No. You end up pleasing no one. DAO was liked by one kind of player. DA2 was created to cater to another kind of player. The player who liked DAO is disappointed, the other kind of player is happy. One crowd says, "I don't like the new Dragon Age". The other crowd responds, "I don't understand how you can't like it. It's the best thing since the invention of diaper pins!" Neither side will convince the other. A DA3 that tries to be a middle ground between DAO and DA2 will please neither. The DAO'ers will say it's not enough, the DA2'ers will say "hey DA2 was perfect why ruin it!" And then, only then, they will begin to understand how DAO fans feel today...

No.
Its better to focus on your core audience and make them happy.
Youd make something that turns them away aswell as not attract anyone new if your not careful.

You of course cannot cater to all gamers in one game. That is why we have so many genres.
Not one game has everyone playing it.

The biggest groups are divided up into Shooter games and RPGs(namely WoW).

Heh, probably posted on another page, too lazy to read.

DA2 imho tried to cater to everyone. Worked out well, eh?

It is sad when games become a business plan rather than an artistic vision. I think that's why I play a lot of indie titles these days. At the beginning not many people owned computers and even less had the knowledge to program but that's changed. Flower, Minecraft, Limbo etc. I find I enjoy games more when the creators themselves enjoyed making them.

Are you Yahtzee's aborted kleenex love child? You sometimes sound like him! (which is good!)

I absolutely agree here - when developers have to start worrying about whether the game will sell X million copies or not, and tailoring it to a specific audience, it's just not going to have the same amount of love and attention put into it as a game written for themselves.

I tend to be the same way when programming - if it's something I'm writing for myself, I'll put 110% into it.  If I'm writing to someone else's spec, I tend to get lazy and cut corners.

But it is the biggest bang for the buck that drives any industry, and I have a feeling that this is where games are probably going to go. I for one will certainly not be so quick to buy a game anymore. I also have concerns that many of the game genres I enjoy will be an online thing only, which I will not do.

Very true! And I admire you for it. I don't hate it, but neither do I love it. As Yatzee Guy said Dragon Age: Bleeeeh for me. I want either and RPG or an action hack and slash. Not a half and half.

I wasn't aware that DA2 tried to cater to RTS, FPS, TPS, Social Network, Platformer, and Racing gamers.

Interesting idea though. Perhaps in DA3.
