You know... Anders siding with the Templars doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Not only is it a complete contradiction to everything he's ever said and done, but why would Meredith even allow that to happen? I'd need to see the scene first hand, and even if I did, I doubt this would have been logical... I mean... really? Anders helping Templars after killing the Grand Cleric??? Hawke must have some kind of mind control ability I'm not aware of.
I have been rivaling him, and after I saved him from killing the girl in his Justice quest, you can call him an abomination. He agrees and says the templars might be right. That's when he asks if you want him to leave the party or stay. Following this line of reasoning, it's not a leap to make him admit he is wrong again, post chantry boom. Someone in a romance with another person will do all sorts of crap- including betraying their core beliefs, at times. Anders idolizes the PC when you romance him...borderline obsession.
Since the type of character you play affects how the game shapes itself, I don't think it is unreasonable to include the rivalry outcome. It has been a completely different game experience for me, having Anders as a rival. Makes me want to weep alot.
