I'm not reading 7 pages of this, so I don't know if this has been said yet.

Meredith is the acting Viscount in Kirkwall, yet Aveline was not reporting to her. Aveline was staying true to her charge as the Captain of the Guard, and was pretty much telling the templars to butt out of her business and mind theirs. Cullen states that many templars feel that Meredith should consolidate power by taking over the guard, and they try several times to make Aveline step down.

So let's take a look at the situation. Meredith has been petitioning Elthina for some time to Annul the Circle, and is constantly refused. She is the Knight-Commander of Kirkwall, and even before Hawke steps off the boat and into the gallows, she's the power in Kirkwall. After Dumar's death, she steps up and becomes the acting Viscount of a city-state...essentially the ruler. She is laying down the pressure on the mages very hard, squeezing harder and harder to destroy blood magic, destroying any environment where a mage can feel safe and secure emotionally and psychologically. She allows abuses of all kinds to take place under her watch, and does nothing to enforce Chantry law on the templars (Making Harrowed mages tranquil being one of the many, templars also take vows, but rape seems to be quite common). She is paranoid and sees enemies in every last corner. She accuses her own templars of being victims of blood magic....even after killing all the mages if you side with the templars.

She pretty much sums up insane to me. Sociopathic, power-hungry, and a general pain in the butt.

Zombie thread.

Seriously, do people troll down the subject thread for pages and pages and decide to resurrect these things out of some kind of necrophilia fetish or something?

I can understand not necro-ing a thread that's asking how to solve a puzzle or something once the original question has been answered, but is it really so wrong to resurrect a discussion thread if you find the topic interesting?  New people come to the forum all the time, and presumably have thoughts about the same topics that prior posters have had.  Why start up a new thread every time?

I think Meredith started out disturbed, but perhaps not outright insane.  She must have had something rational in her mind to rise to power, I think.  But she was definetly a zealot and a bigot (against mages) way before the idol entered the picture.  I role play it as the idol stripping away whatever was left of her ability to resist the paranoia she had already.
