I love how the combat-wise gameplay will be improved
As with the AI interaction for players. I think that having the down button on the D-pad should not only bring friendly AI to your location, but also make it a priority to create tactical defensive maneuvers to flank enemies in hiding or to camp in a strategically advantageous spot to gain protection and the position to create offensive fluctuations in the heat of battle. ME 3 is going to be a war-zone, not the typical covert and small skirmish/ 40sec battles. The gameplay will require that every trick in the book of combat be utilized to survive. It's fate that this game will require us to be on our toes and use new moves to navigate, and to be able to be fluid is to be evolving the battlefield into more than just gun-fire. Your squad should be able to tactfully push on the offensive with a simple press of the up button, flank your foes, provide protection whenever your shields are down and when health is low, melee a close proximity enemy *Notably how Grunt does the Krogan Charge melee attack, and alert your squad of the enemy positions, attack styles, and strategies. There are many things that can be be done for this upcoming epic conclusion in terms of combat gameplay, we'll just have to hope and see what kind of implementations there will be to stack up to the hype and expectations of ME 3.
As for the squad-mates themselves. I haven't played ME 1 before (shame on me :[ ) but like some others who said so here, I'd like to see more personal interaction between Shepard and his team. Personally for me, a true commander/leader interaction with his squad entitles that even in desperate situations, there still can be plenty of great pleasures to be done. I'd like squad members to be able to dance along and drink with Shepard whenever he goes to the Citadel or clubs. I'd like all permanent squad mates to comment on things, places, or people that they interact with alongside Shepard. The RPG element that made this trilogy as big as can be should be fully generated to exemplify the importance of being a present team member. I'd be pleased to hear if you guys would agree that not only Shepard has an opinion on topics that he discusses with the various people that he meets.
For the permanent squad setup, here's my list of the most likely returning team members (some of which has been mentioned already):
1) Garrus - If he was a squad member in ME 1&2, why not ME 3 as well?
2) Kaidan or Ashley - They were huge characters in #1 and only cameos in #2. ME 3 should bring them back in full circle as huge characters in this epic conclusion.
3) Liara T'Soni (Samara will be replaced by Liara. See below the list for a reason)
4) Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy - Same reason as Garrus and also, she is permanently apart of the Normandy crew hence "Vas Normandy"
5) Grunt (not Wrex. See below the list for a reason)
6) Mordin Solus - Has nowhere else to go and is bent on stopping the Reapers
7) Miranda Lawson - If you brought her along to fight the Human-Reaper in the Suicide Mission, she will resign from Cerberus if you decided to destroy the Collector Base. Logically she wants to stop the Reaper threat alongside Shepard as well.
8) Jacob Taylor - Same reason as Miranda
9) Legion - Wants to fight the Reapers because Legion sees the Reapers as a threat to his fellow geth and to everyone in the galaxy
10) James Sanders - The Gameinformer magazine confirmed so. I'm not sure why he's on the squad.. maybe he's a die-hard fan of Commander Shepard and runs into him while the Commander is escaping Earth.
*Liara replaces Samara due to the possibility of why she would temporarily leave being the Shadow Broker for being in the spotlight with Shepard. I suppose her "final" orders to her operatives are to "destroy the Reapers when they finally arrive and maybe that's how she has the leeway to be on Shepard's team." Also, Samara's obligation to Shepard's Code has ended after destroying the Collectors. She's free to go wherever she pleases. Maybe she returns to Ilium or Omega to stop crime there. If you traveled around Omega with Samara and talked with her, she mentions that due to the high crime rate, she wants to return to Omega after the mission. She may be at Omega to help you win over the trust of Aria T'Loak when you try to recruit her as a supporter to fight against the Reapers (that's one of the main objectives in ME 3, to recruit major groups and civilizations to fight against the Reapers)
*Grunt replaces Wrex because Wrex has an obligation to form union with all of the Krogan and because of the fact that Shepard is Grunt's battle-master. Wrex will be on Tuchanka to be persuaded to help fight the Reapers. With Shepard's history with Wrex, I believe that recruiting them to the galactic cause is going to be pretty easy.
Generally, I think that the list above is the squad that'll be accompanying us on our latest adventure. Hopefully Bioware can implement some outstanding gameplay that tops their previous outstanding implementations in the ME universe
