"Here's what we know: The Reapers are coming. These highly advanced aliens indulge in galactic purging every now and again. Perhaps they come to gather our technology; perhaps they bask in the thrill. But after two games, the Reapers are no more interesting than the aliens in Independence Day, and we know even less about them. Surely, the developer that created Jon Irenicus can do better than this. "

Thoughts?

no offence but no one knows anything yet. just wait till the game releases.

me1- geth

me2- collectors

me3- reapers

do people actually think that that saving the reapers for the final act is a bad move? if anything it keeps the lore alive.

They have an opinion. What's wrong with that?

And I have to agree a little bit. Mass Effect 2 didn't give me more reason to take them serious or fear them. We don't learn (much) more about them. The Human Reaper doesn't help either.

Dull? While I love Jon Irenicus, the Reapers want to destroy the planet and wipe entire civilizations from exixtance. Perhaps Gamespot needs a little more perspective?

Haters gonna hate. Even if they own somewhat popular online gamer websites.

The Reapers are not a personal enemy like Saren, they are a Cthuluhu-esque horror from beyond the Galaxy that will devour all things for reasons that we cannot possibly fathom.  There is no reasoning with them.  There is no middle ground.  There is a very unlikely survival or certain annihilation.

Well considering the Reapers so far have, wrecked the Citadel's ****, killed us, harvested millions of humans, caused us to destroy an entire system and are busy molesting Earth in the trailer. I'd say they're pretty effective villains. Gameplay wise what ME3 needs is like Harbinger (or whoever the main villain is) to have an avatar they can use to fight you and it needs to be horribly, brokenly, overpowered to where even on casual you can't do anything but run away when it shows up. Something like that would go along way in establishing their threat.

Depends on the Reaper, Sovereign was far from dull, Harbinger on the other hand....
Overall though, they aren't dull.

And when I was thinking that IGN is terrible, now Gamespot has to go with this comeback that they are way worse.

In other words :Darkspawn in space. And the darkspawn were the most boring thing about DA:O for me, the interesting part of that game ended  after the Landsmeet, after that it was just dutyfully completing my game.

I hope that the reapers show more sense than just "We destroy everything for a never explained reason"

Not every villain has to be understandable, there are things that are beyond comprehension. It may not be to your liking but it is a compelling position for a villain to take especially one as alien as the Reapers.

I would bet that it would not be to most people's liking if we didn't get some further insight and development on the Reapers though. If they remained faceless killer robots all through ME3, not many will be happy about that.

Why do they need an explination? No one complains that Sauron didn't have any clear motives beyond destroying the free world and taking everything over. Seriosly the "reproduction" explination was stupid enough as it is. They're unknowable machines, let them stay that way.

95% of people would not care at all. 2.5% would complain they werent spoonfed information that they didn't need to know and 2.5% would be happy.

I play a video game for myself. When the Reapers were introduce in ME1, I thought it was the coolest idea ever. I still do. Nobody else's opinion can take away my experience and my anticipation.

Er, people actually do complain about Sauron. But if you get into the rest of the backstory he is more interesting than he appears in the LoTR trilogy.

It is unfair to compare any other game to BG, it is impossible to reach those dizzying heights again.

Sometimes the scariest monsters are the ones we can never understand. I'm glad we're going back to the "roots" of ME1 and tieing up the story, the Reapers have always been the main villain.. not sure why anyone would expect that to change in the third and final act of the story.

On that note, it's fair to point out that people complain about everything.

I really do like the unknown nature of the Reapers, I would not mind some insight, but complete explanation would destroy much of the mystery.

"Gamespot deems the Reapers a "dull" villian!!"

Not much point in me reading the article then, since i know i already disagree with it.
