

Ultima 9 (The worst butchering of a series I've ever experienced.)

Oblivion

NWN

Fallout 3

Ultima IX was by far the most disappointing game ever, for me, since I had loved the series for awhile. Ultima 6 was actually my introduction to RPGs. As for the person that mentioned Wing Commander, I loved the series, at least the first four dealing with Blair. The last one I never played, didn't look interesting. Privateer was another favorite too.

reading everyone's posts about how bad oblivion, morrowind and fallout were, makes me mad. these were two awsome games and it takes time to really appreciate the game if you read the books ect and the story properly. There are a lot of bethesda softworks haters in these forums i have concluded.

Some of the best rpg's ever made are Baldurs gate series, Arcanum Steamworks of magic obscuria, The witcher, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Icewind Dale, Diablo Series, Titan Quest. and fallout series.

Some of the not so good rpg's Neverwinter Nights 1 standalone, the expansions were excellent however

nwn2 + expansions including mask of the betrayer which is the worst expansion i have ever baught. It made my blood boil that people could think of scripts so bloody stupid.

Dungeons and dragons Dragonshard, it was like someone took a page from warcraft 3 and fused it with temple of elemental evil. terrible

Temple of elemental evil- this game is ok actually, it was really bad and highly buggy but with a few pathes i recon this isnt such a bad game compared to neverwinter nights.

Temple of elemental evil

when I think of 'best' I think of the games that had me unable to stop playing because the story had totally gripped me

1. bgII (this game just blew me away, I loved the original but the epic tale told here was soooo good)

2. the witcher (I love the setting, and the story.. a beautiful looking game and a great story)

3. planescape: torment (it was so bizarre I just had to know what was gonna happen next)

4. kotor (as a jaded star wars fan this really blew new life into the old universe for me.. loved it)

5. fallout 2 (the setting was so well set up after the first game, there was nothing else like this at it's time)

the most disappointing rpg's... hmm well, some games i've waited for have totally failed to deliver.. like:

1. oblivion (looked nice, bored me stiff)

2. fallout 3 (see the above)

Best:

Chrono Trigger
Baldur's gate 2
KotOR
Chrono Cross
Breath of fire I & II
Fallout I & III
Legend of Zelda link to the past
Legend of Zelda Minish Cap
Legend of Mana I & II
Final Fantasy XII
Lunar 2 : eternal blue
Front Mission series

Worst:

Septerra core : it was so darn bugged it was actualy umplayable!!

Elder scrolls:oblivion: I expended most of my time walking around talking to ppl and solving problems of non-violent nature...it sicked me...

KotOR II: it was made by somebody who wished to be Bioware, the rest is history.

Front Mission series: if it had featured world exploration and sidequest-like system like... well every other RPG in the market, FM would have been perfect. but no! some idiot decided to make an RPG with  linear levels and missions.

Best:

NWN1+ expansions. It opened a new game world for me I was oblivious about before. I don't remember the OC anymore and I haven't played BG before and came with high expectations, but I remember I couldn't stop playing. Add all the years of multiplayer and fantastic community mods, and I have to put it on position one.

The Witcher. What a relief after the huge disappointment of NWN2. Excellent game, absolutely wonderful artwork, a class of it's own. I don't get why people look down on it just because Geralt can bed some girls... there's so much more in this game.

NWN2: MotB. Even though I never finished it, this expansion gave a glimpse of how good the OC could've been if it hadn't been a buggy, rushed out kindergarden game. Wonderful music.

Mass Effect: I'm so torn about this game... part of it makes it one of he best games ever, parts of it makes it horrible. I cringed about the storyline, the exploration quests were horrible, but the presentation of the main story made up for it andmade me want to replay it immediately.

KotoR: Never finished it, I don't know why, but seen enough to call it great.

Worst:

NWN2 OC. Horrible. Well, fine, there were some fun parts, but it was buggy, it looked bad, and the storyline didn't surprise me a lot. The companions were stereotypical and boring... hated it. Sorry Obsidian, I know you worked hard on fixing it, but the first impression drove many away too soon. After XP2 though I can finally truly enjoy it as a multiplayer game and for building.

Dungeon Siege.

Played that after finishing NWN just to have something to play, and it couldn't compete.

I play mostly strategic games like SIV, but RPG is fun to.

My last fun was Mass Effect I.

