Hmm David Gaider has posted something regarding the dialogue wheel. If you haven't seen it yet, here's the link: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/304/index/6993638&lf=8

It's on page 5.  He mentions the possibility of including a pop up with specific text for the PC version.

Seems like a decent compromise.

He also mentions adding a happy/unhappy face icon. I think I'm going to cry now.

As far as the paraphrases themselves go, I don't think we'll be getting rid of them anytime soon. I do think, however, that we can and should work on refining our rules for their use (coupled with the use of better icons). I wouldn't mind seeing an option for a player to hover over a response and get some pop-up text of the resulting wording-- but that might be something that only works for the PC, and not really my forte anyhow since it involves GUI magic. But I'd be in favor of it, even if it's just for those people who will never get past their mental block regarding the paraphrases.

David Gaider wrote...

Possibly, but if it's, say, something that only pops up after hovering over the option for a certain length of time it'd be the player's own doing if they "ruined the surprise", so to speak. I do agree that it might be a slippery slope in terms of expectations-- but if it wasn't that difficult to implement, I wouldn't see the harm. Those people who can't get past the paraphrases/voiced PC on a philisophical level will probably never be entirely happy, but if we can put in something to make it easier for them without impeding our intent it might still be okay.

It's a suggestion I saw on these forums, anyhow, that I've brought up with the team. We'll see if it's something we can actually do. In the meantime, refining the paraphrases and the icons would be more my department.

Omg :o If they actually go through with this I would be extremely happy. Although the dialogue wheel was far from the most problematic thing I had with DA2, it would be a good thing to have in their future DA games. Maybe they'll even bring it over into ME3.

That would be the cry icon you need to press then ;)

Edit:  it did sound like the bottom of the screen is going to be taken over by icons......no space saved then.

Oh well, DA3: The smileys strike back. Here we come.
Press :( or :) and something "awesome" happens!

Nevermind, I'll just go back to my corner now and sulk.

Great, just great. Wonderful. Not.

The only positive thing is the idea of the hover over the response thing to see the actual dialogue. But I very much doubt that will be implemented - it's not really compatible with consoles. And DA2 tells us that if it doesn't work on a console, the PC gamers won't get it either (best example: the tactical camera).

After all, you have a "mental block"... that one was diplomatically disappointing...

Pfff... textbook can't handle criticism guy, it's my party and I cry if  I want to.

Go back to writing novels or whatever, man, I bet you can substitute complete sentences for smileys there as well, because you know, sarcasm is sooooooooo hard to convey through written text!  /sarcasm

Frigging troll.

PS. I was being sarcastic.
PPS. Not really.

Want to join the 'people with a mental block' support group (PwaMB)? I'm thinking we should start one, it sounds pretty serious.

Somewhere,  at EA,  there's a PR person crying into his beer right now.  Because he reads Laidlaw and Gaider's PR,  and watches bridges burn one after the other.

Bioware's steady on track to alienate it's customer base sufficiently to make them another footnote in gaming history.

First rule of buisness,  do not insult your customers when they tell you that your vision isn't acceptable.

First rule of RPG development,  don't replace the dialogue with icons for people who hate RPGs and don't want to be bothered with that nasty reading stuff.

Yes, BPA is short and to the point, that should work. Perhaps mr. Gaider would like to be our first guest speaker to help us overcome this 'mental block' we're suffering from. He'll have to leave his smileys at the door though.

As i've been saying all along, Bioware LOVES the dialogue wheel and paraphrases. It made it into TOR of all things, it's not going anywhere.

but I definetly see them adding a 'see exactly what Protagonist is going to say' feature for DA3.

I'll never use it.

And it won't make anybody who already dislikes it happy, because then DA3 forums will be a whingefest of 'I want to be nice but I don't want to say THAT! Why can't I have multiple ways to say nice things!' or 'The aggressive option isn't dickish enough for me.'

But hey, at least they're trying.

Even if it is a FOOLISH WASTE OF TIME that will doubtfully appease those who already dislike the dialogue wheel.

Pick ONE. Because they pretty much contradict each other. If you don't read what I write, you can't possibly know what value it has.

Ever heard of skim reading?

Oh yes. Dammit, I usually love smileys... deviantArt has one that is very fitting right now. It shows Fella turning around to show his butt.
