Once Orsino turned, the Rite should have been enacted despite Meridith.

One man shouldn't condemn an entire Circle to execution.

The circle pretty much turned into a blood mage orgy anyway before that, but one man shouldn't condemn an entire circle to execution when he has no bindings to it in anyway whatsoever.

AKA Anders.

When the apprentice wakes up and starts killing people, is a good indicator. Otherwise it is when the mage is taking too long.

But those are the exact points a Knight-Commander looks for, amongst others. They don't just wake up one morning and say, "oh man, this day already sucks, I'm gonna call for an annulment!"

An abomination need not take form instantly, it can wait and bloom later on in their life at any point depending on the bargain made.

And that's pretty much what Meredith did...

"Hey that Apostate just blew up a church and surrendered, I'm gonna go storm the mage tower instead and murder children because the people WILL WANT BLOOOOD, HOT JUICY BOILING MAGE BLOOD TO FILL THEIR BLOOD GOBLETS!"

The fact that an abomination might only take form later in life, is the reason they kill all mages during an annulment. If they took form immediately and if Blood Magic were detectable, they would just kill the Blood Mages and Abominations.

And Meredith wanted the Circle annulled long before Anders blew up the Chantry. That he did, just gave her right to do so.

I wish they would have shown us why better. Her quest involved apostates who ran from the Circle (because she is doing a bad job). But her failure to do her job properly is not that pertinente of a reason to want to wipe the Circle out.

I feel that Meredith would have been a more sensible character, if her sidequests show us conspirators from within the Circle (and rmeoved the idol completely would be even better). Would have been a good opportunity to follow up some leads vis a vis Quentin's research note.

Well, there is also the fact that elements within the Circle is planning to overthrow her, and that the First Enchanter is refusing to let her Templars investigate the Gallows for Blood Magic.

You mean the ones from Orsino's quest? She didn't know anything about them. If they showed us Meredith finding out or suspecting that she is losing hold not only of mages, but also Templars, I can see her wanting to get rid of the Cirle entirely. But I don't recall being able to see that. Even if her reasons are obvious, showing us details like that make character.

As for refusing investigation. I was under the impression that Meredith asked for the Right long before that.

You get the same quest about them if you side with Meredith. She knew about them, but she thought that the First Enchanter was involved, and didn't want to move against them, untill she could get proof that he was involved.

Hmm I guess it was because I sided with neither, I did quests for both.

In my case, still doesn't make that much sense though. IIRC it was mentionned that she didn't know.

Don't you think the game did give us a good idea why she wanted the Circle annulled?  I mean, she could not possibly have been ignorant of the number of blood mages roaming the streets of Kirkwall, could she?

Orsino doesn't know that she knows. Orsino just knows that if Meredith gets wind of the plan, she will immediately think Orsino is the mastermind behind, which is also why he himself can't go investigate (at least that is what he claims), he knows that if the Templars were to show up while he was investigating she would call for an annulment right then and there.

Because she was doing a bad job yes. But they are outside the Circle.

As it stands, she wants to purge the Circle because she doesn't know how to control it, because she happens to be an incompetent KC.

The game should show us glimpse then of how Meredith is reasoning and why she is reaching that conclusion. Not expecting a plot twist, it could be for an obvious reason. Which should be shown, and her reaction to it shown, because details like that make character, something that Meredith blatanly lacks.

Well, I'm not so sure about that.

Keep in mind, the mages imported from Starkhaven were all blood mages, too.  They can't be blamed on her doing a bad job.

I admit she doesn't seem to be able to keep her mages actually IN the gallows, though.

I think it is more because the First Enchanter himself was being cross with her, undermining her decissions, and basically not working with her, like he is supposed to.

Or maybe she is not bothering to try to work with him in the first place. She evidently didn't seem to respect him or listen to him. Both are incompetent.

And the Chantry is incompetent for allowing a KC to play at politics.

I always thought Ferelden was the land of idiots, but I'm moderating my view of it after I played DA2.

The problem is that we have lots of great evidence the mages are, well, blood-mages. The Tarhone quest in Act I where you meet Cullen, the Forbidden book quests, the enigma of Kirkwall, etc.

The idol was a bad choice... but I think that was done to show how all of this started with Hawke, but in an ironic sort of way. And keep in mind Meredith sought out the idol, so it may have been some other magic artefact that would have made her go nuts if it wasn't for that.

If you take the same quest from the Templar side (given by Meridith) then she is convinced Orisino is behind everything (even when it isn't) and even when you get proof of who's involved, she still doesn't believe you.  Given that I'd say Orisno's fears about Meridith are extremely well justified.

Too bad Anders didn't have his sense of humour in DA2. I could have seen him and Fenris ribbing each other...

  • Anders: You don't actually think your brooding is sexy, do you?
  • Fenris: Could have sworn that mage was whining again.
  • Anders: "GRR! Let me tell you about my life in one word: 'SLAVERY!"
  • Fenris: "Oh no! Don't send mages to the tower! We're never, ever evil abominations!"
  • Anders: "I'm not only an elf, I'm also an angry emo! Listen to me b!tch!"
  • Fenris: "Oh no, big templar man! What are you going to do with that sword?"
  • Anders: Eww.
  • Fenris: Don't play with lyrium unless you want your heart ripped out, mage.
