I tested a few things (mainly if it was possible to map Walking Bomb to a tactic setup without getting kamikaze'd every single time) out, and recorded a video to show my findings. I chose Blood Mage as my second specialization to try and offset the huge mana cost of nuking a bit. Team Glass Cannon also makes another appearance in this vid, slightly modified, and the results are quite fun to watch.

Walking Bomb (and other shenanigans)

Watch for Varric getting dirty at the end of the vid, I was impressed.

I also tested how hard I could nuke the **** out of Aveline and have her live. I gotta hand it to her; it doesn't even look like I'm playing on Nightmare, because she took them (and the Bomb explosions) like a CHAMP.

Re: Walking Bomb

I just can't find a decent use for it. It's cool when it goes off perfectly, I want to use it but it's just too cumbersome for too little firepower most of the time. On my current mage playthrough (second) I started out wanting to go deep into spirit, just because nobody seems to and I wanted to try out something different. Needless to say, I respecced out of it not too far in. I even have WB as a free glitch spell from respeccing and I never use it.

What Tactics are you using on Merrill's Walking Bomb?

Re: Nuking the Tank, consider Fenris whose passives give him 45% Magic Resistance.

You can then stick a Spirit Resistance Rune, a Fire Resistance Rune, AND a Cold Resistance Rune onto him (his 3 Rune slots are designed for just such a purpose IMO) so that he has COMPLETE IMMUNITY to ANY Elemental AOE spell in this game, without bothering with Elemental Aegis at all.

That is why I'm not giving Fenris to Danarius because a Nuker Mage + Fenris = Invincible.

Truly inspiring stuff. I had been meaning to go back and play the game with my mage again, and this has provided me all the incentive I need to make that my next play through. Again, great stuff!

AreleX, sorry if this has been answered already but what Staff and Robe did you use for most of Act One? Looks like the Staff of the Primal Order.

I imagine the Facebook Amulet is used too, +10% to all elemental spells sounds useful.

I used the Enchanted Coterie Mage Robes/Boots from Bonny Lem's Wares, and the Staff of Parlathan/Apostate's Courage/Staff of the Primal Order. I just got Dura's Blue Flame yesterday, and am really enjoying it so far.

I'll post tactics when I'm more confident that they can work in a wide range of areas. They are at the moment, but I don't want to be giving anybody terrible advice.

I currently started a Mage due to my first getting the Isabela bug. I have all DLC items except for 2 of the Facebook ones. At level 5 I gave Aveline the Amulet of Ashes (Best Buy Preorder) and the Irons (EA Store Preorder) and got her 95% Fire Resist and 20% Resist to the other Elements. I know most don't have both of those but I though it might be worth mentioning.

I was thinking of using Fenris in this setup
http://biowarefans.c...YmoRkcM0HriQfPS
OR
Aveline in this setup (Varric would be setup differently to give Disorient)
http://biowarefans.c...xX1mzcYkRo0BteC

Anders in Martyr spam mode to spam cast Heal/Aid Allies, Haste, Spirit Bolt, Chain Lighting, and Walking Bomb
http://biowarefans.c...1zYmMcoRk0EeBCv

Hawke as an Elemental Force Mage (Needs Second spec)
http://biowarefans.c...MYoSiht1aVPwQrf

And Varric as a Machine Gun
http://biowarefans.c...bURzMtEvesLnjNA
If using Aveline

I did the Nexus Golem's Gauntlet as a Mage, and it was a whole lot of fun. Contrary to popular (read: stupid) belief, mages are not weak, and I finished it in the same amount of time as my Warrior and Rogue, give or take a bit here and there, due to pausing. I recorded a video, and my capture device kinda shat itself, but I've uploaded it anyway, and you can decide whether or not to watch.

Two-Minute Nexus Golem Gauntlet Clear

I'm fully aware that Revenants are cold immune, but I just bought Cold-Blooded, and I wanted to goddamn use it. Sue me.

