I am in the middle of Act 2 right now and I just finally got around to having 200g.  I have been holding off on purchasing items because some of the really good items are 80g+ and special tomes are over 30g.  Am I going to start earning more money at some point or does it not get much better than this?  I feel as though I am not getting all that good of equipment dropped from enemies but at the same time am worried about buying something, then later on in the game I need something but can't afford it.

Any ideas?  Oh and I read that money guide but it didn't really make too huge of a difference and I didn't want to go around equipping people with too many of those runes

There are a few important items that you have to buy during each Act or they are lost forever.

The Black Emporium tomes are available in any act, but there are a few Tomes sold by various merchants (Hubert's Goods, Dalish Merchant) during Act 1 and 2 that disappear if you don't buy them.

Also some of the companion armor upgrades are only available in Act 1 and Act 2.

I've bought the items that disappear after each Act, such as the companion armor and such, but I feel as though I could be buying a few items here and there but I don't want to end up next act wanting to buy a tome or something and not have enough.

The biggest purchase decision for me during Act 2 was whether or not to buy the knockback immunity ring (88 gold) from the Nexus Golem. It is not available anymore in Act 3.

Part of the game, you can't buy everything, will have to decide what you like and want and what you can go without.

If finishing all quests and choosing lucrative options(extortion, demanding pay etc) and packing runes of fortune and selling crap don't get you the money, i'm afraid you are stuck. Runes of fortune really make difference though.

Depending on your style of play during that play-through, I'd say Etched Ring of the Twins and Cold-Blooded are two items to plan for during Act 2.
