So keeping the base is a BAD idea now?

Hey, I like quarians too, but the alien mistress on the side is something I prefer to keep out of the public eye, you know?
You have to stay focused on the big picture.

The Collector base was made by the Reapers. Their creations have this trend to indoctrinate people. It's a fair assumption, even there's no evidence pointing it in either directions.Saphra Deden wrote...
Nothing says Shepard isn't secretly a huge fan of Hello Kitty but it would be foolish to assume he is without any actual indication of such.

Man, I hope not. If that's the route they're taking, I'll be the first to never buy another BW game ever again.
Come on. The story ALWAYS was going to end on a heroic note.

The materials to create an indoctrination device probably exist within the base, but that's a reason to study it, not destroy it.
The Collector base was operated by mindless beings who had no need to be indoctrinated because they were infested with implanted Reaper tech. Had there been some kind of indoctrination field present we'd have seen its effects on the crew and colonists.
Regardless, there are ways around indoctrination. We can study it remotely with mechs or shift people in and out on a regular basis to limit exposure.
The point is, we need to study indoctrination. This is critical to our survival. At some point you need to swallow your fear and bite the bullet because when the Reapers are invading they will be using all of this scary **** against you.

How is this meaningful when you want to annihilate the other species of the galaxy if you're losing to spite them?I think it's all pointless anyway, but I'd rather risk Cerberus finding something useful than just blowing up the base to spite TIM and satisfy my ego.

You know what the fun part is? We already have. With Object Rho.
Bomarding the mind with infrasounds is a part of the indoctrination process.

Didn't read the article, just the Retribution novel to see, destroying the base was right. And the fear from indoctrination is anything but "irrational fear and mumbo-jumbo". Sovereign or the derilict reaper proved that already, and all the other reaper artifact you encounter in the games. The last one, the Object Rho was just the last example that one cannot be careful enough.
Playing with them, is like playing with toxic materials without any precautions, or safety equipment becouse "oh, its just irrational fear from the unknown".
And no. There are no known safety measures or precautions against reaper stuff. As it was proven.

I don't follow. Where in Arrival do we get any indication that they were studying indoctrination?

It is nothing like playing with toxic material. We understand what toxic material is, and how it works, and if we take the proper precautions we can play with it all we want. We can get to that level with Reaper tech, as long as it isn't Space Magic.
Also, 3 Reaper objects, 2 of which were being investigated either by ignoramuses or mouthbreathing retards, do not a proof make.

Another broadcast is infrasound, consistent with frequencies that trigger feelings of awe and fear in humans, a known factor in Reaper indoctrination. Kenson's laboratory is filled with equipment dedicated to monitoring any signal coming from the artifact in the hopes that some clue will prove the Reapers' undoing before it's too late.

Taking this to the most illogical extreme, if The Illusive Man asked Shepard to bring him a crate full of live facehugger eggs, would you do it? Would you complain if it had negative consequences?
I don't know why I have to keep repeating this, but the keep base/destroy base should be kept seperate from the Cerberus monopoly on base / not Cerberus monopoly on base discussion. You cannot assume at the time of the base decision that you must let only Cerberus have the base technology.

Indeed. Or what if Tim said "Ok, I need a million people to feed into this vat to make us a controll-able human reaper. I am 100% sure we will end up with a controllable human mini-reaper."
Would you murder a million people, just to get a cool weapon? I know we're talking logical extremes here, but I also know Saphra's answer to this is "yes," even if it takes murdering 5 billion people (he said so in a previous thread, I can link if I need to). This is the philosophy of the extreme "pragmatist."

Nope, because I would tell TIM where to shove it. Figuratively speaking.

Thank you. Source?
Also, the fact that they found a specific, studyable natural phenomenom associated with indoctrination is a good thing. That goes some way to proving it isn't Space Magic. Meaning that if we can get a competent research team on the case, we can figure out how it works and neutralize it.

Basically, one of the other reasons I'm worried about the Collector base is that I now know, through these forums, that there are multiple people here who would feed billions of living humans into the goo vats if they "thought it would help." And If those peope exist in the ME universe, they're probably Cerberus higher-ups, or people who have a lot of pull in the Alliance military. Basically I want to keep the base out of the hands of monsters.

Billions? Come on, I'd only sacrifice millions!
No really though, "thought it would help" covers a lot of ground. If we're talking "goo a few million people or the trillions of sentient being in the galaxy will die", start up the blender.

I think about 80% of them say it to get attention they're lacking, but yeah that still leaves that wonderfully loopy 20%...
