I think one of the reviewers already pointed this out. I think they just decided it was a lot of effort to morph all the familly to look like your character.

They allow you to roll black toons then your family [which by all indications are blood family] should match the palette ie Fallout 3.

What the hell is a toon?  Is this some newfangled word for PC?

A toon is a well established word for the fictional characters you create in games... beacme big in the WoW scene.  Toon = Cartoon = Your character

Well done, caught me in a typo.  I guess with your caucasian physiology you're used to focusing on minutia.  But seriously, arent you late for your Klan meeting?

A penis joke! How quaint. And whats this? Accusing someone who disagrees with you of being racist! What an original and totally unprecedented idea!

You sir are truly a shining example of your lineage. I'm sure your parents are very proud.

His dad is more than likely in jail and his mom is probably a crackhead. It's a shame really. I'll be sure to donate a turkey so people like him can eat on Thanksgiving. such a shame.

I thought it was a little jarring too when I rolled a dark skinned dwarf (which, I suppose in retrospect doesn't really make much sense, being cave dwelling folk and all) to have a family, who with the exception of height have all rather Nordic features.

And while I can only speak for myself, it's not so much a political correctness issue as it is an immersion issue. As for the "why would there be foreign nobles?" question, there's plenty of ways to answer that, one such reason is married to Arl Eamon. Granted, she's white but the point still stands. Not to mention they could be or be descended from political refugees or be like Loghain and be a commoner who was raised up to Noble status for outstanding service.

For the sake of immersion, I feel like it would have made more sense to either pull Fallot 3's magic palette-swapping family or limit the aesthetic choices based on Origin story. Though I'm sure people would find something to complain about in there too, wouldn't they?

And just for the sake of argument, what's REALLY annoying is that the American-accented dwarves use 'curses' more commonly found in the Great Britain sort of area, and use them rather poorly. It's why I can't use Oghren in my party.

And just for the sake of argument again, the Qunari aren't "the black guys", they're a wholly separate species, like elves and dwarves are.

Some of you sloondorfs have gone so far off base that you know you need to be slapped.  Forget race cards, medievel Europe and Wesley Snipes... nothing to do with the original issue.  Issue is simple... Noble Family should match your toon.  Funny how they make allowances for the sex of your character but not the ethnicity.  Not suggesting that this is a racist motivation, I DO NOT think it is...  Just saying it is not consistant.

Funny part of all of this is that none of you that are making racial jokes would have the ball sac to do it if you were not hiding behind internet anonymity.  Get off of the race cards and poor taste jokes and see the big picture, the shoes don't match is all.

Percentage of Ferelden that is female ~50%. Percentage that is black....

Sexual equality was likely a forced issue in ferelden. You just try telling that physics bending mage who can kill you with a snap of her fingers that she has to be subservient to men because she has an extra X-Chromosome.

However since there are no black people in Ferelden....

Also I love it when someone accuses someone else of being an internet tough guy, and then proceeds to threaten them OVER THE INTERNET.

Ignoring your BS on sexual equality...  I never threatened anyone, I said that they needed to be slapped.... That's an idiom, take 5 and look it up if you need to.  I never said that I would be the slapper, I have no need to threaten anyone, the only people that need fear me are the ones that put their hands on me or try to invade my home.  My state has very clear laws on the use of force in defense of life or invasion of property.

I take no interest in threatening 16 y/o's with violent based on childish statements and violations of the forum's usage agreements.  Don't be surprised if you end up banned, after all you were definitely in poor taste today even if you were just being sarcastic.  I enjoy intelligent debate, but intelligent is the key word.

But this isn't a cartoony game!  You're playing the PC - the Player Character dagnabbit!  This is an CRPG, not an MMO.  :(

Implied threat bolded for easier reading by the curiously ignorant.

