Hi guys,
This is my first post, and it's sadly a cry for help.

I'm worried that I might have lost my ME1 and ME2 save files. When I replaced my old 360 model with the 360 S model last year, I copied my most important save files to a memory stick and then transfered it to the 360 S. My old 360 and HDD are long gone.

Today I decided to download the two DLC's I haven't played yet, but then I discovered that there was no "Load" option in the menu, only "New game". There's a 256kB file on the HDD called "Mass Effect 2 Importer" which seemingly has the data of a John Shepard Lv43, but I'm not able to load it. My ME1 save file is 10MB, so I don't think the "Mass Effect 2 Importer" file is the complete save file. Does anyone know what this file is?

I think I've screwed up royally by overlooking a file I should've transfered to my new 360, so I guess I'll just have to start a new game, but I hope someone can help.

I tried to start a new ME2 campaign using the ME1 import file, but that didn't work either. It's like my 360 S can't find the files on the HDD, but they're definitely there. Maybe I should try and copy the files to an external source, and then see if the 360 can run them from there.

Although I love ME and ME2, I hadn't planned to play through them again before ME3. It's a real bummer then that my files seem to be corrupt or something like that...

Any ideas? :crying:

Some things do come immediately to mind.

(1) Are you still using the same Gamertag?

(2) Do you use XBox Live much? If you do use it I would suggest recovering your Gamertag.

Be aware that if you do play offline a lot you could probably lose data like achievements that haven't been uploaded yet. As I understand it recovering a Gamertag will only show the data the last time you signed into XBox Live. (EDIT: Could be wrong though.)

(3) Have you transferred licenses yet?

(4) The Mass Effect importer is a separate utility. I am unsure if it stores all ME saves there as default. Mine is 440 KB in size so you could be correct, but I would imagine your problem lies elsewhere.

(5) Can access your ME saves? If you can then perhaps you could reinstall the Mass Effect importer.

(6) Your files don't sound as if they are corrupt, though I could be wrong on that.

Thanks for replying.
I'm using the same Gamertag and I'm "always" logged onto Live, all of my ME1 and ME2 Achievements are intact. I've also transfered my licenses, but it didn't help.

I'm gonna try and copy/transfer the save files to an extern memory unit (memory stick, most likely), and then re-install them. I doubt it'll work, but I'm crossing my fingers.

I have read that ME2 uses some sort of copyright system which prevents copying saves (but not transfer I think).

Another thing to consider, though I'm not sure if it will help, would be to clear the cache. (I have doubts that this will help but you never know with these things.)

I'm afraid that could be the case. Thanks for the tip about removing the cache, I'll try it -- you never know, it may work.

Have you tried putting in your ME1 disc and seeing if you can load your ME1 saves or did you just try to import them using ME2?

When you beat ME1 on the XBox it creates a hidden file on the console within the Publisher Data. This is the file that is used when you do a New Game+ and when you import a ME1 character into ME2. These files can not be seen via browsing the hard drive, and as such you can't "Copy" them to a memory stick. The only way you can save your ME1 completion files to another console is by using the "Transfer" function, which I talked about here.

Since so few people know about it, I'm guessing you didn't do that and so your ME1 game completion files are gone. However, not all is lost. If you copied your ME1 save game files to your new console you should still be able to pop in ME1 and load them. If you have a save file towards the end of the game (Right before the final boss for example) you can quickly beat the game again on your new console and it will create your ME1 game complete career save on it. Which you can then import into ME2.

I believe OBakaSama is correct about not being able to Copy ME2 save files. However, using the transfer (not copy) function does work. If you used Copy instead of Transer, then your ME2 save files have disappeared into the ether.
Sorry :(

It sounds like you'll have to play ME2 again, but at the very least I hope my post helps you so that you don't have to replay ME1.

Thanks for the tip and information, Janus Prospero.

I did what you recommended, and it worked! I beat ME1 using a late save file, and I'm now able to import my character to ME2. I hadn't thought of that, so I'm very grateful.

It doesn't look like I'm able to retrieve the ME2 save file, so I'll just have to man up and play through it again.

I played as a soldier on normal on my first playthrough -- should I change my class and difficulty to make it more interesting? Any tips?
