Anyone? I can't figure it out. Such a simple thing. Please, don't tell me BioWare omitted this feature. What? They did? But why? I"m so pissed because I play this game a lot, like probably too much, but am sick of my keyboard and mouse because I'm already on my computer a lot. My mouse hand needs a break. No more DA...

Silly answer: If you wanted to play with a 360 controller, you should have purchased it on the 360.

Serious answer: The PC version has been specifically designed for use with a mouse and keyboard, due to this the PC GUI is completely different to the Xbox 360 GUI.

Unfortunately for you this means the PC version does not support the Xbox 360 controller - as it is not designed to do so.

But that would mean buying an Xbox. I prefer PC games and normally prefer mouse and keyboard. But this game looks perfect for a controller since there is no element of precision in aiming. And my right hand is hating my mouse lately from too much use.

I love it when other developers include the 360 controller option right out of the box, plug and play. We gamers don't like excuses becaus we already know exactly why you didn't want to deal with debugging.

Hmm... this got me to thinking. Can I use this game with my HotRod joystick used for my arcade cabinet? Probably could just change the keybinds for that but this thread got me thinking about it. :)

I know what you mean. I usually like to play games with controllers as well. What you can do, however, is use a program (I use Pinnacle Profiler) to map out the left side of your 360 controller to movement, the D-Pad for abilities, etc. and use a trackball mouse in the right hand. It certainly isn't the same, but I find it preferable to a standard setup, and it works well if you like to play from the couch.

While I agree that it is sometimes a nice feature, it actually tends to be games that are direct console ports (and in my experience, generally shooters) that were designed to work with Xbox 360 controllers in the first place (a good example of this is Dead Space).

While I appreciate that some people would like this feature, you'll likely find the majority of PC users purchased DA2 because they wanted to play with a keyboard/mouse.

This question was actually asked a few times before the game was released, and BioWare's answer was basically the game (PC vs. Xbox 360 version) has two different control sets/UIs that are not compatible and therefore the PC version will not support the Xbox 360 controller.

Incase you did not know, if you press the "R" key your character automatically attacks the nearest enemy (and after they are all dead, you can also use "R" to loot drops).

You could probably map it, but the console and computer versions use completely different interfaces, so doing it without it being drastically handicapped is not remotely simple.  This is what's called a "reason", not an "excuse" - and excuse is what you go for when you don't want to talk about the reason.  Other developers sometimes include the option, it's true, but you shouldn't suggest that all do - nor should you exclude the fact that these are typically developers who can't be bothered making the interface specific to the system; I find that's a bit of effort it is all too rare too take.

I always find it bizarre when people want to use a controller to play Dragon Age. I could never imagine how uncomfortable and clumsy it would be to play the game that way. I enjoy the freedom the keyboard and mouse gives me to direct my party with my right hand and quickly select abilities mapped to my keyboard with my left hand. I'd never be that fluid with a controller.

This first game didn't have controller support either. Regardless of what anyone thinks of it - it's lame that they didn't give us the option. It's certainly not like they didn't already design the game to be played with one...especially with DA2. There's a time and place when I want to be lazy and play things with a pad, and it would've been nice to have the option.

If you read the above, you would already know that what you just said is completely incorrect. They did not design the (PC) game to be played with one.

The PC and Xbox 360 versions have completely different GUIs/control schemes, what's so hard to understand?

It's easy to see why they didn't - if they did they'd have PS3 users saying why didn't you design it to be played with my PS3 controller, PC users saying why didn't you design it to be played with my gamepad/joystick, etc.

It would, of course, be possible to make the PC version switch to the console GUI and control scheme when the game is set to use a gamepad, but it seems like too much work for a feature practically no-one will ever use.

I personally prefer gamepads over using the keyboard and mouse, given that most of my gaming is done on game consoles rather than on the PC. After trying out Dragon Age: Origins and Awakening on the Xbox 360 and then getting a new computer so I can play its version of those games, I found the movement control scheme on the PC version very awkward in comparison to the console version. That has led me to using Joy2Key at first for playing the games, and then later discovering the joys of writing up my own controller scripts by using GlovePIE. Now I have all the controls that I need right at my fingertips, and with a wireless controller, I can just sit back away from my computer and play the games in a leisurely manner.

Anyway, if you're looking for GlovePIE gamepad controller scripts to use with the Dragon Age games, check out the files I have at Dragon Age Nexus.

Point/click RPGs have always been the domain of PCs. Can you imagine Baldur's Gate with a gamepad??!! THe problem is not enough keys. A keyboard allows hotkey mapping and quick use of inventory items and spells/talents. A gamepad interface for these types of games is just clumsy and not intuitive (as DAO will show you). I know they did a better job with the console interface for DA2, but keyboard/mouse will always be better for shooters, RPG and RTS games.

The whole matter boils down to two things (1) personal preference and (2) implementation of the controls for the game in question.

True, which is why the implementation is different between consoles and PCs.  If the console versions kept the PC interface, there are not enough buttons on the controller to make it work.  THey have to cut corners and add shortcuts for the gamepads.

I am not sure how difficult it would be to implement a toggle between the two interfaces for those PC gamers looking for console controls.

I didn't know that.

Does that mean R=awesome?

I think the issue here is. If you played DA:Origins and compare the gameplay to DA2. The gameplay is completely different. You cannot scroll your camera angle to top down view and pause to pan view area for incoming hostile npc's etc. DA2 is definitely designed to be played on the console. If DA2 was definitely designed to be played on the console. Why not add the scripts to allow PC UI and support the console UI? Other developers allow their fans to do this. To name a few, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Homefront, Metro2033, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2. All these games automatically support console UI and controls if you have an xbox controller plugged in. Why wont Bioware allow its fans to choose? Why is Bioware shafting its fans?