First, I don't think i've said anything ban worthy. I've poked fun constantly at the apparent african american outrage in this thread over electronic parentage in a video game with an established lore. A lore which they want changed to suit them because they are black and they say so. However I've yet to stoop to "fried chicken and watermelon" style racist jokes, mostly because they are unnecessary and stupid. I think i'm well within my forum rights to call a spade a spade though, and this whole topic was stupid and pointless from the beginning, so calling it that and poking fun at those who take it seriously I don't think is ban worthy. Could be wrong though, who knows, who cares.

Second, if you really enjoy an intelligent debate, dismissing anyone who disagrees with you as a 16 y/o bigot internet tough guy is going to make finding that debate pretty difficult.

It never really was? From the very beginning it was a flame war where one side insisted that changing the pallete arbitrarily would be stupid and break lore, and that the lore shouldn't have to be re-written because a few players don't like how it reads, and the other side insisted that anyone who didn't agree that it should be changed was a racist (and occaisionally perverted the points of the first side, neglecting logic, and tried to turn them around).

Let the developers write their story and their world the way they want to. If the Couslands are a white noble family in a country full of white europeans why should they have to change that because you want to play a dark skinned character?

EDIT: Oh I admit i'm trolling on some level. I'm fully serious that I think this whole discussion is pointless and stupid, and that bending lore to suit people rolling fictional characters in a fictional game is absolutley retarded. However most of the obviously flamewar type stuff i've said was just to poke at people still insisting their absurd opinion is valid.

Okay ON TOPIC (vaguely, at least)...

I'm Chinese, so naturally I created my character as a vaguely oriental looking one (not the easiest thing to do in this game, it did take some time, lawl), the first origin I chose was the human noble one, only to find that my whole family, and their servants, were all white. And to be honest, I couldn't actually care less. Not game breaking by any means or anything. In fact, I might even be more baffled if my family WAS Asian. A family which had been in place ages back past the reclamation of Ferelden, had somehow developed unusual facial features and skin tone like some sort of freak mutation. Don't get me wrong though, I have no problem with the TC wanting matching skin tones for his family, but I'd rather Bioware spent time on other things.

tl;dr: User mods - If you want, go for it. Bioware to fix it - no, don't waste time and resources that could be better spent on things that are, imo, much more important.

On a side note, for the lack of black/asian people in the game, the elves, dwarves and chasind are supposed to represent the 'minorities' in today's society, imo. You know, Social Commentary and all that. In fact, Bioware could actually be called out on more if they replaced those races with blacks/asians. It's just a more subtle way of commenting.

OK, seriously. I'm disappointed when I see people demanding satisfaction of their real life issues. Yes, it might be a technical imperfection that Origin parents are not automatically accommodated to the character a player creates. However, does anyone seriously wishes BioWare to spend their resources on something so circumstantial instead of developing another DLC in the form of a quest, for instance?

Is it really so important to anyone to have DA:O moved closer to Sims? Yeah, having dissimilarity between parents and children is so unrealistic but no NPC has any physical urges in DA:O, so it can be questioned whether reproduction in Thedas works the same way as here. Perhaps it is really a stork who brings children and perhaps it is white goods delivery only. Who knows?

See, this is what I call a rational approach to gaming. An asian, plays an asian (looking) character, sees his family is white but understands the game has a lore all its own, and DOESN"T make a thread complaining about it. Those of you on the other side of this issue could learn alot here. (But probably wont since playing the victim in some vague white conspiracy is more fun and gets you more stuff)

Perhaps the level of complaining is irrational, but it would have been a nice touch had a simple palette-swap been included. It's not really a game-breaker, just kind of weird that they give you a wide variety of skin tones, but if you're not white then there's nobody else like you... but you still have to identify as a native ferelden in game. I just kept it in mind when rolling the rest of my characters, like you said: it's not a big deal.

yes it was possible but they got lazy. to the people saying this game is Europe... it isn't... its a fantasy non existent world. it would have been easy to implement what the tc is asking. for the origin atleast
