EDIT: 4/12/2011 7:17PM CDT

An official response from Bioware is at: http://social.biowar...8/index/7036701
It appears Rob from Bioware will be editing his original thread with each update.

Some have reported that EA says the server issue could last as long as 24-48 hours. (EDIT:  That was at least 48 hours ago).  I suspect this is a standard tech support reponse.  In the meantime, I sent a message to one of the Bioware folks, who says he'll pass it along, so maybe we'll get an official update in this forum.

Just FYI... I was able to launch the game and disable the "auto login" function before having my DLC unauthorize.  To speed up the loading process, I disabled the intro movies, which can be done on the launcher's configuration menu.

If you're DLC has already gone "unauthorized"... try logging out and relaunching the game.  That has worked for some.  If you often experience errors with DLC authorizing, sadly you won't be able to do a lot of troubleshooting until the servers are up and running again.

EDIT:  Adding... 4/9/11 10:17am CDT

There seems to be a lot of confusion out there concerning how DLC works in Dragon Age: Origins, regardless of versions.  Here are the facts as best I understand them:

Q: Do I need to log in every time to authorize my DLC?
A:  NO.  After you purchase DLC (or in the case of the Ultimate Edition, redeem the extra content code) you only need to use the game's online login ONCE to authorize the content.  After that, you can, in theory, log off and play the game for the rest of your life without ever seeing a "DLC not authorized" message again.

Q: Why does the game ask me to log in (or automatically log in)?  If it's not to authorize DLC before every game session, then what the heck is the point?
A:  Logging in to the EA/Bioware servers allows for two things.  First, it synchronizes your player profile with the Bioware Social Network, allowing your achievements and (if you choose) some screen shots to be posted online.  Second, it allows the in-game feedback system to tell Bioware how you're using the game and how it is running on your machine.  (Both these functions can be turned off on the Options > Online menu).

Q: So if I don't need to log in to authorize DLC for each game session, why does the DLC sometimes become "unauthorized"?
A:  Because, for whatever reason, whenever you ARE logged in, the game checks to verify that you have the rights to use the DLC.  Whether that's a bug or by design, Bioware has not really said.  The bottom line, however, is that sometimes, when there is a service interruption (either a problem with EA/Bioware's servers OR a problem with the background services running on your own computer)... the DLC will become unauthorized.

Q: Why does unauthorized DLC prevent me from properly loading a saved game?  Even if I haven't played the DLC in question?

A:  Once DLC is installed, and quests are given (example:  the Sulcher's Pass quest, the Feastday Gifts and Pranks quests)... these are not part of every saved game going forward.  If you *have* played some of the DLC, and your characters are equipped with DLC bonus items, these too will cause errors when trying to load a saved game.

EDIT:  Adding... 4/10/11 ... 12:30am CST

It appears the XML editing trick can cause some other issues... DLC items not appearing in game.  So it appears to only be a valid option for people who have DLC installed but haven't played any DLC yet.  As always, before changing any files, make a backup copy.

Who could have ever guessed there could ever be a problem with having to log in to play a single-player game?

I really liked the team members in DA2. I particularly enjoyed the voice acting.

And I was actually going to play through DA:O again to see what would happen with a different imported game (in DA2) when I discovered that all my DLC was "unauthorized". -again.

I'll give your suggestion a try, RaenImrahl. It just might work.

[Edit] It did work, thanks :)

Glad to help. The server issue exacerbates an already-flawed DLC system, which already causes problems for some on the best of days. So I know for some this server issue is the proverbial salt in the wound.

At least, from what I've been able to gather, the DLC system for DA2 is far more forgiving.

RI

p.s. When the server comes back up... could someone make sure and post it on the forum?

The game only needs to be able to connect to the servers to authorise DLC. If you've already done that you can play anytime you want with 0 'net connection as long as you log out of the game. Just tried it myself and the game still worked perfectly. Dunno what the drama is. Maybe it's because people insist on using hacks like changing their XML file data from 1 to 0 instead of actually getting their DLC to work? 99.99% of the time the problem is user side, not server side.

I have not changed a thing in the files (unless you count using mods in which case I'm going to have to call BS) and I'm still having issues tonight.

I have installed no mods and implemented no hacks, only installed DLC that I've had since pretty much the first day any of them were released.  Since this afternoon when I loaded my game back up, all I get is the 'unauthorized' message.  Ten minutes before that it worked fine.  Just as another piece of anecdotal remark-ery.

Yep, saw it in the eary 1980s and for some bizzare reason it stuck in my mind all this time. Bought it on DvD a couple months ago.

As far as Dragon Age DLC not working this weekend, I fixed it using this advice from TheRejectedDude on Steam forums.

"Locate AddIns.xml in "C:/Users/(Username)/Documents/Bioware/Dragon
Age/Settings" and edit it using WordPad or any XML editor. Press Ctrl + F
to find. Replace all RequiresAuthorization="1" with
RequiresAuthorization="0". ALL not just 1."

I logged on today to continue my epic bloodbath in the deep roads, & I'm told that ALL of my DLC downloads are now illegal downloads & that I have to buy them again. BULL**** it's illegal! I legally bought every one of them with REAL money that I earned, & I'll be damned if I have to wait 3 days for some ****** to come back from his island vacation & fix the problem.

On this note..I would like to just point out that it was EA tech support that told me to changes the 1s to 0s and that would fix my problem. It's not my fault they haven't created a patch for this issue and fixed it on their own.

Yeah, the alteration to the addins.xml is a solution from EA tech support to repair a problem they have with their DRM. It works just fine for some problems, but apparently not for this one.

Who said they were "illegal"?  A lot of people are having problems.  No need for that, now.

Have you tried launching the game and logging out?

I have some questios and I'm not finding the forums too helpful at the moment. Looks like I also suffering from this blackout or whatever is, but here go my quiries...

What is DLC? (DownLoadable Content?)

I purchased 'Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition'....I was assuming the extra content did not expire as it did not say it was some trial version. So it is? Or am I still suffering from this blackout as well?

Thanks in advance.:crying:

The extra content your refer to *is* the DLC that's discussed in length on this forum.  Before the Ultimate Edition was published in the fall of 2010, all of the bonus content in the Ultimate Edition (everything except Origins and Awakening) was available for purchase separately.

Unfortunately, when Ultimate Edition was published, it included the same authorization software for the extra content that was used for the individual downloads... the advantage to getting all that in the Ultimate Edition format was that 1) you didn't need to actually download it, and 2) it was less expensive than buying each piece separately.

When you launch the game, and if you're logged into the EA site (if you have the "log in every time I start the game" option selected)... the game tries to re-authorize the DLC.  Why?  Not sure, although I am assuming it's part of a decision on Bioware/EA's part to combat online piracy (DRM or Digital Rights Management).

The first time you play the game, you have to be online to activate both the main games and the extra content.  After that, you do not.  The only advantage to logging in after the first time is to sync your player profile with the Bioware/EA servers... which appears to be what crashed tonight.

It's a pain, I know... and one of the two great flaws in what is otherwise a sterling single-player game (the other being the clunky coding which hogs some system resources and causes crashed for some).

So yes, even though you purchased all the extra content all at once, and even through you have it all on disc, it still uses this rather irrational (IMHO) authorization scheme.  Unfortunately, there's no indication that the developers will patch the game to use a simple disc check for Ultimate Edition DLC, as the main game uses.

I just disconnect the modem, start the game, load the saved game, then reconnect the modem. Seems to work just fine.
