What do you guys think of Walking Bomb and its upgrades? I see conflicting things about it (I've see conflicting things about almost every goddamn mage ability, though), but I'm thinking it would be good for those Qunari I won't be able to nuke, due to their fire/electricity resistance. It was also one of my favorite ways to kill things in Origins, so I'll probably give it a shot at some point on that merit alone, I just wanted to hear some opinions.

Walking Bomb could be useful with an all range party, but, frankly, it is mostly situational since the AoE is only 4 meters so enemies have to be sticked pretty close togheter for it to function. More, Virulent doesn't work as it did in DAO, where the area was tied to the last enemy effected (similarly on how Chain Lighttning works), and instead it is calculated only from the place the first enemy explodes. So, enemies must be all togheter, in a close group, or the more "external" will never be affected.

To do so usually requires at last a combo of another 1-2 spells (for example Pull + CoC/Winter Blast + WB). There are some encounters, however, where it really, really shines (for example in the Dissent quest).

So it depends on if you have points to spare or not. I usually prefer to nuke (as you do yourself in the video) than rely on WB, since many times to use it in a meaningful way it requires comboing the same with other spells, but in that same lapse of time you could do much better/more damage with other things. However I know that WB can be used to devastating effects if you set the context in the right way. It is only that I'm a bit "lazy" and I simply prefer to damage things immediately instead of setting, waiting then fire. It depends mostly on your playstile and what you are better at.

Walking bomb is great. Its upgrades are not. The upgraded damage from the explosion basically requires 6 points in the pretty sub-standard sabotage tree in order to reliably get disorient from range and the damage bonus is only valuable on bosses as everything else will just be dead. Using it for bosses also requires something which from your videos I assume you have an aversion to, copious micro management.

This.  Except I'd would usually select party and focus fire instead of spirit strike.  Virulent upgrade wasn't worth it in my opinion.

Sure, good, but, as I said, you employed 3-4 spells (and two of them that are very good for CC) in a single occasion just to bring down a group (in fact I usually prefer to use Winter Blast/CoC, or even Glyph of Paralysis, to not waste both Pull + Grav, when I take WB).

Usually you can do the same (or even better, it depends) with just Grav + Tempest or Firestorm. There are occasions when WB is better (even much better), but the AoE is very small and so these occasions are very little.

Naturally it has style and it is good to see a bunch of enemies explode, but when we talk about standard application WB has less, overall.

I'm mad that Virulent doesn't work like it did in Origins, it was awesome. I'll still try it out anyways, I suppose. What's another 30 Maker's Sigh potions?

I really wish this were the case. :(

It's just that I don't want to have to heal and buff myself, so Anders ends up forced upon me in all my playthroughs. If I could just get a breather from him being a moron/terrorist, I think we'd be on much better terms. As it stands, however, The only Dragon Age character I hate more is Wynne (Seneschal Bran is is a d**khead too, now that I think about it).

Aaaaaaaaalmost, but I think I'm a few awful racially stereotyped robots short, sadly. :(

:wizard:

P.S - I'm not kidding about the Maker's Sigh potions; I bought at least 30, and only have 4 left. I am not out of the Deep Roads yet.

Glad to see you give a serious try at my favorite class mages. I am still super pissed my first file got the Isabela bug and Maker's Sigh bug (before each where well documented). I think by mistake, my new rogue may have gotten the Isabela bug. I may just retake the Mage, just switch to female for a different feel.

I just caaaaaan't! I'm still learning about the class myself, and I don't want to be telling people what to do if *I* don't know what the hell to do.

by all means don't feel obligated, I just get the feeling that this thread will eventually turn into a mage guide. A not intended to be a mage guide but morphed into one type of thing. Plus I know how much of a people person/guide writing guy you are, so 2 + 2 = 7.. you know how it goes.

besides.. I wouldn't say you don't know how to play the class, you seem to be golden from what I've seen.

nothing but love for ya my man :)

I'll tell you guys what: I've got some awesome ideas that I want to play around with, and if they work out, I'll see if I can write something.

If they don't, I will curl up into fetal position and cry, and we will never speak of it again.

Sound good?

I am not pushing you at all, meant mostly as a joke.

Mage is a class that requires planning due to the high number of AoE spells, buffs, and support skills. It fits that it needs to pause and that is something not everyone can enjoy.

Watch the end of Nuclear Warfare carefully.

You will see that Varric absolutely ruins Anders' s**t with Archer's Lance.

I purposefully turned up the game audio on him saying 'That was BEAUTIFUL!' there.

**** Anders.

Wait. Firestorm actually has each of its Fireballs shine a pretty cone of light onto the walls?

A thousand LOLs at the triple Firestorms. I've run with two mages before, but never three, and I generally spec them differently so I have access to the full spread. That's a thing of beauty.

A triple primal/arcane party with Aveline as an S&S vanguard could be a "safer" way to adopt this playstyle. With Claymore and Shield Bash, you'd almost always have a stagger, and plenty of ways to cash it in via Chain/Crushing Prison, with triple tempests keeping most enemies immobilized with no harm of detonating any of the good guys. Of course, that's half the fun...
