Hi to all,

I'm new in the modding community; i've never modded a game in my life.  However, I really love this game but I have a phobia of sorts with Spiders.  As you all know, they run rampant through parts of this game.  I am so passionate about playing this game through that i'm willing to learn how to Mod the game a bit so that I can enjoy it more.

Can anyone tell me how to replace all the Spiders in the game with another enemy; like a Wolf or something?  I'm downloading the toolset now and am learning how to use it.  Any information you can give me will be very helpful.

Thank you.

-Mario

It could be possible, but while making it you'd need to look at the spiders whole lot if its done via changing spider model for example.

Does anyone else know how to replace a group of characters with something else using the toolset?

Hmmm... I'm not 100% sure, but can't you just override the spider models? extract the wolf models, rename them to the same names as the 9 spider models have, and put the files in the appropriate override directory....

I'm afraid of spiders as well. But in this game you can crush em, burn em, freeze em and much more. Oh good times! Spider haters all across the world rejoice for we can finally get our revenge on this hairy creatures of evil! :D

Adinos, thank you very much for this.  I've never, ever, ever, modded a game before so for me, this might not be as easy as it sounds.  However, you've given me something to start with.  I'm now looking for some instructions on how to do what you just suggested.  What you said sounds like it should work in theory.

BTW, there are 9 different Spider models in this game?  Unreal.

There are 3 types of spiders, and each have 3 different variants, so 9 models.

You just need the wolf model from the erf.

You can extract them by yourself by getting tazpn's Command Line Tools
http://social.bioware.com/project/218/

The models are located in modelhierarchies.erf.

Though you only need c_wolfa_0.mmh and c_wolfa_0.phy

The spiders are named

c_corspidra_0.mmh
c_corspidra_0.phy
c_corspidra_2.mmh
c_corspidra_2.phy
c_corspidra_3.mmh
c_corspidra_3.phy

c_giaspidra_0.mmh
c_giaspidra_0.phy
c_giaspidra_2.mmh
c_giaspidra_2.phy
c_giaspidra_3.mmh
c_giaspidra_3.phy

c_poispidra_0.mmh
c_poispidra_0.phy
c_poispidra_2.mmh
c_poispidra_2.phy
c_poispidra_3.mmh
c_poispidra_3.phy

You copy and rename the wolf files to match the spider ones, and place them to your
My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\override

The game does everything from there on. Mind though, that the spider animations will be used for the wolf, causing them to move in very spectacular way, and the sounds are not changed either. They even come down from the ceiling and throw webs at you.

All in all, they are the bunch of scariest wolves I've ever seen

Ummm... shouldn't there be a way to do this by replacing the spiders themselves with wolves, rather than swapping out the models and renaming them? Isn't there a "creatures for this encounter" field or a way to delete the spiders and place wolves, or somethin'...?

Creatures are placed using the area editor, you'd need to edit the area to swap out which creatures are in any given encounter. And unfortunately we haven't released the main campaign's designer resources yet, so I can't think of a way to do it right now.

Just blue-skying here but perhaps you could come up with a script that gets a list of all creatures in the area, checks their appearance type (via GetCreatureTypeclassification, found in 2da_data_h? Or some related function? Dunno), and then if it finds spiders it destroys the creature? You could use a PCRSRC 2DA set to run the script on "any" area, then whenever you entered an area the script would run and silently wipe out the spider population.

This would likely break some plots, though. For example, in Mage Origin there's a subplot you can follow where you're tasked with killing all the giant spiders that are infesting a storage cave, and destroying the spiders via scripting might leave that one unsolvable. Maybe some sort of auto-kill mechanism that causes spiders to die the moment they appear... though that's not necessarily going to help much with a phobia, since it'd still be kind of freaky having giant dead spiders falling from the ceiling onto you.

Would retexturing the spiders so they're bright pink with goofy faces help, perhaps? :)

Oh, it just occurred to me. The "right" way to change an appearance type is to edit the APR_Base 2DA. This 2DA assigns the model to an appearance and also assigns the various animation blend trees. You could give a spider a wolf's animations this way, preventing the freaky mutant wolves-from-ceilings problem.

To keep things looking thematically consistent you might want to use something like deepstalkers instead of wolves, though.

Thanks to all who replied here.. oh, btw Bryan, your quip about pink faces was pretty funny :-)  I wish I weren't so afraid of the stupid things; especially since this game is so awesome.

I love your idea about deepstalkers instead of wolves and will start working with your suggestions.  However, since I never made a MOD before, this could take me some time.

Thanks to everyone for your help.  If anyone else thinks of anything, please let me know.

Sheesh wouldn't it be nice if everybody had the attitude this fellow does? Never did it before, willing to try anyway, asks nicely for help, positive (tho apprehensive) expectations, and not a flame in sight.

Are you an earthling diskjokk?

Here's some APR_Base.xls Reference Information

Heck, I'm not phobic and I get pretty unsettled whenever one of those spiders hits my PC with its "overwhelm" attack. It's really nasty looking. Nice to have a party member with shield bash handy to smack the thing off of you in those situations.

I stopped playing for a while until I figure out how to replace the Spiders.  I haven't seen their "overwhelm" attack but it sounds like it will send me yelling from the room.  What is their overwhelm attack?  I'm just curious.

The giant spider lunges at the character, knocking them prone, and then straddles the fallen character and holds him down while ripping at him with its fangs. The overwhelmed character is helpless while this goes on, though you can disrupt the attack while it's in progress with a second character by using a shield bash or other such technique.

Lots of nasty noises and fountaining blood, too. Not pleasant.

I think you should retexture your description with a pink goofy face.

Yeah, you REALLY don't want to see this if you're at all phobic about spiders.  I only had it happen to me once, but it was the first spider ever fought (Mage Origin) and it flipped me out something fierce.  Especially since, as a solo player, you can't interrupt it so you have to just sit there and watch it :(

Perhaps if you shapeshift into a spider you can conquer your phobia?

Unfortunately for me, my arachnophobia is far more developed than any of you here. It pisses me of when game developers decide to put spiders in games; especially in RPG games, like there isn't anything else they can imagine as a scary enemy...make it a scorpion like they did in Fallout 3 for example. With fearing something and having a phobia about that thing, there's a huge difference. I assure you, none of the arachnophobics who has the game can't look at the screen when those 8 legged freaks pops out in the screen. I taught my 70 years old dad to play Resident Evil and that's how i got through that game. It's one of the most common phobias on this planet and i detest Bioware for doing this to people like me. I paid for the game but yet i can't play it :( Has anyone heard about such a mod or a cheat that removes spiders in this game, i want to play it so bad but it's impossible for me to do so at this state...i'm begging you people :(

Could you post a save-game where you are about to encounter spiders? Then I would try it!

There are basically two ways to get rid of the spiders. One is to replace the model files with other models (nugs, wolves or whatever) . The other approach is to do a bit of 2DA editing, as described above. However, both approaches are only available to owners of the PC version - console players are...well, stuck with the spiders, unless BioWare releases something for them.
