Well, what exactly is the issue you're having? I can't make heads or tales of the dxdiag info, but maybe the issue is something someone can help with without the wall of text.

LOL, would like to help, but you really didn't say what problem you have, and I don't feel like trying to wade through the wall of text to try and figure out, so some details would help on what is happening. I probably will not be able to help, but I am betting the others need the same info, and maybe I will get lucky and be able to help. Details now, as in what is your comp doing to you in non-super high tech language.

The problem is that no matter what I do I can't get the option to become available. It shows I have DirectX 11 ,but the Very High is greyed out.

It sounds like your video card doesn't actually support DirectX 11. Chances are, you're using a DirectX 10 card, but there is no DirectX 10 option, so it uses DirectX 11 but just turns off certain features and functions, so you can only run it on High, which is the max for DirectX10.

Out of curiosity, did you install the HD textures pack, isn't it? to enable the very high settings.

And seeing your post, you have an NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, and as far as I know, only the nvidia cards starting with the GTX 460 are able to run it.

You don't need the high-res textures to be able to run on Very High, but you DO need to be able to run Very High in order to actually use the High-Res textures.

And there's the issue right there, GTS 250 - not a DirectX 11 card.  Sorry :(

This is correct.  A GTS 250 only runs DX10.  And with an Athlon X2 3800+, you're barely above minimun for CPU power anyway.  I think you'll get pretty good performance with the high res texture pack, Medium graphics,  and maybe (just maybe) a little bit of AA.  In other words, don't sweat it and enjoy the game.

EDIT:  Using DX9, of course.

Yep I sure did install the patch. In addition I am pretty sure that my card is doing a deal where when I install the latest patch update for the Video Driver it shows a 250 card but that isn't the card. I saw where someone had this type of issue. I am not sure I do not want to open my pc up to get the right info on the card. ARGH. This is very frustrating because I just bought my card like 6 months ago or less.

Either way, if the game is coming up with the Very High option grayed out, then it is not a DirectX 11 card... it's that simple. What you can do is install the latest beta driver from Nvidia and see if that works, but I highly doubt it will.

You can also try installing another version of the drivers and see if it changes the name of the graphics card, but I've never heard of an issue like that before.

I would be very surprised if that was the case.  The GTS 250 is a decent card... one of Nvidia's discount gaming cards, essentially.  But none of the 200 series will run DX11. Again, even if you had a newer or more powerful card, your CPU is going to be the limiting factor.

I've done only one playthrough of DA2 so far, and I did it on DX9 w/ medium graphics using the high res texture pack.  It looked good, except for some odd shadows once in a while.

Ok I follow you on that but I have Nvidia 3D Software in addition. If you are right my question confusion is this. I play WOW which who doesn't. In order to play it with 3D after Cataclysm you had to put in a switch command to make it go 3D. Isn't it somehow possible that the same problem happens here? DA 2 clearly shows me that I am running DX 11? Just asking folks?

Then you say that your card is NOT a 250? it must be the card (at least that's what your dxdiag info says) ...well, if you don't have the box or instructions of your video card you'll have to open up your PC and tell us. It's very strange that windows don't recognize your vid card well.

No if you google around you will come across a post where someone mentions their card is showing a 250 or 260. I know this is strange ,but I have seen it happen with my card. Somehow Nvidia has an issue probably because they use a universal install program and most people ,.because the graphics work never notice it. When you install it somehow mistakes the card for a 250 / 260 card when it is a different one. SIGH Bottom line is I gotta fork out some cash because I am tech geek / guru who can't stand it when something doesn't work.

Where exactly does DA2 show you this?  As others have stated, in the game, on the video options screen, you can select DX11 if you have a DX10 card.  This will allow you to use the graphic enhancements for DX10, which is the "High" graphic setting in the game.  If you have a 200 series card, and you can't access "Very High" in game... then you're using DX10.

Windows 7 comes with native support for DX11, in addition to running DX9.  So when you do a dxdiag, it shows up as DX11.

I'd also be cautious about comparing the Dragon Age series to other games... DAO and DA2 use their own game engine.  No other game to date uses it.

Did you try a different driver set?  I'd mentioned to try the beta drivers (there's a link somewhere on this site).  Perhaps those will fix your issues.

here's the deal, listen carefully because I see people complaining about the same thing over and over about any game that supports DX11:
windows 7, by default, has the dx11 package.

****your video card does NOT support dx 11, only dx10... the entire 200 series only supports dx10***

therefore, both the game and your windows will show you have dx11 (which you do) but your hardware (GPU) does not support it. end of story. you can only use dx10 and under.

on that note, DX11 is a joke anyways, minimal enhancements - most all games are still built on dx9 with dx10-11 "features" anyhow. Bottom line: you won't notice a difference.

You're a little late to the party, buddy and you totally didn't read the other posts, to boot. He says he has an issue with the drivers thinking his video card is something it's not... which I've never heard of the issue, but he insists that it's real so I suggested other drivers and haven't gotten a response yet.

Also, you totally felt the need to get your 2¢ in just to say something that was already said, multiple times might I add! So, in retrospect, your comment is useless and degrading.

@OP, did you try different drivers yet to see if it recognizes your video card correctly? I'm still fairly certain that whatever card you have, it does not support DX11. If you want a suggestion for a video card, shoot me a PM with your price range and I'll set ya straight :)

If I'm understanding your post correctly, your problem is this:

You have an nvidia card which is something other than a 2xx series card.  However, the drivers, windows, etc are showing that you DO have a 2xx series card.  Correct?

What series of card do you have in your system if not a 2xx series card?  You have not provided this information that I have seen so it makes it very difficult for anyone to say if your card does indeed support DirectX features or not.   You say you are well versed in PCs so I'm going to assume you are 100% certain the card you believe to have in your system is capable of directX 11.

Going with that assumption then your problem could be one that I ran into once years ago, and it's rare, and boggling when it happens, but...

It is possible that your Video Card has either been (1) Loaded with the wrong bios, or (2)  You are the subject of retail theft and replacement.  This is where someone purchases a lesser and greater model card, swaps the bodies and returns the lesser model as the greater model (thus gitting the better model at the price of the cheaper one).   I have been the victom of this once when purchasing from a retail store.

My suggestion is that if you are CERTAIN your card supports DX11 and is a model OTHER than the one showing up in windows is to call the company which makes your card and explain to them the problem your having.  They can get you the needed bios if it is all that is needed or they MAY be able to RMA you are a new card if something physical with the card is wrong.

If you were a tech Guru you'd know that your card is not DX11 and therefore cannot use "very high" in Dragon Age 2 which is reserved for DX11 cards. And if the card is not the one that wall of text says it is then what is your card exactly? You have yet to actually say. If i knew what your card is and if it's displaying wrong i could probably tell you what to do but your incoherent rambling is getting me nowhere.

Wait a second.  You claim to be CompTIA A+ certified and "don't want to open up your PC to check what card you bought"???!!!  I have a hard time believing this.  I manage a team of data center engineers, most of them gamers, all of them "geeks" and every single one can tell you the components in their PCs at home.  How can you NOT know what card you have as a PC gamer with self professed understanding enough to get a basic PC hardware cert?

Pop the freaking hood on that thing and look at your card, man!  It takes 30 seconds!  Then use some of the PC  troubleshooting skills you would have had to learn when studying for that test!;)
