Hi everyone,  I've got to the top of the mage tower and I can't win the fight with Uldred and the abominations in the Harrowing.  I've tried about 8 times and always run out of health potions and die.  I've tried all kinds of different things and I'm pausing every second to reassign everyone, but it doesn't matter what I try I always run out of health and end up dead.  I'm Elissa (rogue) and I have Zevran (rogue) and Alistair (annoying templar) with me.  I wish I still had Wynne because I could put her on healing, but she insisted on fighting us just outside the Harrowing.  I'm not even close to defeating the Uldred monster because when my party is all dead, he still has about a quarter to a third health left.

I'm very frustrated because I'm enjoying the game a lot and there is so much left to play, but it seems I can't get past this point.

Can anyone help?

Thanks very much,

MelaniePosted Image

Hmmm, yeah this is a tough one - especially if you have no mage. Just as a pointer, you do know to use the Litany of Adralla whenever Uldred tries to turn a circle mage, don't you? It stops the spell dead and you don't have another abomination to deal with...

Hi Ferratinabun, thanks for replying - yes I've been clicking on the Litany of Adralla everytime it runs out, hoping it would save the day, tho I didn't know till now what it did exactly. I've reloaded from the save just before entering the Harrowing and gone right back through the mage tower but can't get out (hoping to get to another town and sell inventory for more health potions) sooooooooo despondent.... apparently there's loads more of the game to be played. Why oh why do they always do these impossible "end of level bosses"? It seems to be about 3 times as hard as anything I've encountered so far.

Just don't know what to do. To go back to the point where I could bring a mage along (Morrigan?) I'll have to go back about 10 hours of gameplay. I can't face going all the way through the mage tower and Fade again. If I email Bioware will they be able to help me? Is there any kind of cheat that would just get me through this point? Or am I simply too wimpy and even if I cheat through, I'll come a cropper again and again?

Thanks again,

Yours miserably,

Mel

Since you fought Wynne you must have agreed with Cullen about killing the mages. I would recommend convincing Cullen that he’s wrong and that the remaining mages should survive. If you can’t do that just don’t give him any straight answers and it’ll be sufficient. I hope you have a save before the Cullen conversation.
Your party mix is a hard one to use.. Wynne is essential. Keep your archers away from Uldred, and just wear him down. Alister will be your tank and will have to go toe-to-toe with Uldred - maximize his defense/armor, and keep healing him.
To know when to use the Litany, watch Uldred - when he starts there's some sign/comment - that is when to use the Litany. If you keep just using the litany there will be gaps, that may allow mages to turn into abominations.

Jeff's right, Wynne will only attack you if you tell Cullen you'll kill the mages. Go back and tell him either you won't, or that you won't decide yet. Wynne won't attack you then.
Apart from that, all I can really offer is general tips. Alistair's your tank, so try to draw all the attention onto him. Without Wynne (and probably even with her) he'll need healing potions. Get him to drink one as soon as his health reaches about 50%. His job is just to take all the hits and remain standing if he can. You and Zevran should be trying to backstab enemies as they swarm Alistair. Zevran's Assassin abilities come in handy here. Try to focus all your party members on the same enemy at a time, and I think it's best to take out the abominations before you focus on Uldred. Don't forget to use poisons and grenades if you have them (I usually do).
Plus, what difficulty level are you playing on? You can always go to the menu and drop it. Might seem a bit of a cheat, but it's better than replaying ten hours of the game if you're really stuck...

Hello Jeffonl1, thanks very much for this suggestion - I kinda assumed that whatever I said Wynne would fight us, because I don't remember saying anything contentious, BUT, I'll try again and choose some different options and see if I can keep Wynne.

Thanks again, I'll report back on how it goes, in case it's useful to anyone else,

:)

Ferretinabun, thanks - I'm actually playing on EASY!!!! I'm not mad enough to try to play ANY game on anything other than easy!!!! Thanks for the tips, I'm feeling a bit more positive now and I'll give it another go, I should have a good pre-Cullen save because I'm positively anal about saving (hate redoing stuff).

Thanks to you both, you're stars!

:)

Yep, that did it - with Wynne healing everyone it was easy - I came out with 10 health potions spare! Many thanks :)

I know this is a bit late, but could you not have taken your party downstairs to where you first meet up with Wynne and select new party members (ie Morrigan). I've always been able to rebuild the party in that one area of the first floor.

Using the Litany just once will also work, apparently. the Last time I went thru the Broken Circle Quest, I had enough Heavy Hitters that the last time he said "Do you accept the Gift?" (or something like that), the Timer was still going. Luckily, Uldred died before anything came of that....

And slight spoiler: If you don't use the Litany at all, it counts as if you sided with the Templars, or so I was told some time ago. Allows Wynne to be with you for the battle against Uldred, anyways...

Actually In my first play thorugh I didn't use the litany once and I got the achievement for siding with the mages.

In which case, you obviously killed Uldred before all the mages had been turned.
In short:
If you do not use the litany and Uldred turns all the mages into abominations, it counts as you siding with the Templars. Probably just because there are no mages left.
If you do use the litany or simply kill Uldred before he manages to turn all the mages, you still get to select which side you come down on - crunch time for the decision comes during the conversation you have with Gregor after you've completed the quest. You can recommend all the mages be confined/killed just in case, as Cullen advises (side with Templars), or you can assure Gregor that the abominations have all been dealt with (side with mages).

There's a mod for this type of situation, it's called something like 'replase party anytime'. And yes, I do remember that in the area where you enter you're allowed to change the party...

Mages are actually essential in this game, so maybe the OP did not allow Morrigan to join the party?
Isn't Morrigan sort of forced upon us, though?

Another nifty little mod is the 'travel anywhere mod'.

And where's Sten and Morrigan? and Leliana? Zevran is actually a very good character in a fight, you just need to use his hide in shadows abilities as well as his momentum and flurry abilities...
