Chrono Trigger (SNES & DS got both) IMO Square's best game ever, storyline is perfect, soundtrack perfect as well, a timeless classic that is living proof that you don't need DirectX 11 or XB360/PS3 graphics to make the RPG of RPG's
Super Mario RPG (SNES) - C'Mon how can Squaresoft & Nintendo hooking up for a game be anything less than epic, and the game was for it's time, I still got my copy, game never gets old!! (I had the Forest Maze song stuck in my head for a month after I beat it the first time lol)
Kotor (PC cause the xbox version doesn't even compare)
Grandia II (Dreamcast & PC, own both) Epic storyline, funny charachters and voice acting, and a A+ soundtrack
Oblivion + Shivering Isles and all DL content (PC) Oblivion by itself, not so much...
Golden Sun (GBA, yes I do mean and own both halves of the story lol)
Dissapointing for me:
Final Fantasy 11 (the RPG experts getting pwned by Blizzard is beyond me)
NWN2 The camera views killed it for me, if they had camera system like in Oblivion, Kotor, or Wow it woul have been a great game...
Every Final Fantasy since VII (with the exeption of Crisis Core)
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE OLD REPUBLIC, GO BIOWARE!!!

Best
Wasteland - believe me, this game is just as playable now as it was 23 years ago.
PS:T - a gift from my wife, this game did SO much right
Ultima 7 + SI - this had it all, so many tiny and huge things to the story, subquests, and food for thought. Kind of reflects a lot more of RG than his other games.
NWN - I remember watching the demo on scripting for this with about 100 others and everyone silent. It seemed too good to be true. The online community was amazing, I think I bought about 6 copies of this game when they produced a gold edition.
Morrowind - I felt I was part of something larger when I was playing the game. It did drag, I did get lost and out of sync with the main story, and screwed up some guild standings but all that served to immerse me more. I like more of the exploring element than fighting all the time.
MM: World of Xeen - Look, this game is charming, fun, goofy, and huge. Lots of gold, items, gems, and levels.
Legacy of the Ancients - may have been a little bit narrow on the story, but it was a lot of fun things combined into a good story. The quests, side games, acadamies, and it all brought together with a central museum was pretty new.
Betrayal at Krondor - Wow! I really liked the characters and exploring this one. A real sense of danger and urgency in this one.
BG1 (&BG2) - Right now I'm playing a mod that combines all official BG Games and add-ons into one gigantic game that you can play from start to finish. It is amazing how many small details they fit into this game and how much I like the characters, as well as the 2nd edition rules.
Fallout 1 - 3 - That's right, I love them all! The second was a little too huge (if that is possible), and FO3 made some changes that I didn't necessarily agree with (a perk a level?!), but how many can forget their first trip to minefield?
Gothic 3 - why did I get addicted to this?!
Arcanum - Sorry, but I liked the story, liked the combination of tech and magic, but it kind of left me depressed.
MM6-8 - They had me at female lich. There was a lot to like in these, and they are still very playable.
OK, I need to cut this short: There are a lot more that I really like, but are difficult to go back and play (PoR, BT1-3, DM, LoL, EoB 1-2, UW1&2)
Worst (well, those I like less, certainly not worst)
Uh, well, once you got over the glitches, I really liked Descent to Undermountain. The story was well done, and I liked the solo aspect action rpg thing they had going. Also, the dungeons were nicely laid out. Just quite buggy, but I've played worst.
Lionheart, well, if this was finished, it could have been awsome...
Ultima 8 - played it to the end before the jumping patch. Wow, I almost clawed my eyes out in the Air Titan area, but it had a lot to explore. However, just walking along, falling through the ground and dying was a little insane.
Wizardry 7 - Ok, now, I do not hate the game, but the staggering amount of random encounters kind of killed this game for me, and I really, really want to finish it. Just there are squares which I dread as I know every time I walk into it I'll have a huge battle waiting for me. I usually stop playing after Orkogre castle...
Dungeon Lords - again, could have been great if they finished it, but a game stopper mid way through...
The Witcher - I really want to like this, but I just can't finish it. I don't like any of the characters (except... Zolton Chavney (or whatever.)) I also don't want to pick a side, too depressing.
I guess what I'd say is there are pretty good features even in the worst of cRPG's. I don't think there are any worsts, as there has been a lot of innovation even in the crummiest effort. Wish I tried more of the Spiderweb Softare games, that I had played any of the KOTOR games, and that I had and there was an updated version of Dragon Wars...

Get past Orkogre, and then get into the wilds. It gets worse before it gets better, but it does get better. This is probably one of the most hardcore RPGs, and grind laden RPGs ever made. If you actually make it to the Umpani areas, though, it starts to rock

i liked a lot of others. i like the icewind dale games, temple of elemental evil. too bad it was so darn buggy. troika could have been good as a developer if their games weren't riddled with bugs. neverwinter night and the sonic game bioware created were good also.
most disappointing would be the old old ultima games. i just never liked them. neverwinter nights 2 also. what an overloaded, overwhelming engine that thing had. the prologue was boring as anything. i'll give it a try again sometime down the road, but not like i expected at all.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2

Mass Effect
FF7
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
Most disappointing:
Fallout 3!!!!!!

