Holy **** this thread is full of racist fail.
To the original poster, yes, a black noble in Ferelden stretches credibility, but not for the reasons other posters have said. Ferelden does have more lenient rules about who becomes a noble than other nations on Thedas, meaning an outsider could become one. However, you discover in your origin your family's history goes back centuries - to before the founding of Ferelden actually. Given nobility generally only marries other nobility, this would mean that a goodly portion of the Arls and Bans would have to have been black for centuries in order to ensure that you end with a "black" family ruling Highever.
There probably are black people somewhere in Thedas - we know at least Riavin in the north is dark skinned, but we hear little about it. However, the attitude towards human racial differences in Ferelden seems similar to premodern Europe - black people are so rare there is generally speaking no racism towards them. This cuts both ways though - since they have no stigma, and finding a mate from home is difficult, they intermarry and totally blend into the population within a generation. Keep in mind a stiff color line between Black and White is *only* a U.S. invention. In Europe, everyone "white" has between 1.5% and 10% black blood now for the very reasons outlined above. So in Thedas you surely could expect to meet the occasional black trader or sailor, and maybe their mixed-race child, but you shouldn't expect to see an ongoing resident black population.
As an aside, this is also the reason why the continued existence of black people in the Fallout series struck me as weird. After a nuclear war most everyone would die, particularly in cities. Those people who were left wouldn't be too picky about who they settled down with. Hence, I'd expect everyone in the U.S. outside of the South to range from white to light brown.
But you do have one big argument in your defense. If Bioware really wanted to keep it realistic, they wouldn't have allowed female PCs either - or would have forced female PCs to dress as men or something. No sexism at all exists in Ferelden (although it does among the Qunari) precisely because they decided making the game fun for people who wanted to play women was more important than realism. Thus, I conclude they should include black people, even if it seems really silly.
