I have not gotten very far into the game yet. Mostly just trying out different races and classes to see what fits me best before I get into the meat of the story. One thing I do love is the dog's personality. I would love to keep him as part of my team, but his skill set and equipment options seem very limited. Has anyone else used the dog long term? How does it do later in the game? Are there any particular strengths or weaknesses that need to be figured into the team tactics?

all party members seem to have useful talents for particular situations. The dog is no exception. He is fast, as some good crowd control and easy to keep happy. He is also a good at finding things.

It took me a while to get used to the idea of collecting all the party members I could and exchanging them frequently for missions. It is kind of like working up a small army a few people at a time.

I took him with me in the final battle and he died less than my Leliana, who was the second best equipped character next to my main. And actually, I don't think he died at all.

At first he doesn't seem like he'll end up being as strong as your other companions later on, but he's actually fairly powerful even with his limited skills.

As far as tactics go I usually script him to charge / overwhelm mages and ranged enemies, and to use dread howl when he's surrounded, enemies are clustered, or I'm being grabbed. He's more like an off-tank. Just make sure to use the landmarks to boost his stats in an area. And as the poster above said, he does find stuff for you. Most of it is garbage, though.

But to answer your question, no, you're not gimping yourself by sticking with the dog. Everything depends on what kind of party you're running of course.
