It's probably been asked before, and I couldnt seem to find anything by sifting through the endless threads here so I thought Id ask (again?) anyway.

I recently had to rebuild all of my characters from the ground up (replaced my old Xbox and didnt have a flash device to carry over my save games to my new console) and finally got around to re-rolling my Vanguard.  I've been looking over the wiki but still cant come to a conclusive decision as to whether or not I should go with the Eviscerator or GPS.

The only reason Im even asking is because on said wiki, it says that the GPS doesnt benefit as much as other weapons at close range? Which begs the question, does that mean the Eviscerator does more damage after I charge in or does the GPS? (Charged shot notwithstanding)  Seems like a silly question probably I know but again, thought I'd ask anyway.

GPS gets the same ranged bonus. I'd still take Eviscerator if I HAD to pick between these two.

So essentially, GPS if you play more at "ranged" and eviscerator if you go more smash mouth if Im reading that right?

I don't like GPS for the Vanguard, because it has annoying fire delay (I want to shoot right when I press the mouse button). GPS is pretty good for pretty much all other classes IMHO. Neither weapon is my favourite though.

I noticed that too about the GPS.  Not sure if that's a "bug" or if it's deliberate.  Either way, I think Ive made up my mind.  Thanks for the insight.

Out of the two, Eviscerator for sure. But I would pick the Scimitar over both of them.

It's not a bug. It's because you can charge the GPS. So basically if you press your mouse button the game doesn't know if you want to shoot right away or if you want to charge the GPS. So it's built to fire upon release of the mouse button. That way you can either fire a single shot or charge and then fire two rounds aka charged shot.

On topic: I'd take the Eviscerator. It does more damage than a normal GPS shot and usually you play a Vanguard agressively and charge so range isn't an issue (and you also have a Pistol and SMG for other ranges). I'd say Claymore - but between Evi and GPS it's Evi for me if I'd play a non-Claymore Vanguard (or a new Vanguard that has yet to pick up the Claymore). The GPS is perfect for other classes like the Adept though.

OT- Or in my case, the RT button (I play on xbox 360)
Back on topic - Ive pretty much decided Eviscerator.  I play pretty smash mouth with my Vanguard (as do many others Im sure lol) I didnt even know about the GPS not doing as much damage point blank until I looked at the wiki and the "Secrets of the Firepower Pack" article.  After seeing both of those I started questioning the GPS for my Vanguard lol.  But I agree, any other class it seems like it would be pretty good if you took shotgun training.

Yeah for vanguard I go with eviscerator over gps.
GPS shines better for adepts and to some extent engineers.

Don't forget the Katana, it's a solid shotgun before the DCS mission. It's very effective against shields and barriers (slightly better than Evi when you're up against these types of defenses - which you do most of the time), has a nice 5 shots / clip, looks good and sounds even better. It's lacking against armor so you do want the Evi when you go pick up Mordin.

BTW I never found the Eviscerator to be that responsive, it's much better than the GPS, but behind all the others.

For me, I have a personal preference to Evis Vanguards, to the point I take Sniper training on the Collector Ship. I have a Claymore Vanguard and do ok, but I usually have more fun packing the Evis. It has the most to do with play style and personal preference, so try them out and see what you like. I can't stand the Scimitar and the Katana is purely lacking when I try to use it, but again that is MY play style more than a commentary of the quality of the guns.

I pack the GPS when I want a bit more range, like my Engineer and Adept shotgunners, or when I play the Soldier, because their isn't much more powerful than a Widow, Matlock, and GPS loaded Soldier, because the charged GPS is almost as powerful(and maybe more) than the claymore in a single burst, which when coming off ARush is devastating.

For me it works, I like the added range and versitility of the Sniper Rifle, though I have been considering a Matlock run, but I like the Evis/Sniper better than the Claymore/?.....personal preference.

Only reason I never factored the Claymore into the equation is because for my personal play style, the Claymore just doesnt fit.  Dont get me wrong, I cream my pants over how much raw power it has, but the fact it only has a 1 round magazine makes me a sad panda lol.  And Im not very good with the "reload exploit" either :(

Well what about the Scimitar? I might be a bit biased as it is my favourite weapon, but it is very effective and efficient. The low power is countered by the high rate of fire. I also tend to melee along/between the shots so it's quite ammo efficient too.

I thought about it for a bit.  And for that reason alone, speed over raw power.  Even gave it a "shot" once (jeez that's two puns today Ive made already lol) and it just didnt work out for me.  On normal enemies it worked out fine but when it came down to Scions, it just didnt pack the "Oomph" I wanted.  And Im the kind of crazy S.o.B that "charges" head long into Scions without regard to my own life lol (And yet another pun.  I really have to stop lol)

All shotguns are pretty much equal. Scimitar is great when you wanna stagger things like Geth Prime - its rapid fire stagger effect + ammo power makes it as good as any shotgun.

@Aradace
Well the Scimitar does outpace the Eviscerator on DPS even against armor. However, if you don't like using it, there's not that much point. Both weapons are fine.

@ashwind
Yes, the Shotguns are extremely well balanced, so it comes down to playstyle and personal preference what's best for you. I tend to kill things fastest with the Scimitar and I like the fast pace. Still, I need to try the Claymore on my next vanguard run...

Yea :). It's a matter of preference really. Beautiful thing about shotties is that they're all pretty useful in any given situation. Just a matter if you prefer "DPS" or "Spike Damage"

Yes, Claymore isn't THE shotgun for Vanguards, that's for sure. If you rely heavily on squadmates and strategic combos such as warp bombs, then Evi and Scimitar do much better job than Claymore.

Out of Evi vs GPS, I'd go with Evi. GPS has its advantages in that it can be charged, but that's very situational. So if you like being aggressive Evi is the way to go; if you like charging only occasionally and taking out powerful enemies with 1-2 shots, GPS is the way to go.

Yes... claymore kills too fast BUT you can also choose squadmates with powers like Flashbane granade if your are carrying the Claymore. Harby dont like granades :devil:

I'd take the Evi over GPS for the Vanguard; for aggressive playstyle the GPS can be a bit unreliable and tends to fare better at range and unless you plan to charge up every shot of it then it can be frustrating charging the GPS and Charging yourself (on xbox it can be annoying).

Personally like the Scimitar, slap an ammo power on it and it's pure mayhem for any clusters of enemies unlucky enough to be frozen or set on fire. =)

Agreed.  I'm not fond of the Eviscerator, but I'd choose it over the GPS for a Vanguard.  That delay and its long range just don't suit the Vanguard well.

The few times I'd used the GPS on my Vanguard, I learned to fully charge the GPS before using the charge... works really well, you just need to be behind some kind of cover while charging the gps.

Charge gps, charge, release mouse button.

Prefer the claymore. Never really like the Evi that much. Would go with the simitar if I didn't have the claymore or GPS.
