A question for SuicidalBaby: Conventional wisdom says that having Enemy: Rank is X as the second in a pair of conditions does not cause the AI to switch targets and ignore the first condition (so long as it is true on any enemy). How confident of this are you? I was playing earlier today, and saw it happening several times. I was playing a force mage, and wanted Merrill to cast Misdirection Hex on elites once I got around to attacking them myself (i.e. not until the gravitic ring I trapped them in wore off). I used the following tactics:

Enemy: Target of Hawke > Use current condition for next target
Enemy: Rank is Elite or Higher > Misdirection Hex

Based on Merrill's behaviour, the first condition didn't seem to be used at all. It could have defaulted to true when Hawke didn't have a current target, but even if I made sure both Hawke did have a target and explicitly ordered Merrill to attack it as well, she didn't wait for the enemy to die before re-targeting to try to hex the elite again. Am I missing something incredibly obvious in my tactics? I suppose it could be a version difference (PC v1.02).

latest patch was suppose to have solved this issue of both tactics working separately when the second tactic involved the use of enemy rank as a condition. What could be perceived is the condition of "enemy: target of Hawke" does not work as we assume when not associated with a direct action. That tactic set can be read as,
Target of Hawke: action; or....
Hawke has target? if yes, check for visable elite.
elite visable? if yes, use Misdirection Hex."

The target condition could have 2 separate checks, allowing the second condition its former, "any" freedom.

It is because I am not 100% sure that I treat each tactic as if is entirely independent most of the time. Leaving it to the player and well placed tactics to create the ideal situation in which to act. Some tactics are just destined to not work as 'we' want.

A great job here, I'm learning a lot. And to think that I thought I had a reasonable understanding of tactics.

This is especially useful because I'm using a couple of AreleX's builds that you've revamped here. Is there any chance you're going to look at the Glass Cannon team, from his Elemental Force/Blood Mage? :D

Thank you for the kind words. I might attempt to look at the last group, but to be honest, these 3 groups burnt me a little. The process of understanding the synergy of 3 entirely different group's mechanics someone else designed in order to improve the entire lot of builds and tactics is extremely daunting. Especially when I have yet to finish the game with anything other than as a PC mage. It took its toll. I am basically mentally exhausted right now. It will be a while till I even play DA2 or any game at this point.

note: I have played a PC rogue to the start of act 3.

The stamina potion/lyrium potion tactic should always be below your activated abilities/spells tactics, unless you are absolutely sure that at any given time your least 'expensive' ability/spell in your tactics costs 10% or more of your pool.

This thread is awesome!! I can't believe that I've only just took a look at it (though I only picked up the game a week or two ago, I was reading the forums before that)

Learning a great deal which should help me setup my own tactics when I come to experimenting stuff! Good job :)

Great guide! Just a small question:

SuicidialBaby wrote...

Lesson : #5 ....

Tactics :

1. self: hp: <25%: use: Health Poultice
2. enemy: target of Hawke: use current condition for next tactic
3. enemy: elite or higher: Brand
4. enemy: attacking Varric: use current condition for next tactic
5. Anders: any: Back-to-Back
6. Anders: being attacked by a melee attack: Armistice
7. self: being attacked by melee attack: Armitice
8. enemy: attacking Anders: Kickback
9. enemy: elite or higher: Pinning Shot
10. enemy: target of Hawke: Rhyming Triplet
11. self: stamina: <50%: activate: Speed
12. Anders: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack: jump to tactic 16
13. Merrill: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack: use current condition for next tactic
14. Hawke: any: Goad ----- *actual jump destination*
15. self: any: activate: Bianca's Song
16. self: stamina: <10%: use: Stamina Draught
17. enemy: target of Hawke: Attack
18. self: at least 1 enemy alive: skip tactics
19. self: any: deactivate: Speed

.....

Shouldn't this be jump to tactic 15? If the n-1 jump rule is correct and you wanna jump to 14. Or i am missing something?:P

Anders

Build :

Respec asap
1. Heal
2. Chain Lightning
3. Rock Armor
4. Stonefist
5. Heroic Aura
6. Chain Reaction
7. Haste
8. Valiant Aura
.
.
.

Minor bug; Haste requires 3 points in creation to learn it.

