From an Origins codex entry:

No traveler to the Fade can fail to spot the Black City.
It is one of the few constants of that ever-changing place. No matter
where one might be, the city is visible. Always far off, for it seems
that the only rule of geography in the Fade is that all points are
equidistant from the Black City.

So, where was the Black City in Dragon Age 2? Ha, it's been bugging me since playing it.

Did Bioware intentionally retcon this bit of lore, or did they just merely forget? Any thoughts on this subject?

To be fair we only went into the fade but like into the head of just one half/human half elf. So there wasn't really much in the way of adventuring further.

You know that Reaper derelict in Mass Effect 2? That was the Black City. Shepard destroyed it.

Equidistant from every non-blackcity point in the fade.

Real answer: You only visit the fade inside a building with walls. You just have to pretend the Black City is beyond those walls.

In the fade for DA2 you are in a specific location. The dreams of basically the rarest and strongest of the mage powers. In that dream everything was perfect. Not just an illusion for one person in it. It was an illusion for everyone. So when you in to see him. He changed how you appeared and sound to match HIS dream. You would not see the Black City because he won't see it. Not in the dream world he created for himself. Granted the Demons trapping him helped to create said dream.

Not seeing the Black City there doesn't make it gone by any means.

Had you walked outside and looked into the sky, you would have seen it. The Black City being visible from any point in the Fade does not mean it can also be seen through walls.

-I- saw the Black City in the fade.

....oh wait. That was just Justice trying on his emo clothes early and striking poses. Nevermind.

It does raise the point again that it would have been nice to get some more varied Fade landscape than just the Templar quarter. But alas it wasn't to be.

I do wonder about the lack of a proper Fadescape and no more quests in there myself.
Was this in response to all those complaints about the Fade sequences in DA:O (the circle tower one in particular)?

The fade is fine, the design for the circle tower (thats the one where you can loop back to the start when you go through a door/passage that "shouldn't" lead there right?) was sadistic.

No I mean the entire sequence that includes that section. People complained all the time about that, I guess because it was rather long.
Yes that bit was a little confusing and mean spirited but eh.

Part of the problem with the DA:O Fade sequences was that the Circle one was mandatory.

Considering fans went as far as to make a mod to skip the Fade sequence in "A Broken Circle," that wouldn't be a bad guess.

I didn't mind the Fade, personally. Then again, my Warden was a mage.

I loathed the fade sequence in the broken circle. too much 'go here, do this, can't get through here? go back to that place, can't do that either? huh. go talk to the ghosty guy here and kill that demon, whats that? another massive door? you didn't get the golem morph power yet? go back to this place....'

I loved all that. Running through evil door mazes, switching forms to get past obstacles, finding all the hidden stat bonuses.

Loading screens irk me. the stat bonuses were nice though, and i have to admit, switching to the flaming guy to avoid dying as the room filled with fire was pretty neato

Trust me, if anyone could fail to spot it, it would be me.  I can get lost just going out for groceries...

But, to answer the question "Where is the Black City?"
It's behind youuuuuu!!!!!

But the "Fade" in DA2 is reused Templar Hall which has central part not covered by the roof.

Except you can't see the sky there (let alone the Black City) since someone had this great idea of filling it with fog that cuts the vision past the second floor or so...

That reconciliation just makes me... discomforted.  It implies that you're not in the Fade when you're in an apparently wall-enclosed space.

The Codex entry was by Enchanter Mirdromel, so apparently he's just not speaking carefully/literally.  Or perhaps he's never been in an inside area in the Fade.

I don't think you mean 'reconciliation.'

It implies that you're not in the Fade when you're in an apparently wall-enclosed space.

No, it doesn't.

It means that something can block your view. If you go outside in the Fade and stick your hands over your eyes, you probably can't see the Black City, but you're still in the Fade.
