Miranda brings more to the field than the other choices. That's why I brought her over the others. Especially since Squaddies are mostly useless, outside Kasumi, in Insanity and it all rests on Shepard. Thus I will take all the Health Bonuses I can get, thank you.
Why Miranda?

Update time: took it into my head to use Miranda for nearly mission that didn't involve mass husks.
Been using Miranda and Kasumi alongside my OSOK infiltrator with squad cryo. Talk about absolute overkill: I seriously underestimated the effective range of SMGs, and while I'm still in the habit of favoring IFB over RSS on Kasumi, I'll have to admit that Miranda not only makes an effective defense stripper, but an incredible finisher as well. What I like best is that they're effective at any range, unfailingly freeze nearly everything solid, and since they both use the same weapon loadout, they're fairly interchangeable when I'm leap-frogging my squad towards a push.

^Actually, Miranda and Kasumi can be pretty decent against Husks, even for an Infiltrator. They have SMGs, which the AI can spam Cryo shots with quite decently (the joys of inf. ammo), and Kasumi's IFB is pretty much as close to hassle-free Husk pwnage as you can get. Plus, Miranda's Slam is good in a pinch for those Husks that make it through.
Granted, for your Shep, Miranda+Samara and Kasumi+Mordin might be more optimal on those Husk missions.

Miranda is good, but I don't like her character, so I never use her.
I think Garrus is more than a worthy substitute He has a stronger Overload and higher DPS with his weapons, specially once he learns AP Ammo. Concussive Shot is a versatile power than can make stripping barriers a bit faster and can kill husks instantly when you really have to.
I wouldn't say he is better than Miranda, but he is good and, like Miranda, he's got all bases covered (AP Ammo = Armor, Overload = Shields, Concussive Shot = Barriers).

True, but this ain't a popularity contest. If it was, I'd take Jack everywhere with me.
I like Garrus as well, but as other posters have mentioned, Miranda is very good in an all-around sense, and her passive's no joke.
That, and three sniper teams are entertaining as all hell, but it's harder to positioning your squadmates when you're trying to push. On the other hand, Miranda's nicely short-ranged, so I can always depend on having her close by.

I was reading this thread. I don't understand how anyone could deny Miranda is bar none the best/most versatile squadmate gameplay wise. She does everything and does it as good as anyone. It is a bit ridiculous. Only if you could give her a Mattock or Incisor then she would be unstoppable.
Kasumi/Thane/Samara+Miranda are all you really ever need.

She really stops serving a purpose to me once majority of the squad is available. With any class I can find 2 that I feel optimize my playstyle.
Funny thing is though, if I could only take 2 for the whole game. Miranda would have to be one due to versatility.
Barrier heavy missions = Thane, warp and a sniper. Sniper makes him a much better closer. Samara, Reave and she is a bit of a tank due to it. Rather have her assault rifle. Jack, Warp ammo brings more to the table for me plus she can close with the GPS.
Shield heavy missions = Garrus, Overload, Sniper, and AP rounds = better closer and can strip defenses. Zaeed, Inferno grenade, Disruptor ammo, and sniper. Z can strip and close out enemies. Tali, Drone, Energy drain, and GPS. Tali can strip, distract, close, and she can tank alright with Energy drain.
Armor = Grunt, he can close out enemies, nearly invincible, and Squad Inferno. Garrus, AP and sniper. Jacob, Inferno, lift, closer. Thane, warp and sniper. Samara, Reave and Assault rifle.
Again, Miranda is the most versatile and a definite squad member if I had to only pick two. Since, I can pick from a squad, there are better tools for me to pick from for each mission. I will say this though, if anyone is new to the game. Take her on every mission due to her versatility.

The key word is 'versatility.' In the beginning, a versatile character is great as you're short on everything, but as your options open up, so too do your needs become more specialized.strive wrote...I was reading this thread. As another poster has pointed out, as you progress past Horizon, you pick up more and more specialists, and the missions evolve to fit their mold. These specialists have better weapons, lower biotic/tech cooldowns, and better weapons. Need heavy warp? Thane, then later on Samara's Reave. Need an area overload? Garrus or (God forbid) Kasumi. Once she obtains Energy Drain, Tali could also do the job.
Or you could skip te defense stripping part and just overwhelm them with brute force. For the longest time, I used Thane and Kasumi with my infiltrator (with flashbangs), using our flashbangs to flush out and stun the enemy while we used squad disruptor ammo to lock down their weapons. Thane stood to the back with his insicor, using heavy throws and warps to finish off weakened foes. I later replaced Thane with Zaeed, then proceeded to use his squad disruptor ammo, grenades, and concussive shots. while my infiltrator took the improved cryo route (I didn't notice much of a difference).
Miranda doesn't work for every team. For example, if you want a three-sniper team, she wouldn't fit in too well. Same goes for a team of synthetic killers (which fits the mold of specialized missions), or husk busters (more specialized missions).
