So I've been doing Hardcore as a practice session for Insanity, and one of the things I have to wonder is why so many people seem to pick Miranda as a mandatory squad member.

I can understand when someone says "take Kasumi everywhere" since IFB is totally broken, but Miranda?  The cheerleader?

Maybe I'm simply spoiled by three-sniper teams (where Miranda would get herself killed since she'd always be closest to the enemies), but while I understand that Cerberus Officer is an awesome passive to have, it seems to me that aside from that, Miranda has no specialties, per se: she has no CC abilities, her biotics don't have the low cooldowns of Samara or Jack, her weapons are short-ranged and not particularly impressive, and her bonus power seems a bit...meh.
OTOH, given how lethal Insanity can be, her bonuses to health can be a good thing, especially with Cerberus Tactician, her biotics make her more than a glorified Overload bot, she can either open or close a Warp Explosion, and there's always the possibility that I'm just not being imaginative enough with her.  I figure a OSOK Infiltrator wouldn't find her as useful as say, a CQC Infiltrator.
Thoughts?

Honestly for me, as stupid as it may sound I bring her because one she is my romance so I like having her with me all the time. Second I bring her for her biotics even though there are obvious better choices. I also don't play on Hardcore or Insanity so I really don't need that perfect mix of people to be in my party.

She has Overload and Warp AKA Barrier, Shield, and Armor damage. More importantly, her Cerberus Operative ability increases Squad Health and Weapon Damage. That's likely why many people will bring her.

I concur; versatility against any defenses and squad buffs.

She compliments biotic classes very well... provided that she stays alive.

She'd be the perfect squadmate if i could just nail her feet to a mission's starting area. I call her "Derp", Jacob is "Herp". Most biotics lack shield stripping abilities for example. Taking Garrus or Zaeed might remedy that , but Derp also brings the possibility of setting up warp bombs; Via her Warp or Slam. Sentinels are a different kind of story , but essentially the same ; Setting up double warp bombs via quick slams or "recharging" Tech armour.

I find Tech & Combat focused classes less reliant on Miranda. I've gone primarily Grunt /Katsumi on my Infiltrator and i never had a problem.

Good post. Although you can effectively nail her to a spot out of harms way by telling her where to go.

I've rarely seen it work honestly.

It usually starts with [combat hud] sending them directive to go behind crates or something. Then, next thing i know is Miranda taking cover in front of the crates, on the crates or point blank to a YMIR gunning it down . Anywhere thats not even near cover. I frantically try to get her out, same answer; "Moving to position!" , "Going to cover". Then its the ; "taking heavy fire" *Splat* *Dead* routine.

Sometimes i get Katsumi trying to find cover exactly where i am. But i can have her "Shadow strike" away a few sec ,so i'm able to move to an other position and let her majesty get some chest high wall love.

The only way I've found to keep her (Miranda) alive is to kill things fast , or rush ahead , taking the heat myself or having Grunt take point. Grunt doesn't need cover, he is cover.

For adepts and Vanguards she is pure gold. Adepts make use of her overload and warp to strip defenses so they can play. Adepts also use her warp to bomb with pull, since pull has 3 second CD, if you pair with Thane you can usually get multiple warp bombs(up to 3) in a 10 second window, which is total devastation. Vanguards having access to pull gives bombs, or you can take slam on just about any class and do the same. The extra life and damage is also very handy to both Adept and Vanguard.

Infiltrator or Engineer may not need her quite as much but most combat classes would get a nice boost from her passive, and her skills are handy. Unless I am running into a mech heavy mission, aka Garrus loyalty, crashed freighter full of mechs, or pure Geth mission, then she is a staple in my party, and even on those missions it is only because Zaeed and Garrus team up so well with Incisor and squad disruptor ammo.

You can. It's called squad positioning. You should try it sometime.

On topic: Miranda is universally useful on Hardcore and Insanity because she's equipped for every possible situation. Very few other characters can make that claim, if any.

I don't like her but still I bring her for a a lot of missions because of Unstable Warp, Area Overload and the Cerberus Leader squad buffs. And since the Alternate Appearance pack that came with an Armor for her she doesn't look that ridiculous anymore.

I play very aggressively on Insanity so dying squadmates are not an issue. I know the problem though and in the beginning it was totally annoying how often Miranda would try to go on a rampage alone and die instantly but nowadays it's not an issue anymore just because I'm playing so agressively.

On a sidenote: I never take the mentioned Kasumi or one of the Biotics with lower cooldown (Samara, Jack) with me. Very often I roll with Miranda/Mordin, Miranda/Thane, Miranda/Garrus and hardly ever use anybody else anymore. Did use Zaeed and Grunt more often in the past and sometimes bring them for the laughs (because their comments are always badass) or Zaeeds Squad Disruptor.

She has overload and warp as well as a passive squad buff. She is the most versatile squad mate in terms of striping defensives and thats the main thing on hardcore or insanity. She isn’t the best at everything but she covers your basics and can work well with pretty much anyone or on any mission. I personally don’t have issues with her dying.

People  likes "companions" for different reasons. Why to hell I would take Kasumi anywhere, when her attacks are totally unrealistic teleportations?  Exactly, people have different reasons, some people value reality, some just like the looks, some like efficient of combat and so on..

If you want ask opinion of companions, then also tell what you want from them?

One word : Miranda

But more seriously, she is on the the most versatile squad members. Good againts 2/3 of the special protection Shield/Barrier. Also her buffs from Cerberus Operative is pretty good for my Soldier on Insanity :police:.

Miranda has Overload, Warp and Slam, meaning she can break any type of protection in the game, she can cc any non-boss-type enemy in the game, she can setup / finish warp combos AND she buffs squad damage and life...

I dunno... she kinda does EVERYTHING almost, if not as well as anyone else on the team. There are very few occasions taking her isn't a good idea.

EDIT: No, she doesn't tank like Grunt. Miranda needs to stay the back... just like Kasumi, Mordin, Jack, Tali, etc.

Miranda is Soldier Sheps' best friend on the battlefield. 90% of people that pick up and play the game play the Soldier class, Granted not all of them play on on Hardcore/Insanity. Also "she was designed to be perfect".

She's good in any mission. Why NOT take her? Her passive bonus is not very important, but better than any other squadmate's passive skill in the game.

They are actually a reason to NOT take her with you on a mission. She's so annoying and ****ing about everything.
