Something I want to try is to make the companion armors into separate chest-only outfits for use with the companion armor mod. Is it possible to replace the upgrades you find and buy with armor pieces? If so, how would I do that?

And, while we're on the subject, is it possible to create a retextured armor as a new item (so the original armor still uses the original texture) without going into the mesh itself? I'm not at all familiar with how DA handles art assets. All I know about modding, I learned from Bethesda.

[EDIT] Though, I could just add tintmaps to the companion armors and then use tints to make them look different.

Hmm, yes...

That's a really helpful list, thanks :)

But I still need to know if it's possible to add a new item when you receive a companion armor upgrade, instead of upgrading their unique armor.

Do you mean like a helm or gloves or something when you pick up a upgrade? If so, I don't believe it is possible as all the upgrade does is add stats, almost like adding a rune, to the armor instead of changing the look.

The only way I see this working is if we can find out how the changing of companion armor is accomplished when entering a relationship and adapt that to load a new armor when an upgrade is picked up. I don't know if this is possible without a toolset but that would be my best guess to how it could be done.

I don't mean auto-equip a new armor, because I'm using Thought Process's companion armor mod, and I've stripped companions of their default armor so that the stats don't stack with the pieces I give them. A side effect is that when I get an upgrade, it doesn't do anything (because the armor it's supposed to be upgrading isn't on the companion anymore).

What I'm interested in doing is making it so that instead of upgrading anything, buying or otherwise receiving an upgrade adds a new chestpiece to your inventory so that you can equip it like any other armor. I'd restrict them to the companions, but that's inceidental.

Sounds like you should replace the .uti's of the upgrades with copys of the costume changing armors (modified as desired).

The upgrades are: gen_im_cns_flu_*.uti
And, the costume changing armors are: gen_im_fla_*.uti

The base item type field is of interest here. 2500 is the ID for Follower Armor (costumes) and 5300 is the ID for Follower Upgrade.

Edit: Nevermind, I wasn't familiar with that mod.  You should use normal equipment as the bases, I guess.

Do you know the item type for a standard chestpiece? That's what I'd like to change them to. I don't suppose that would screw anything up, would it? Like, stores that sell upgrades wouldn't suddenly not have them, right?

[EDIT] And do you know where all the .uti files are stored, so I can break 'em open and play with them?

Sure, all base types are in itm_base.gda.

Standard chest is 2000.

Edit1: Items and many other things are in designerresources.rim.  Use pyGFF to extract it.  Edit2:  File > Export All.

Okay, thanks. Is anything different for full-body meshes like robes? Since everything would be based on the companions' unique outfits, I don't want anything screwy going on with hands/feet.
