I've recently started a Mage, and it's been surprisingly enjoyable so far (I thought the pausing was going to ruin it for me, but I played a stupid nuke mage in DA:O, so it was like riding a bike), and I thought I'd get some opinions from those of you who've been doing it from the start. Rather than clutter up someone else's thread, I just decided to make my own.

This thead will now be used for discussion of nuking, companions, tactics, and how awesome I am (though ALL theads should be about that, I digress). This really isn't intended to be a guide (you've got 3 good ones already), as much as it is a place to post my crappy mage videos, and brainstorm with others. If you like raining down death on hapless enemies/companions/your dog (I'm not Michael Vick, he's fire immune), this is the thread for you.

The Force Mage Master class

Force/Blood Mage - Inside Job/Family Matter
Force/Blood Mage - Genocide of the Qun
Force Mage Gameplay
Force Mage/Team Glass Cannon - Nuclear Warfare
Force/Blood Mage - Walking Bomb (and other shenanigans)
Force/Blood Mage - Two-Minute Nexus Golem Gauntlet Clear
Force/Blood Mage - Massacre of the Righteous (Ser Varnell fight)
Dex/Cun Force Mage - Night Lies (Crit change/dmg test)
Force/Blood Mage - Dissent

Let me know what you think, and please, save the childish mage thread BS for someone else. Constructive criticism is not only welcome, but requested. 'YOU ARE STUPID WHY DID YOU DO THIS WHEN YOU COULD DO THAT' can be checked at the door. Thank you.

At the time, I believe I had:

Horror
Winter's Grasp (Winter's Blast)
Cone of Cold (Deep Freeze)
Fireball
Firestorm
Chain Lightning (Chain Reaction)
Tempest
Fist of the Maker
Telekinetic Blast
Unshakable
Gravitic Ring

I have a nasty respec habit, and have to try EVERYTHING at least once, so I don't really remember.

Looks solid, at the end of the day the bad guys are dead and you are alive, that's the whole point. You make it look pretty easy, so this build seems to work for you, which is the most important thing, use the spells you like. I personally love to use Gravitic Ring with an aoe spell on top of it aswell :-)

Do you find Horror's duration to be enough?  I'd rather be picking up Petrify for single-target lockdown because I find that the guys I want to Horror never stay under it long enough to die (and some of those guys don't even get affected by Horror...some boss-bosses come to mind).  Granted, it looks like you're still picking up a lot of spells (i.e. some trees half-filled) so it may be one of those "getting there" sorts of things.

Looks like you're going Elemental/Primal/FM, though.  Good stuff.  I'm always impressed with you no-pausers.  I spend a day and a half pausing especially since I can never trust myself to correctly target people on the fly (especially with my Mage, that's where it's the worst).  That is to say, I think you should dip into Spirit Healer for spec #2 for kicks (shameless promotion!!! :bandit:).

But hey, bonus points, it at least lets you get rid of Anders the chach-wagon. :wizard:

Awesome gameplay. I wondered how your no pause, in your face style would tranfer over to a mage character. It looks great so far. Especially with limited hotkeys on the 360. Seems like a lot of fun.

I think your guides are some of the best out there. They are well written and I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see a "This is my BOOMSTICK! - Force Mage Guide by AreleX"

"I propose a motion to see such a thread created" - Irish Porkchopp
"I second the motion" - guy in the back

All those in favor say " I "

Seems to work very well.

I should try force elementalist sometime, every other attempt to use force spells felt rubbish to me (blood mage or spirit healer with force for fortitude, nothing too extensive since how unimpressed I was with fist of the maker)

While I appreciate the recommendation, I'd never, in a million years, write a mage guide. There are already 3, I believe, and I don't feel I have anything really new or innovative to offer. If I were to, however, this is what it would consist of:

1. Gravitic mob
2. NUKE THAT **** DOWN
3. Teammate in AOE radius? STOP BEING A PUSS AND GO BACK TO STEP 2

That's really all it would be.

Also, my disdain for mage-fisticuffs is well documented, but you're free to ask me about the things I like to do as a mage. The accuracy of those things, I cannot be held accountable for; this is my first crack at mage in DA2.

EDIT: Another note, it's much easier for me to play the way I do at low levels, since I don't have any talents to fuss over quickmapping. Mid/Late game, when I have more, it would turn into a pause-fest, I suspect.

Well, the minimal pause play for a mage would be new and innovative for sure.

I hear you.  Amusing as these slap-fights can be, they usually derail quickly.

I'd still enjoy seeing some of your favorite encounters on your mage playthrough if you feel like recording them.  Pause fest or not, my bet is people will like them and learn from them.

By the way, thanks again for all the great tips and vids.  They've really helped me enjoy the game even more.

Nice video. Entertaining as always. But you really should have done this, it was pretty stupid to do that...

Looks fine to me. I also stepped off the no pause mode. Just not possible when playing as a Mage. Bit at the end ... Been there, done that. :)

Well, it seems you're already using well my favorite weapon as a Mage: Fenris.

You used Cold spells a few times on mercenaries.

My fav has got to be the chain lightning ccc, it's cool when merrill does it on my rogue/warr, but so much more satisfying when I'm the one who pulls the trigger, so to speak.

You suck! (Yeah, that's my idea of being critical.) Anyway, I'm a n00b mage myself, so cannot really evaluate your performance adequately. Looks nice, a lot of pretty effects ;)

Fenris is outstanding, especially with two mages that both have upgraded lightning and prison. Rogue should be ranged, of course. It becomes easier if you control Fenris so tactics take care of it, but then we wouldn't be playing as a mage, of course ...

Here's another video, this time from the Deep Roads. I ****ing LOVE to sit back and drop bombs on huge mobs, I loved it in DA:O, and I love it in DA2. I've been testing out ways to get my buddies Varric, Merrill, and Anders (he's not my goddamn buddy but you get the point) in on the action. I christen the layout I use for them...Team Glass Cannon (or Team If Anything Strong Gets Near Us, We're Pretty Boned). Preliminary results are very interesting and fun, though not every single area in the game has all the mobs spawning with neon 'DROP NUKE HERE' signs over their heads.

Force Mage/Team Glass Cannon - Nuclear Warfare

I kind of hate P.O.D, but I'll be damned if the song wasn't MADE for this.

You're very welcome, Irish Porkchopp! I'm glad that it's helping you have a good time. I can upload videos once in a while, I wouldn't mind that. I'll just make this thread the 'AreleX Gimpy 360 Nuke Mage home base'.

Pretty much this. I know it's effective to simply set your PC to tactics and control Fenris (who's basically a mini-PC Warrior Hawke), but I want to play HAWKE, dammit.

I hate Fenris, anyways.

What do you guys think of Walking Bomb and its upgrades? I see conflicting things about it (I've see conflicting things about almost every goddamn mage ability, though), but I'm thinking it would be good for those Qunari I won't be able to nuke, due to their fire/electricity resistance. It was also one of my favorite ways to kill things in Origins, so I'll probably give it a shot at some point on that merit alone, I just wanted to hear some opinions.

SuicidialBaby wrote...

I'm going to play around with those after I get done with this goddamned dragon speed run. I've been using Fist of the Maker and Chain Lightning as low-rent CC to hold enemies in the nukes.
