It looks like it will be close to what you've posted. I don't think melee will play a major role, it will be more like a "Get lost you damn husks" button - and all classes get their own. A cool move to quickly handle enemies within melee range, but not something too fancy that can be used offensively (the charge the enemy bare handed way), that would be bad.

I hope melee is more important than you say.  What you're describing is hardly an improvement over what we already have.  I think we should be able to use our elbow of death like normal, complete with staggers like ME2, but then in certain situations (already staggered or otherwise vulnerable enemy) we get the option to use our class-specific melee attack.

It also appears that some Cerberus troops deal with melee as well, and appear to spawn out of nowhere (some have rockets attached to feet, coming from windows etc.) so maybe a lot of surprise combat in ME3 it seems.

I don't see the harm in having a melee heavy play if specked for it. Vanguards and infiltrators already pops in mind as something with a melee feel to them.

All I'm saying is - I don't want melee to be an alternative to weapons (and powers) except for specific circumstances (Aghlock described a few). I don't want Mass Kungfect 3 - but cool moves to take out enemies within melee range, sneak up on them to take them out quietly, when dealing with other melee creatures etc. That would be great, anything that increases the number of ways you can engage the enemy is most welcome, but weapons should play a more important part than melee imo.

Taking on the Reapers on foot with a couple of weapons and squadmates sounds like suicide - engaging them with an old fashion Claymore would be a little too far fetched :-)

Oh, okay.  That makes sense then.  I want it to be every bit as viable a choice as it was in ME2, but with a greater amount of options and flexibility.  I don't think it needs to overshadow most guns.  It should be an attractive option for certain situations though, and depending on how you play those situations might pop up more or less frequently.

Oh GOD NO.  "Another wave!"

I'm fine with enemies occasionally dropping in from unexpected locations, but if the wave mechanic from DA2 makes its way in, my heart will fill with sadness.  Tactical positioning should be an integral part of combat.  When enemies can appear anywhere with little or no warning, strategy goes out the window.

I'm all for more choice in our gear and skills, so long as stats and inventory management doesn't replace actual game play. What I mean is, success in the actual game should be dependent upon your ability to fight and think tactically, not having x points in ability y, or being level z before starting an encounter.

Best case scenario would be something like Bethesda's Fallout games, where you can CHOOSE to be a type A personality number cruncher and twink out your character, or choose not to without in any way diminishing the experience.

On the subject of melee, I'd like to see some special moves for Vanguards (and only Vanguards), as well as for any Krogan team members. Jack also if she makes a return; I kept thinking she should be able to biotic punch people like she does in cutscenes.

I think it's rather safe to say that ME3 will be DA2 waves free. It's a cover-based shooter after all, it doesn't make sense to make cover almost redundant with enemies appearing out of thin air all the time (there's no cover-system in DA2 which makes it not totally game-breaking). Being ambushed is usually fun, but it should not become a habit imo. More CQC loving enemies - hell yes!

@lazuli, I think it'd be more like the Object Rho fight in some cases, constant re-positioning and enemy reacts according to your actions.

Can't comment on DA2, haven't played it yet so not sure how it's combat would relate to ME3.

That was my first thought as well.  I hope Boz is right and the cover based shooter elements will preculde that being an option.  It happending occasioanlly so you have to reposition is fine, but rocket boots scream flash gordon too much for me.  I would love a lot fo rooms having multiple entrances so no location is perfect from a cover rpespective since enemies can charge in through the door at your back.(Though I will hate it if enemies spawn in the room you just cleared and then come at you through the door.

More fights like the Object Rho battle would certainly be welcome.

As for DA2's wave mechanic, I really don't think that it will make an appearance in ME2.  Many prominent reviewers slammed it, after all.  The way it works is that after you kill a few enemies in a fight "another wave" pops in.  Sometimes their arrival is coupled with animations.  The dead will rise up out of the ground, for instance.  Other times, enemies just materialize out of thin air, often in empty rooms you just passed through.  It smacks of rushed development time.  ME3 shouldn't suffer from the same problems.

But I don't want to get us any further off track.  I hope that with the enemies' increased ability to flank and pressure that Shepard's squadmates are more responsive and intelligent about their own positioning.

Loving the sound of weapon mods. Only other thing I'm waiting to hear is better armor customization. Custom Armor was a novel idea, but the armor parts just didn't really make much of a difference.

Yeah the only thing that mattered for the armor was the research, biotic, tech, medigel stuff.  The mods were worthless.  Hell they weren't that custom in looks either it was just a can of spray pain mostly, witht eh occasioanal really ugly helmet.  .

Yeah, like that cyberninja chick or that fat dude with the Avenger & Tonfa.. I'm actually kind of hoping against melee weapons in this game, unless they can somehow be kept very very much secondary equipment.

Yeah I just got my game informer today, and  some of the images look bad IMO.  You have an assault rifle in your right hand and instead you charge me with a glorrified billy club.  The rocket boot guy, he doesn't even have a gun was he going to bear hug shepard to death.  Cyber ninja at least was concept art at least, but in virtually every situation a persons game balance reaction should be a gun.  Melee should be secondarry and or very specialized reasons only.  Out of ammo, reloading, silent kills fine.  Running across a battlefield to hit you with a stick not fine.  Guns should never be outpaced in DPS by melee though IMO.

I don't think guys flying in will be that bad. In ME 2 collectors can fly in and to be honest they are quite vulnerable until they land. I think it would be good for ME 3 for certain enemies to be able to fly in to force you to react to them. If you don't deal with them before they land, or at least, start to deal with them then you'll be worse off for it. Right now it is too easy to get behind cover on most levels and just stay there, that seems too passive.

As for guy with stick running across the battlefield, I doubt it, I think that'll be more for giving vanguards trouble in CC.

Mostly excited about the class melee moves, hoping for a tech shield slam for my Sentinel, kinda like Shadow Brokers shield but more the size of a buckler. Maybe follow up with a biotic fist but animation would take probably take to long for it to be effective/useful.

Definitely. The "knife beats gun" paradigm should remain in purely the realm of WH40k.

Otherwise, I'm also looking forward to class specific moves for the mere flavor of it, if nothing else.

With melee, I just hope moves stay practical and in-universe, and there is no need to deal more damage than in ME2.

What I was imagining is similar to what Ahglock mentioned earlier, that if Shepard is engaging in melee that at least for the three combat classes, Shepard has more animation variety with melee attacks to reflect combat training.

Maybe where Shepard demonstrates some type of training similar to Krav Maga. So different elbow swings, various rifle butt animations and similar moves would be more than enough me.

Ladders have been confirmed to be in ME3 ^_^ that points towards some form of verticalism. I would love flying enemies, and not just have them fly in like the Collectors in ME2, but enemies who can stay airborne all the time. That would literally add another dimension to gameplay. :)

A correct use of litterally, I'd give you a cookie if I could.  That was one of the best things I read, ladders.  It adds another layer to the tactical game when they can design maps around that.  We might actually have to worry about high ground instead of the minor problems it caused in ME2.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing what something small and supposedly insignificant can add to overall gameplay. This is one of the best announcements in the GI article!

:D

I suddenly remembered the early Rainbow Six games with their CQC style, multiple levels in the same game level like a multi-level building, ladders and other choke point types, ME3 is feeling more and more epic

I like the expanded options with weapons. It seems as if infiltrators and vanguards won't be forced to be sniper or shotgun oriented from the beginning.

Nice to see some love for my CQC infiltrator

I hope with the soldier class you can choose to have only 2 weapons. Cause i never liked haveing all five weapons hanning off shepard just the assault rifle and pistol will do me fine.