@Anubis:

I would rethink the Defender tree, since Fenris (as stated earlier) doesn't need Elemental Aegis for magic immunity. I suppose you could do it if you don't want to blow money on the Etched Ring of the Twins.

For Anders, I'd take the points out of Crushing Prison, and put them in upgraded Heal/Haste. With a BRITTLE from you, and an Archer's Lance from Varric, you'll make Elites dead, instead of just locked down. Two Chain Lightnings are good for staggers.

I think you're missing out on a LOT by not getting Punishing Lance for Varric. He has one-shotted almost every single BRITTLE Elite I have come across thus far with it. If you really plan on going for broke with the Walking Bomb, I'd put one point into Speed, and take the rest of the points from the Specialist tree, and put them into Sabotage for Fatiguing Fog. I'd also take out Overtime and the Kickback upgrade from his personal tree.

Keep in mind, these are only my half finished mage playthrough opinions, and I'm just going off of what has worked for me.

How is this for a Disorienting Varric with the Lance (No Disorienting Shot yet as it is bugged)?
http://biowarefans.c...EriuQwSGoacksvI
Would work well with Aveline too (her build added to the other post).

I think that would work, I'd still lose Overtime and Backlash, though.

Try out Hail of Arrows and its upgrades, I implore you. It isn't the best skill in the world, I'm aware, but a storm of arrows, lightning, and fire raining down on a mob is one of the most gorgeous sights in the game, I think. So much fun!

Those are random items he carries. Exit the disused passage and reenter. That creates an auto save. Go check his store. If he does not have what you want load the autosave and check again. If you buy an item save your game, exit the area and reenter to create another autosave. Continue shopping/reloading/shopping. He can also carry random +%cold damage rings and belts (random modifiers on rogue  rings and belts.)

You can shop for random mage armor with +%fire from the apparel shop in Lowtown. Use an autosave from exiting the Hanged Man. +%Spirit gear can be shopped in the Gallows.

I just got the Robes. Aren't the Apostate's Robes from the Lowtown shop better and cheaper?

Apostate's Robes, 88 Armor, +27 Defense, +22 Mana
Enchanted Coterie Mage Robes, 63 Armor, +22 Defense, +5 Mana Regeneration

I was wondering was are everyone's thoughts on the Spirit tree on Hawke?
Death Syphon is useful if you Nuke a lot (useless on AI that stays still but you as Hawke move) and Dispel Magic seems situational but still useful against Barrier mages.

While I can't offer much commentary on Dispel, my first mage used Spirit Blast and Death Siphon a lot. That was my own 3 Mage and a Dwarf game and I thought it went pretty well. Fights were over pretty quite and it was rather rare to have someone fall unless it was to a missed Blood Mage or an Assassin.

I tried having Anders take dispell magic once when I was playing my rogue on nightmare. It seemed great at first, but it was too situational and the cool down too long to be worth it in my opinion.

I'll give you an example: We were up against a blood mage. We did some damage, and before I could interrupt him, he cast that spell that drains life everything around him. Anders hit him with Dispel Magic, which interrupted him. Unfortunately, he just started casting again and nobody else had a dispell to hit him with so I had to just back off and wait for him stop casting it.

I never tried it on the barriers that mages put up around themselves, but that might be another use for it, provided you can kill them before they cast it again.

EDIT:  I should probably mention that in that scenario with teh blood mage, I had already blown Assassinate and Twin Fangs taking down an enemy assassin.  If not for that, I probably could have dropped the blood mage instantly as soon as Anders hit him with dispell.

Also, I believe the upgrade to dispell causes a brief stun, which could provide ample time to dispatch an enemy mage before they can recover, as long your timing is right.

Another advantage of Aveline with Aegis and/or Elemental Resistance equipment over Fenris with Magic Resistance is that regular Magic Resistance cuts Haste's length.

Normal with occasional dips to Hard. So take from it what you will. Unfortunatly, I have enough problems on those settings. It will be a good long time before I try Nightmare.