1. Planescape Torment
2. Icewind Dale series (more of a D&D action game really)
3. Baldur's Gate series
4. Vampire - TMB
5. The Witcher
The Worst:
1. Other than pretty much what everyones stated (ToEE, PoR and Oblivion) for the life of me I've never understood JRPG's they are all a bit "cutesy" for my liking. So I guess the Final Fantasy games are among my most disappointing RPGs of all time. Though I stick to my PC for games I did enjoy Final Fantasy 8 on my PS1.

BG 2 - Best RPG
KOTOR - Star Wars RPG that was better than all three of the prequal movies
Jade Empire - Loved the setting and story even if the combat was a little wonky
Mass Effect - Had its flaws, but just one of those games I can play again and again
Pool of Radiance - The Gold Box game from the 80's
Ultima IV- Best of the Series
Most Disappointing
NWN 2 - I liked the story but the technical glitches got to me
Oblivion/Fallout 3 - I just can't get into Bethesda games
KOTOR 2 - If the game had been allowed 6 more months would have amazing, but it was shipped early and was lacking in story.
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age - Ugg just ugg
Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor - Some game should not be remade.

Well, I do have Wizardry 7 on 3 1/2", CD, and Wizardry Gold, so I have no excuse. I'll see if I can scrounge up my save games. Thanks.aerows wrote...

I just realized that I was complaining about the constant battle in Wizardy 7 and yet I finished IWD 1 & 2, which should come with a medal for rampaging through infinite waves of horror.
The Ultima's? I guess it depends on when you played them. When Ultima IV came out, believe me at the time it was head and shoulders ahead of other RPG's. I remember the spiral notebook with tons and tons of notes from each town. Even excellent games such at the time such as Bard's Tale and the Wizards Crown series didn't really capture the depth of Ultima IV and V.
Even now, who among us would sail all the way from Trinsic to New Magincia just to be told the stone lies in Paws or whatever. Then get yon stone, but upon return realize they forgot to get the mantra of humility. Not me, bub.

Disappointing Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, NWN 2, FFXII

1. Fallout Series
2. Elder Scroll Series
3. The Bard's Tale (one of the first RPGs I ever played and still one of my favorites)
4. Darklands - for those who never played it, this little gem from the early 90s had you battling demons and cultists in medieval Germany.
5. Guild Wars: Nightfall - one of the best storylines I've experienced in a multiplayer game.
Most Disappointing:
1. Temple of Elemental Evil
2. Gothic 3 - great potential but way too many bugs.
3. Hellgate London
4. Icewind Dale

Terranigma
Morrowind
Torment
Chrono Trigger
(Dragon Age, though I may just like it because it's new and currently enjoying it, not sure if it will stand the test of time)
Most Dissapointing:
Oblivion
Fable
Fable II
If there have been other dissapointments, I must have blocked them out.

After a little playing, does Dragon Age compare to Torment? Is it in the same league?
Also, is there anyone who played Planescape: Torment and _didn't_ like it?

Oblivion - I loved the freedom and the massive world to play in. The faction quest lines were utterly engrossing. Some of the side quests could be utterly delightful. Mehrune's Razor showed the world what good DLC should look like and the Shivering Isles is probably the best expansion to be released for a game since The Conquerors for Age of Empires II >.<
Most Disappointing
Fable - I was enraptured with the pretty picture Peter Molyneux painted for this game. A world where you literally grew up with the story. Where you could see mountains in the far off distance and you could walk there and explore. A world where your every action influenced the world around you. It took only eight hours to conquer that deep and open world.
Honourable Mention
Fable II - This was my favourite game of 2008. I'm still not sure where it sits in my personal RPG tree, but it's certainly well up there. Lionhead got their act together and delivered a unique and enjoyable world. Varied, yet simple combat. Lovely setting. Good storyline and there was something quite compelling about wasting your time in all kinds of extravagant ways. Be that looking to expand your property empire or seeing just who you could have a bit of rough and tumble with!

If you liked Oblivion, I recommend you try out Morrowind Game of the Year edition, as I was utterly disappointed with Oblivion compared to Morrowind - and my expectations were quite high. It just lacked character, and fantasy... Note, graphics will be less fancy (still agreeable enough) and fast travel is not available at will.
Note: install one of the expansions upfront - the original diary was a disaster!
I note Planetscape Torment mentioned here often - I am interested what is good about it? Story, combat system, characters?