Oblivion was a disappointment although the character creator was the best I have used ;)

I was about to write the exact same thing when I saw your post.

My guess is that while some people enjoy the freedom of the sandbox model, others want a more straight forward approach to storytelling. I'm a bit in between both worlds, as I like RPGs like BG, KOTOR and Mass Effect, as much as the open/sandbox  Fallout 3 / Oblivion. Also, those games (esp. TES4) have a HUGE modding community, with tons of added content of every kind possible (quests, armor, weapons, bug fixes, etc)

That being said, people saying Fallout 3's main story is hollow and empty haven't been paying attention. The *story* is about much more than just the main quest, it's mainly about war and it's consequences. It's one of the few RPG that moved me to tears..

I could say nice things about Oblivion too, but for me the game became like a book on my bed table... I read a few pages, then go to sleep.
Oblivion is still on my hard drive, never finished.  I started a new game while I waited on Dragon Age.

Oh God, people are going to hate me because of my choices, I just know it.

Best?

Baldurs Gate 2 - I never could get into 1, but this is the RPG that got me into this whole series, the cast was amazing, the story was well written, the gameplay was tactical, and made you think, and everything new was just so shiny and exciting.

Fallout 1-2 - The amount of choice they really gave you was amazing, the story meshed well, and it drew you in, the first game wasn't much, but this was a long time ago, and for its time, it was great.

Planescape : Torment - If I need to say more, you obviously are not a RPG player.

Oblivion/Fallout 3 - Basically love them for the same reason, HUGE open worlds, tons to explore, plenty of mod capabilities, your character never really ends in these worlds, and they feel rich, and full of life, you really feel like a citizen of Cyrodil or DC when you play these games, although the endings of both games left me slightly disappointed, but such is open ended RPGs I suppose.

Vampires the Masquerade : Bloodlines - Normally I hate Vampire games, this one proved to be one of the best RPGs I have ever played however, characters I remember even now, interesting story, interesting gameplay mechanics, it was a great game, even with all its bugs.

KotOR 1/2 - I hate Star Wars, with a passion, so the fact I enjoy these games so much is somewhat of a surprise, I just like the characters in both of them, how the games play, the way the story unfolds, and how the characters interact, it was one of my first Bioware games after the long passing since BG2.

Jade Empire - Gameplay kinda sucked tbh, and there was way to many confusing features in it, but it was all made up for in the storyline, a friend told me not to do any background research into the game before I played, so I went in with no idea what would happen, and the surprises that game throws at you have yet to be equaled.

NwN 2 - Crossroads Keep, really, I don't need to say more but I will. The actual game itself wasn't that great, it was basically NwN p2, and I never really liked the first, due to the lack of a real overarching storyline, however it made up for this, and got on my list of greats due to Crossroads Keep, it added so much to the immersiveness, made me really feel like it was my keep, and my responsibility, and it was nice to see my actions change things, even minor stuff, and for a ton of cash. I'd LOVE to see something like this added to a Bioware game, as I expect they could do SO much with the idea.

Worst

The Witcher - It started out good, and the background story was well written, but playing the game felt like more of a chore then an actual game, I had to learn all these silly little things, just so I could so something, I had to put in hours of working farming for something, just so I could be effective, fighting felt out of place, it was just a mess gameplaywise, which is a shame, because after reading the various wikis as to how the story went, it had a TON of potential.

Mass Effect - No offense Bioware, but this first game was to me not that exciting, the "epic" storyline I remember less of then the story of Doom 3, compared to other Bioware games, the characters were forgettable, and the gameplay was mediocre at best, add into this the bad inventory management, itemization, and silly secondary quest stuff rather then actual interesting, well built quests, and I tag this under a game that could have been great.

NwN - I had a friend who would constantly tell me about how great this game was, and how I, our little groups RPG lover would love it forever and ever, so I went and got it, and was fairly unimpressed, the combat was decent, the story line was decent, but the heart of the game was more about level gaining, and item finding then the actual storyline, and it just made the game feel kinda flat.

default your list is almost the same except my 2nd favorite rpg of all time is the witcher lol, baldurs gate 2 is 1st. I even have the english copies of the witcher books i loved them that much. The humor and style of the witcher was orgasmic, especially about how the butcher spreads rumors that you are as likley to whip out your sword as your likleley to whip out your *ahem*
