I'm a fan of NWN. Is Baldur's Gate anything like that? Is the fighting the same and does it contain the same abilities, feats and spells as seen in the NWN series?
Like NWN?

Baldurs Gate is based on the 2nd edition D&D ruleset, while NWN is based on the 3rd edition. So some of the abilities and spells are similar, but there are alot of differences also.
The combat in Baldurs is more tactical as your controlling a party of 6, as opposed to just yourself with the henchmen that you do not have complete control over.
For me, when i want to play single player, i'll play a game like Baldurs / Torment / IWD. But for MP, i'll play NWN, because it's the closest thing ( video game wise ) to playing an game of old school p&p d&d with your buddies. ( toolset, custom community content & dm client )
I would DEFINATLY recommend it though. Check out Baldurs Gate Trilogy , as it allows you to play Baldurs Gate, Shadows of Amn and the expansions in one game using the engine from Baldurs Gate 2.

IMO Baldurs Gate, particularly the 2nd part: Shadows of Amn, has a much deeper texture and is better written than NWN. Besides more complex battles - if you wish you can have 5 NPCs in your party, each with different types of skills - the storyline interaction with NPCs is much more frequent, not just when your PC gets a promotion. All of this was lost when they went hogwild for 3D effects in NWN and basically threw out the baby with the bathwater.

BG2 is better, is all i can say.
In terms of banter really, though some of the NWN things are cool, especially since u can have paladin/mages.
If you arent comfortable at first with BG2. you could try IWD2 first, get accustomed to the controls and graphics whilst playing 3rd edition (bar lack of banter and less roleplay).
Then go to BG2 with the secon edition.
Nothing like classics - even though i was probably not even born when BG1 came out (though it might have been released in 1998, so i could be mistaken)

So thinking is required and you have to plan who you have in your party? Sounds interesting. Thanks for all the replies you three. I know they are selling all the games + expansions in a pack on Amazon.co.uk for £10 so I'll probably pick it up later this year.

there are scripts in BG2 if they help, some which give automated orders for your party, mostly during battle.

To answer the original question:
Yes, many of the same spells exist, and most of them do the same sort of thing, but there will be tweaks.
There are no feats at all.
There are only a limited number of abilities, mostly concentrated on a couple of classes (rogues disarming traps, clerics turning undead, etc).
The basic ruleset is VERY different.