Best RPGs
Planescape: Torment: Frankly what other RPG's should aspire too if at all possible. If you like RPGs and have not experienced this...then go and buy yourself a copy. No excuses. =P
Baldur's Gate 1+2: An epic story told over 2 games (with meaningful expansions) that see you raise up from a lowly student to the throne of a god. Great character interactions, solid game play, and a miniature-giant space hamster who apparently has a particular combat style based on the opponent's occular vision.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura: The combination of steam-punk vs magic was something that really hit a chord with me, I personally felt it was imaginative, compelling and well executed (save for the bugs!).
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines: Again, something that thought outside the 'standard' fantasy genre with RPGs. It was dark, gritty, sensuous and ticked all the right boxes for such a universe. Shame about the buggy nature, but the community has done wonders fixing those issues.
Fallout 1+2: It's witty, sharp, clever, and you get to hit people in the groin with a sledgehammer if they annoy you, not to mention the hilarity that ensues when you have a character with <4 Intelligence who can only communicate with grunts.
Divine Divinity: Ok this is rather more on the hack+slash side of RPGs in comparison to the others, yet I found it to be rather fun, with a decent mix of character development, over-arching storyline and clever dialogue.
Neverwinter Nights: SoU + HotU: The original campaign was ok, but it's the two add-ons that for me personally held the best parts.
TES III: Morrowind: At first it can seem rather TOO large, complex, and...browny/greeny/grey. Once you delve into it however i found it to be a deep and compelling RPG, in many ways 'better' than its following sequel in the factors that count the most. The modding capabilities have also helped hugely in customising it to the game YOU want to experience.
Most Disappointing RPGs
Knights of the Old Republic II: Ok it wasn't completely disappointing, but you could feel that it was not finished, and that's something that grated with me throughout. I haven't had the chance to try out the TSL Restored mod yet, that'll most likely be on the cards after DA:O and Borderlands have had their chance.
Hellgate: London: (Yes more hack/slash related again) Great premise, coupled with the most incompetent management I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. If put into the hands of any well-respected developer this game could have shone, but the people in charge over at the deceased Flagship Studios were lazy, stubborn and never properly connected with the community. One of the biggest disappointments I've ever had with a PC game considering it could have had such potential.
Gothic III: It just never really followed on from the successful things they used in Gothic II. The voice acting was worse than before, the story felt disjointed in a way, and although I did complete it, for me it didn't really fulfil me as much as its predecessor did.
Ultima IX: Ascension: Buggy, inconsistent, dumbed-down, broken, rushed.... yes, one that hasn't seen the light of day that much, and I doubt it ever will.
On-The-Fence RPGs
These are ones I'm still slightly torn with. In some aspects they excel, in others they're weaker than they could have been.
Oblivion + Fallout 3: Yes I've committed a cardinal sin by combining these two into 1 section, but the similarities to compare are rather vivid. The main saving grace with these two is their insane capacity for modifications. There are some really talented modders in both communities, and it shows with some high quality mods that really do add to both games.
The Witcher: The first thing that struck me was the slight...grindyness to it. This is however counterbalanced with a rich lore and choice system; quite frequently I was impressed in seeing how previous actions had impacted on the game play in later stages.
Mass Effect: Similarities between side-quests and things outside the main story-arc was my main gripe with ME, go down to planet, find deposits, kill things to complete quest, go to next planet. Yes ok this is a rather drastic generalisation that isn't entirely fair, but it felt that the side-quests could have had something more to them.
That's about it I think, best not add more even if there is something I've forgotten >.<

Best:
1. Baldurs gate series, awesome then, awesome now, Dragon age is the only game i've played which has the same level of concentrated win. Dragon age gets a shared 1st place as well, even if I havent played it enough to become a raging fanboy.
2. Kotor series, it has LIGHTSABERS, and HAIRY MEN LIVING IN TREES GROWLING AT EACHOTHER, and great RP, and Keira, yes, I loved kotor.
3. TES Oblivion, yes. I liked this. Bite me. Heavily modded though, real heavy, we're talking gigs of mods here. I agree that the unmodded version sucked. A lot.
4. Final fantasy 9, face it, this game has everything a good game needs, i've finished it... Eh... I stopped counting mkay? And I still play it often.
5. World of Warcraft, Let the flaming commence, I liked WoW. I've followed the warcraft story since warcraft 1, even if I couldnt read the english and the speaking sounded like gibberish when I played that and didnt understand the story, but that counts anyway! Keep in mind that this does not include the expansions though. The expansions killed my nolife-life.
Worst:
1. Daikatana, no comment.
2. Final fantasy 8, once again, no comment.
3. Final fantasy 11, Wacky controls, MMO focused on console, character creation made me laugh with all the males being all hardcore with funky music, standing there in a manly posture, doing manly things filled with manlyness, and all the females basically stripping without taking their clothes off.
4. Final Fantasy 12, I spy with my eye a pattern.
5. Sacred, Diablo did it better, 'nuff said.

1. Vampires TMB
2. Arcanum of steamworks & magick obscura
3. Morrowind
4. Diablo 2
5. KOTOR
6. Fallout 1 and 2
7. Divine Divinity
Worst
1. BG - Face it, it isnt a good game.
2. IWD 1
3. Jade empire
4. All the FF games
5. Sacred
6. Mass Effect
7. Oblivion - Possibly the worst FPS with swords ever made, and then they claim its an RPG.
8. Fallout 3 - Then all we do is make all the colours brown and replace the swords with guns!
9. IWD 1 and 2
10. NWN