Btw, how much thought do you put in these tactics you write? They're really optimally made - simple, yet effective. And the companions are still keeping up with the battle, not lagging behind. Sometimes they even seem a step ahead, hehe xD . Specially important for fragile classes. You've no idea how many nerves you saved me.

bro, my nerves have been through the meat grinder enough for all of us. My first playthrough was NM as well as every run since. So all these tweaks have resulted from reloads. I swear Ive had an actual coniption fit at some point.

checking build....

edit: flipped Valiant and Haste

note:personally, I think this build is a little over kill with the greater heal, I would take the Glyph set sooner instead

Got a question, from lession 4. I used this with my level 20 warrior and when I fought long battles ( the Dragon in Act III ) Anders would die often. I notice that there is no self healing in the tactics ( or Health potion ). What I had to do was defend him all the time in addition to repositioning him during the battle. Should there be a self heal in there somewhere?

Anders Build :

Respec asap
1. Chain Lightning
2. Rock Armor
3. Chain Reaction
4. Heal
5. Greater Heal
6. Heroic Aura
7. Valiant Aura
8. Glyph of Paralysis
9. Glyph of Binding
10. Haste
11. Great Haste
12. Panacea
13. Aid Allies
14. Regroup - Vengeance acquired during Dissent
15. Martyr
16. Swift Justice
17. Blood of my Enemy
18. Wrath
+19. Direct Damage or Walking Bomb set

Tactics :

1. self: hp: <50%: deactivate: Vengeance
2. ally: hp <50%: Heal
3. ally: hp: <50%: jump to tactic 16
4. self: any: deactivate: Panacea
5. enemy: STAGGERED: Chain Lightning
6. self: at least 1 enemy is alive: Haste
7. enemy: clustered with 2 enemies: Glyph of Paralysis
8. self: mana <75%: activate: Heroic Aura
9. self: hp: >75%: activate: Vengeance
10. self: mana: >50%: skip tactics
11. self: hp: >75%: Martyr
12. self: mana: <10%: use Lyrium Poultice
13. enemy: target of Hawke: Attack
14. self: any: skip tactics
15. self: any: deactivate: Vengeance - *actual jump destination*
16. self: any: deactivate: Heroic Aura
17. ally: hp: <50%: activate: Panacea
18. ally: status: dead: Regroup
19. ally: hp: <50%: Aid Allies

Ally works for self also.

Oh, also, the special bosses might require a bit more specific tactics. I just did the high dragon with a DW rogue and I did use a handful of homemade potions and some character switching. In retrospect, maybe it would have been a good idea to do that quest where Anders gets a rune slot first for some fire resist.
On the other hand I did the Xenebeck fight without going out of the room with the posted tactics (just disabled a few) and no character switching.

Thanks, I did not realize that about ally. I also am thinking I should wait until I have an armor rune slot for anders before trying that fight. But I did it to get the +7 attributes rune. I'm going to retry with some homemade potions ( I understand they have their own cooldown ).

I may have missed it but how can I stop Merrill and Anders firing off Chain Reaction at the same time as each other or at the same time as me? I have 3 chain reactions in the group, including myself. I considered using Target of Hawk as a condition for one of them, but that would still have us double firing if I'm also about to cast it. I'm on the 360 so I have to be ultra-creative due to reduced tactic slots.

Other then completly disabling it in the tactics and manually activate it,maybee nothing.
Or place the condition (staggered-< chain lightning) for anders at the bottom and that for merill at the beginning of the tactic set.

changing priorty, as suggested, would be the best solution.

how many tactics do you get on xbox?

Tactics up to 20. The problem on Xbox is only 6 activated ability spots ( x y b and those same three with right trigger pulled ). Once you level up enough you have to use power wheel to get to them. Thanks for your help.

yeah , same thing on ps3, which is why everything is explained, built, and designed the way it is.
manual activation of sustains most of the time will buy tactic slots.

I would not suggest 3 primal mages in the same group because of the issue presented. I would suggest Hawke should be switch to elemental for balance.

SuicidalBaby - in your 'Alternate Build #1" in your NM Blood Magic Compendium you have Fenris, Varric/Sebastian and Anders as the companions, and you refer to Arelex's Elemental Force/Blood Mage guide for companion builds and tactics. However, Arelex's guide doesn't have a build or tactics for Fenris, and I noticed that in your Advanced Tactics thread you didn't post a build/tactics for Fenris when you updated Arelex's other builds and tactics for his mage guide.

Is there any chance of you developing and posting tactics for Fenris to use with your 'Alternate Build #1' in the Compendium? I would love to use Fenris because I've done 5 runs without using him (3 on hard, 2 on NM) and would really welcome a little variety. Thanks infinitely in advance should you choose to help out with this! :)
