48÷2(9+3) = 48/2*12 = 24*12 = 288

A kidney Stone would be less painful then explaining why the correct answer is 2.

48÷2(9+3) = 48*0.5*(9+3) = 48*0.5*12

Then multiply in whatever frickin' order you like.

48*0.5*12 = 24*12 = 288
48*0.5*12 = 48*6 = 288

Can we be done now? I need some caffeine.

But you're technically carrying out the divison operation when flipping the 2 over to 1/2 (which is of course correct)

Just sayin'

What is the answer? I fail at math, even basic ****.
48÷2(9+3) = ????
2 or 288?

Also how do I add a poll to this post?

48 / 2 X (9+3) = ?
48 / 2 X 12 = ?
24 X 12 = ?
288 = ?

I've always hated math. Seriously. God damn.... mother.... arrgh.

Yes, but the division seems to be adding to confusion with people asking "do you divide first or multiply first??"  Division and multiplication are essentially the same thing, after all.  Maybe removing the division smokescreen will make it easier to see.

I suppose the confusion lies on whether you interpret 2(9+3) as 2x or 2 * x.

That is exactly the same term.

The problem is that many asume a/b*c=(a/b)*c=a/(b*c)
The first equation is correct since per definition you always calculate a term from left to right.
Multiplication is associative ,division however is not associative and to avoid easily misinterpreted terms like in the first post a/b is defined as a*(b^-1) and the division replaced by a multiplication so that associativity can still be used in solving an equation.

The correct solution is 288 as many others in this thread have already said.

I admit I didn't read the entire thread, but reading the first 2 pages drove me crazy.

The problem is: 48/2(9+3) using infix notation (obviously).
1. 48/2(9+3)
2. =48/2(12)
3. (Now, left to right) =24(12)
4. =288

To confirm this I punch this exact equation into my TI-89: 48/2(9+3) and it spits out 288.
I have a BS in Electrical Engineering and I've taken Calculus 3(with an A) if any of that tells you anything about my ability to do basic arithmetic.

Ok, now assume I present you with three boxes. I tell you one contains $1,000,000 and if you pick that box, you get to keep the money. After you pick, I open one of the other two boxes. It is empty. I then give you a chance to change your first pick. Should you stick with your initial guess, or switch to the other box?

Switching = higher probability of picking the box with $$$

Switch since the probability that the other box has the price is 2/3, while picking the right box right at the start only has a probability of 1/3

When I first picked the box, I had 3 choices, ergo 33% chance of getting the prize.

Since now I know your box is empty, I have a 50% chance of getting the prize. Because there's only 2 choices left. (which means my 33% chance got bumped to 50%, because of the elimination of a possibility)

Hmmmm... It's a 50/50 chance. Sooo (since I'm stubborn), I would keep my box :blush:

Input was incorrect, correct input is 48÷2(9+3), not 48÷(2(9+3)).  When corrected, returned the correct answer of 288.

That's because you inserted parentheses around the 2(9+3)

Okay here is something really strange.
I have tried 2 different calculators. The one I have in my hand is a Sharp EL-520W scientific calculator.
When I enter the equation exactly as it is written in the OP : 48÷2(9+3) = With this ÷ division symbol the answer I get is 2.

However when I use a different calculator and I use the / as the division symbol so that the equation reads 48/2(9+3) =

I get the answer 288.
