Did you play on Nightmare?

Normal with occasional dips to Hard. So take from it what you will. Unfortunatly, I have enough problems on those settings. It will be a good long time before I try Nightmare.

T3hAnubis is asking because many normally great Mage spells for single target damage on Normal (Spirit Bolt and Stone Fist) do not pack the same punch on Nightmare and Hard because the HP scales much higher.  At the latter settings, it's preferable to take spells that benefit from common +damage gear to boost damge, spells that take advantage of common elemental weaknesses, or spells that get huge +damage from combos.

I've been angling to use Spirit Bolt for nuking damage as well, but can't because of the stupid Disorienting Shot bug.  If that were fixed, Disorienting Shot + Spirit Bolt would be pure money.  I'd take that in a heartbeat.

The Varnell fight is one of my favorite in the whole game; it's like Horde mode in Dragon Age. Huge groups of enemies that just keep spawning and spawning makes for a good time, ESPECIALLY for a Force Mage with a few WMDs loaded up, and a mage with Walking Bomb. With that in mind, I recorded my run through of the fight for you guys to watch.

Massacre of the Righteous (Varnell fight)

Fun to watch, even more fun to play.

Best part is 1:36-1:46. Brittle, Disorient, Archer's Lance, and a perfect Walking Bomb from Anders. He really is trying his bleeding little heart out to make me not hate him...and it's almost working.

I don't like this person I've become!

You're getting 100% perfect Brittle on Cone of Cold. How high is your level and your Magic? One theory is that Magic would increase the hit chance of status effects on powers (e.g. Stun for Fist of the Maker, Brittle on CoC).

Also, Anders's Walking Bomb Tactic?

I was level 18, with, I believe...58? MAG. Somewhere around there. I also have Elemental Mastery and Deep Freeze.

EDIT: I think the chance lowers as the enemies go up in rank, because I can tell you for sure that the BRITTLE procs I was getting there are definitely not representative of how it works for me all the time, or even most of the time, but I leave the numbers and percentages to people who can actually count past five, it's not my thing.

I know for critter-grade mobs (The ones with the teeny-tiny health bar that pop in one move 9.5 times out of 10) are all but guaranteed the CCC effect, if they survive the move that applies it.

Awesome gameplay. I wondered how your no pause, in your face style would tranfer over to a mage character. It looks great so far. Especially with limited hotkeys on the 360. Seems like a lot of fun.

I think your guides are some of the best out there. They are well written and I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see a "This is my BOOMSTICK! - Force Mage Guide by AreleX"

"I propose a motion to see such a thread created" - Irish Porkchopp
"I second the motion" - guy in the back

All those in favor say " I "

One of the benefits of Elemental Mastery is that it ensures 100% Brittle on both Cone of Cold and Winter's Grasp when rated against Normals.  I've found this to be almost completely the case on Hard setting.  If you target a Normal with either of those powers, it will almost always get the Brittle status.

Getting Elemental Mastery is the most important upgrade you can get for increasing the frequency of Brittle.

I was think of this for Walking Bomb:
Enemy: Between long and middle range - use condition for next tactic
Then one of these:
Enemy: Rank Elite of Higher - Walking Bomb

I am not at home but I think there is a tactic for Highest HP too. If there is then make the first one check for it, then check distance.

I just started playing my mage again on nightmare, and I was doing pretty well, but then I tried the Magister's Orders quest. There's a room in that dungeon where you get a wave of giant spiders, followed by more spiders, undead, and arcane horror. It's in Act 1, so you're still pretty low level at ths point. I believe I was level 9 when I tried it.

That first wave of spiders totally ruined my day. They've got a pretty strong knockback on their attacks, and their health bars are moderately large. They managed to keep Anders and Merril pretty well locked down the whole time while I tried my best o kill them off. By the time the first wave was finally down, we were in no shape to take on the next one. I'm thinking about just doing something else and coming back after gaining a level or two.

Any other advice for dealing with these buggers? I was using chain lighting (with Fenris there to stagger them) and lighting weapons, which they're supposed to be vulnerable to but I still seemed to be killing them very slowly.

If they are dying slowly you missed the stagger. The poison spiders are weak and die very fast. When the Arcane Horror pops, focus fire, interupt with strong melee attacks, stuns, or any crowd control.

Right, the poison spiders did die pretty quickly. It was the first wave of giant spiders that seemed to take forever. Hmmm...... I might have to reload that save and see how everyone was specced. I'm having a hard time remember how I had my companions set up now. The biggest problem seemed to be that Anders and Merril were pretty much helpless the entire fight, constantly getting knocked around by the spiders' attacks.

Well, according to the descriptions, even Mastery only gives you a 60% Freeze/Brittle chance on CoC. But again, BioWare doesn't have the most accurate in game description of powers. Fist of the Maker does near 100% stun on Normals with a high enough Magic even though the description says 20%, and Arelex has very high Magic.

Magic definitely helps in more ways than Mage DPS (and gear requirement). It's just we're not sure about it yet. Anyways almost pure Magic is practically the way all DPS Mages should go.

My assumption is that since status effects (such as BRITTLE) depends on the enemy's Magic Resistance (rather than Cold Resistance), a high enough Magic on your Mage could probably negate that Magic Resistance.

Strange, I was thinking of something different.

Enemy: Clustered with at least Three Enemies - use condition for next tactic
Enemy: Rank Elite or Higher - Walking Bomb
Enemy: Rank Elite or Higher - Crushing Prison

The Highest HP tactic fails very often- it would the the Highest HP the AI *sees*, so at the beginning of a fight, Anders sees only one basic Archer popping out, and that guy has the Highest (and Lowest) HP.

The Lowest HP tactic, however, works perfectly and helps Anders with Blood of My Enemy a lot.

Anyways, having tons of fun with a 2 Mage 2 Rogue party spamming Fatiguing Fog and Walking Bomb at the moment. It's really gratifying how you can build your entire Nightmare party around a single spell (Walking Bomb) and succeed in spectacular fashion.

I think you underestimate Are's stubborness. :P But I'd like to see one as well. Even if just to match my own thoughts/impressions of my favorite class in DA2.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath.  But I can hope that Ego will win over stubborness when she realizes that she does mage better than everyone.

Tempting my ego is cheating! Rumination and Jack Nader are very good mages (from the videos I've seen), and have far more experience with the class than I do. Scrogublitzen does not get a mention because he uses Fenris, and I can't get number one on the Deep Roads Dragon speed run list with 3 mages (yes I'm bitter). If you see him, feel free to throw rocks and jeer.

Best? Debatable.
Most fun to watch? Without question!

I'm at the To Catch a Thief quest, and I really don't feel like dealing with the Thumbs-Up glitch (or playing Act III, I hate Act III) when the patch is right around the corner, so I think I'm just going to start a new char.

I invite all of you to give name suggestions! Note that I have a strange obsession with names that end in the letter A. I'm not sure why.
