It is sad when games become a business plan rather than an artistic vision. I think that's why I play a lot of indie titles these days. At the beginning not many people owned computers and even less had the knowledge to program but that's changed. Flower, Minecraft, Limbo etc. I find I enjoy games more when the creators themselves enjoyed making them.

Are you Yahtzee's aborted kleenex love child? You sometimes sound like him! (which is good!)

I am married to an Englishman, sadly he's not Yahtzee.

Damn, I love the English, and I admit to being an accent ho'.  ROFL! Yahtzee's aborted kleenex child, you make me laugh so hard.

scots are better :P (semi serously)

Haven't had any experience with Scots. I dig Sebastian and his brogue. If he wasn't married to Andraste I'd ruin him.

As for my Englishman, he just started playing Origins for the first time a week ago and said, "You know I look a lot like this Alistair chap."

To which I replied, "That's why we keep the lights on."

I think a balance is needed to make a successful game.

The mainstream is where the money is, but it is hardly a loyal customer base. If your game doesn't have the latest graphics, doesn't fulfill that need for adrenaline- pumping action, or if it isn't advertised well enough to get the word out, it won't sell. Depending 100% on this group is a HUGE gamble that can have big risks or rewards.

Niche markets are where you tend to get your loyal fans from. All you have to do is cater to their desires, and they will buy your game. Once you have a fan hooked on your company, they will continue to buy every game you make until you disappoint them. They will do the advertising for you, since they will be so enthusiastic about the title that word will spread in a nerd-to-nerd fashion. If you make a decent game, you can make a pretty tidy profit for a small developer off of a niche group. You won't get rich or produce AAA games from them alone, however.

IMHO, the best balance is to bring in as many mainstreamers as possible without alienating your fan base. I think this can be accomplished by giving the niche gamers everything they want, while giving the mainstreamers everything you can give them without alienating your fans. The game needs to change a bit from game to game in a series, but (IMHO again) it shouldn't change so much as to be unrecognizable. In completely changing #2 from #1, you are risking the alienation of your entire fanbase, and are gambling heavily on those fickle mainstreamers.

Aside: Note that some series can create a new niche audience. Halo fans and Grand Theft Auto fans have, in a way, formed their own respective niches. Trying to change the "formula" of one of these games could be devastating to niche sales, and, as mentioned above, leads you to depending entirely on mainstream sales.

To get back on topic about game companies tending to worship the almighty dollar... I mentioned Flower specifically. The developers were backed by Sony who encouraged them with no deadlines and money which I thought was rather interesting that they'd put so much effort into a PSN title. The result of all that extra time to fine tune the emotions the game was intended to invoke paid off in unexpected ways. The developers themselves were surprised by the response from users and reviewers alike. Truth be told it's the only game I can think of that made me feel like I was given complete freedom. Laidlaw says that text is not always a good medium for emotion, Flower achieved it with melody.

No. You end up pleasing no one. DAO was liked by one kind of player. DA2 was created to cater to another kind of player. The player who liked DAO is disappointed, the other kind of player is happy. One crowd says, "I don't like the new Dragon Age". The other crowd responds, "I don't understand how you can't like it. It's the best thing since the invention of diaper pins!" Neither side will convince the other. A DA3 that tries to be a middle ground between DAO and DA2 will please neither. The DAO'ers will say it's not enough, the DA2'ers will say "hey DA2 was perfect why ruin it!" And then, only then, they will begin to understand how DAO fans feel today...

If there exists FO3 fans who are ranting about DA2 not being like DAO, the original FO series fans will now take the opporutnity to laugh in your face.

I am a FO3 fan and rant often about DA2. However, when I first saw the FO3 at E3 I had never even heard of FO1 or FO2 but I understand that the decade between releases and leap from 2D to 3D generally allowed for more reason for change than a 18 month sequel using the same engine.

I guess those folks are free to laugh derisively now.
