Is there a good general rule to follow for generating high friendship marks? It seems that no matter what I choose, someone's pissed off about it for some seemingly unexplained reason.

Example: I accepted a quest to go find some dwarf's idiot sons lost in the deep roads. Isabela was in my party, but said nothing while I was in dialogue with the quest-giver. After accepting the quest, *poof* I gain 5 or 10 or something-or-other rivalry points with her. Shouldn't she have indicated that she wasn't going to like that response, so I could have perhaps rejected the quest?

This crap happens all over the place; I can't make a decision without someone hating my guts for it for some unexplained reason, and it makes producing friendships with people I want to romance much more difficult.

I'm sure this was discussed somewhere else, but I am NOT reading through 1000+ forums with anywhere from 20 to 1000 posts in them to find it.

You can romance with rivalry or friendship. Just so you know.

Hahaha, ok... I did read THAT somewhere, but thought that I must have been misinterpreting it.

"I hate you, but hey, you got some nice boots there...."

Isabela generally expects you to ask for a reward rather than just helping people out of the goodness of your heart

That's no comfort if you're committed to one path or the other, though.

True enough.
If you select sarcastic option, in general, Isabella likes that :) I never had a problem getting her to like me though.  They are a particular bunch though :)

I was actually just using that as an example, it's been happening to me everywhere, and that part with Isabela was most recent and freshest in my mind., but thx for the tips. :)

Rivalry =/= hatred, though. That's what's cool about it. It can easily respect mutual respect between two people who simply don't share the same worldview.

That said, I totally agree with the fact that some things the companions disapprove of don't always make sense (and could even, at times, be seen as inconsistent with their characters).

She doesn't seem to like Hawke interfering. Especially when not getting paid. Got rivalry from her for agreeing to find Ninette for Ghyslain, helping Fenris for free in Act 1, offering to help Emeric in Act 1.

For Isabela in particular, I suggest reading the Isabela FAQ linked in my sig. Generally though, you need to get a feeling for what sorts of personalities the companions have on most topics. Just remember that rivalry isn't necessarily a bad thing! Rivalry = we're friends but we disagree. Friends = we're friends and we agree on a lot.

Yes, she doesn't believe in good deeds without a monetary reward on the whole.  With Ninette though I think the motivation is slightly different.  Isabela's been trapped in an unhappy marriage herself, values her freedom and Ghyslain is obviously a nasty piece of work who treats his wife like a possession.

Figure out what the companion likes, believes, and wants. Do that.

It seems that no matter what I choose, someone's pissed off about it for some seemingly unexplained reason.

That's because different companions want different things. I'd say the reasons, if not obvious from simply interacting with them, become clearer once you watch what gives friendship and what gives rivalry.

Anders: Wants mages to be free.

Aveline: Likes law and order. Help people, help her with her quests, don't do evil things, and don't extort people for money.

Fenris: Hates slavers and mages. If you kill slavers and help the Templars, he'll be happy.

Isabela: Generally laid back. Likes it when you ask people for money. Likes it when you flirt with her.

Merrill: Like magic, elves, being nice, and old things. If you meet a demon, chat with it before attacking it.

Varric: Seems the easiest to get along with for me. Seems to only dislike it when you're an utter bastard.

That said, the *majority* of point you get are during personal quests. As long as you fulfill them as the companion desires, you'll do well.

Yeah, I found that rather interesting. Although I didn't really understand why she got rivalry points for Hawke agreeing to help Emeric look into the missing women issue, unless it was an expansion of 'you should let the women be free'.

To me it was more of an "Emeric has a kind of creepy stalker vibe going on".

You can get friendship points from her for turning the quest down, you still get to do the quest but basically you arent agreeing to help the obnoxious hubby. Izzy has issues with obnoxious hubbies :)

The wiki for each quest will give you a run down on what kind of Friendship/Rivalry you can expect from the interactions.

Once you get a feel for their personality types; just take them along on quests that you know they would like or you are planning on reacting in away that gives you the blue/red points that you seek.

It is possible, by the way, to have a friendship with Fen and still side with the mages. Though it is advisable to leave him out of quests that deal with mages; except for Wayward Son. Do take him to see Danzig and have him make him talk; then replace him in the party.

Also, once you get them up to 100% on either side they will stay there no matter what you do.

For Isabella. You can get +20 blue/red for taking her in to the fade. Plus she has the best scene in it.

Ok thanks all, for all your tips and info, I've gotten Isabela to 100%, but for some reason when I went to my house at night, it was Avaline that was there - I haven't talked to her yet for fear of locking in a relatiosnship with her. I almost never use her and have never flirted with her. I keep seeing something about your romances showing up at your house eventually in forums, but does it also happen with party members you HAVEN'T been romancing, or did I just screw up my romance with Isabela?

Avaline will only show up at your house if she's there to interact with the dog, or has a quest for you. She's not a LI. Actually randomly all of your 'friends' will randomly be at your house to interact with your dog. Randomly.

As for romance options showing up -- Anders will come if you've gotten that far into his flirtation that he makes hot kissies with you. Fenris will show up after his personal quest if you've flirted enough, and merrill will if you've given her the heart option once or twice as well -- all after act2.  Isabela will show up if you flirt a couple times, and offer sexytimes. Its in this sceen that you initiate the romance or not. Just make sure you dont get sexytimes-issy after you've sparked a romance with Fenris, or he'll not come back to you in ac3 ;p

There's no romance possible with Aveline so you needn't worry. When a bunch of estate scenes are queued to trigger at once when you enter, it will choose one to run. If you get a scene like that, just leave the estate and return and the next scene will queue. Some scenes require you to walk into the doorway, or talk to somebody. All romance scenes at the Hawke estate start as soon as Hawke enters the estate.

A lot of the companions show up randomly at the estate to talk to your dog. That is probably the case with Aveline, as I believe she is the first. I think it's hilarious that the freakin' dog gets more visitors than Hawke, but I digress.
