My biggest complaint (artistically) about DA2 and why it felt unfinished/rushed...

We never actually saw an opening shot of approaching Kirkwall and its famously dangerous and narrow cliff-lined harbor.

The SCALE hinted at in the concept art had me literally aching to install the game and look up those massive cliffwalls from sea level.  To feel the despair of the gigantic chains stretching impossibly high above and the huge Argonath-like slave statues covering their faces down towards your puny ship.  To wonder at the city itself nestled in among those cliffs and the presumably INCREDIBLE architecture and craftsmanship it would have taken to build (without even considering any of the additional lore we got about the magical foundations of the city).

THAT was what I couldn't wait to see from the artists of DA2.  And I'm not just talking about cutscenes.  I wanted to explore these places.  That crap view from Darktown was not nearly enough.

I wanted to TRAVEL from the city gates to the Wounded Coast.  Actually walk there, not be teleported there from my mansion.  I wanted to have to find my way from Kirkwall to the lowest trails of Sundermount and THEN come upon the Dalish Camp itself.  I wanted the Deep Roads expedition to actually feel like a journey to someplace that wasn't directly outside the city so we could see what the Free Marches actually looked like in comparison.  (I realize these are actually more of a gameplay argument - but I know it all tied in when it came to release dates and such)

I wanted all these lengthier transitions to areas because I WANTED TO SEE THE ARTWORK of this world.   BW has given us such amazing backstory for this world.  Let us SEE it!  At least more of it.

I dunno, maybe my problem is that's just not the type of design this game, and even Origins was based on.  The whole "tile" concept of worldbuilding has left a bad taste in my mouth ever since Neverwinter Nights, to be honest.  And BW is so damn good at telling the stories and progressing the gameplay.

It's not like I didn't enjoy the game, I did.  On my 2nd playthru now.  The combat is great and that's really what the core of the game is all about anyway.  But I've always likened BW's games to reading a good book and with DA2, I feel like I've missed some important opening chapters.  I feel like I'm only getting a taste of what could be a truly inspiring work.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I still have a compiled jpeg of all 6 mapviews of Baldur's Gate as a desktop.

I just miss the artwork...

Oh man. If some of the artwork had been implemented correctly.

There's this one concept art piece of a bunch of refugees living in thatch huts, desperation screaming at the viewer. There were people gathering around fires, dirty clothing, and dogs everywhere. It was like a wave of refugee squatters had taken up residence in Lowtown.

...you know, like you'd assume instead of the clean unchanging streets of Lowtown we see in the game. The same streets populated with those unfinished weird faced bland people.

Just a little more time to polish, man. Just more time and this game could have been one of the greats.

I could write a book about the stuff in this game that holds so much promise and seems like such a great idea, then gets wiped out by poor execution and rushed development.

Man, that sounds amazing. That's one thing I definitely would've liked to see in the game...Kirkwall is a great setting, and it's a shame that we couldn't see more of it (particularly since we were confined to it for most of the game).

My biggest art complaint were the darkspawn and elf redesigns.
