I made a model-type VFX, similar to the giant boulder throwing one. I used the ship model and placed it on a commoner and set it to walking waypoints. It gives the illusion of a moving ship.
The effect can also be applied to the PC. I think it would be most useful on OLM to give the appearance of over-water travel.
This works best with the total invisibility vfx I made, which hides the creature that the ship is on, while still allowing the creature to walk waypoints, or, if it's the PC, become a ship which the PC can then control. There will be issues with water depth and builders will have to match depth of water with height of VFX, but it is easy to make multiple VFX with the editor and simply modify the height. I uploaded the VFX with a proof of concept module. Search for Matt's Moving Ships on the vault.
Hope you find it useful.

The VFX editor is a vastly underused portion of the game. It allows for a great deal of creative, interesting ideas to come to light. I don't have ships in my mod--swamps are too gross--but I am glad you released this!

It looks really cool. The problem is that there is only one ship model that points the right direction. For some reason all the other ship models, even the rowboat, point backwards when you attach it to an object for an animation. I was thinking about asking Hellfire if there is an easy way to simply change the orientation of the model.

There's a tool that lets you flip MDBs and manage other sorts of modifcations. Here's the link: http://nwvault.ign.c...ols.Detail&id=4

Yes, this has been done before.
Realms of Ultima Overland Map Land and Sea Travel System
There are already models for a number of ship types in there. One thing to keep in mind with using VFX attachments for ships on an overland map is that the collision sphere is only as big as the creature to which the VFX is attached. Hence, if you have multiple ships on the map they could end up passing right through each other.
