I'd say it definitely weakened it. Even though I ended up saving the Circle, I did so with a certain level of uncertainty simply because even though I figured there had to be innocent mages in the Circle, I wasn't sure if Bioware intended that to be the implication. The number of evil mages in the game were so overwhelming that I eventually began to wonder if the point of the story was that Fenris was right and magic was evil. Bethany and Marethari were the only truly good or at least uncorrupted magic users I could think of off the top of my head. Maybe Fenriael? But he was very dangerous to have around regardless.

Anders was the one who sealed the deal for me because even though he was vehemently against blood magic and dealings with demons he proved to be the most destructive of them all even without them. And given the endless hordes of mages who almost randomly turn into abominations throughout the course of the plot I began to wonder if the idea is that "all these mages are supposed to be so weak, desperate or foolish that they idiotically turn to demons for help", which makes them too stupid to be allowed to go free; or that perhaps mages are incapable of defending themselves against demons regardless of their intentions to, which makes them inherently too dangerous to let loose as well.

I remember when I first returned to the Knight-Commander after hunting down those 3 apostates I wanted to tell her that the Templars were being overzealous, but the only option to say that was to yell at her that all the evils the mages committed was entirely her fault. I thought Hawke saying that was so ridiculous that after Fenris echoed my own thoughts and astutely said "You don't think the mages are even a little bit responsible?!" I just had to reload and say something else.

Not sure. I certainly didn't appreciate EVERY mage being a blood mage/abomination hell-bent on killing Hawke and his merry band of misfits. The only "normal" mages I can think of are Hawke himself and Bethany, and Bethany was dominated by an ogre five minutes into the game.

Also since I normally do not play mages, I have to save the circle cause family is more important then anything else.
