This is just bull****, I've tried everything on all of the support forums (tried logging out first) but once your DLC is marked as unauthorized nothing you do can get it reauthorized. I had Auto-login on and the EA Downloader version of the client... I even tried restoring my game files from a previous backup of my hard disk but even when I do that and try to play logged out it doesn't matter. I still get unauthorized.

I guess I'll play some ME 2 this weekend? Or maybe get something else done...

So, yes, Bioware did, in fact, make a single-player game with addons that you cannot play when their servers are down, providing you log on through the game during the time period in question.

Because this myth just needs to die...

Guess what I just did. I started DA while logged out with everything authorised. Then I logged in just to see everything unauthorise. Then I logged out again and all DLC was authorised again and I could load my save. Why? Because if your DLC is properly installed and authorised you can always play offline.

1000 years from now when EA doesn't even exist anymore and my computer won't even understand whatever IP protocol passes for the internet - an archeologist wil be able to dig up my machine start up the game and continue playing my game of DA. And there are no differences between any editions - it all works the same.

The last couple of weeks I've been playing DA:O and yesterday when I tried to run the game - after I logged in - it just suddenly stopped working and asked me for an authorization for my DLCs. You are wrong.

Well, I am able to get in again now — the logging out thing kinda worked. Skipped the intro movies and quickly signed out before it got a chance to verify, and received no "unauthorized" messages. Unfortunately none of my DLC items (including Shale) had any textures, but after restarting the game (with the log in automatically option disabled, as it shall remain evermore) things seem fine and dandy.

Which is weird, because I tried the same thing about a bajillion or so times last night to no avail.

Gotta admit this is a pretty sorry state of affairs... at least considering that the only way players are informed of the servers being down seems to be by having to come to these forums (before doing so I half assumed some glitch had caused my game to disable completely, since I was still able to log in to my account okay, and so assumed it was a problem on my end).

In any event, I can safely say there's not a chance in hell I'll be signing into an EA account ingame again if I have a choice.

I myself passed 2 hours trying to think of an account I might have used to install the DLC.... Then I came to the forums and swa it was not me... At teast is good to see that the players help each other. As for EA/Bioware tech support there's none to be found! This is the kind of bad news that can throw companies down you know? Bad advertising on the Internet as always been a company killer.

You are a bore. Folks (like myself) come here to try and get answers when we need help. Most people offer suggestions when they can. Some of the suggestions help, some don't. The logging off suggestion did nothing for me. The suggestion re: changing the addins file did the trick.

As for having the dlc properly authorized and installed: I let the installer do all the work and never changed the default settings. I also never dl'ed any mods or hacks. As for proper authorization, the game worked for months without a hitch until yesterday. Further, EA's own page tells me the dlc is authorized while the game (prior to the fix) said it was not.

To all the folks making positive effort to help others in the community, much thanks for getting my game going again.

To the bore, I sincerely hope you just have a bad case of internet courage. If you treat people the same way in your real life, I would imagine you've found yourself on the wrong end of a fat lip or black eye (both figuratively and literally) on many occasions. I feel sorry for you. All the same, I'll just ignore you from this point on.

What makes this news even less enjoyable is this whole weekend I assumed it was the game. I reinstalled it and immediately patched it and now I learn the servers are down for maintenance. This after I I had purchased add'l DLC on top of my base game. Really? And the only reason I started the game again was to import a new character to start a new DA2 game with.

Whats the stance on 'cracking' a game that you already own? Im seriously starting to think that if I buy single player game, I'll just use cracks to break DRM and enjoy the experience without this hassle... It'd be nuts to be procecuted for cracking a game you own... right?

I find it a bit frustrating that BW didn't have an official statement regarding this. I know that EA is supposed to handle customer care, but I think it would help us to know that there's something going on rather than trying every trick in the UNOFFICIAL DLC troubleshooting guide just to find out there's something wrong with the servers. Find it hard to believe that a helpful forum user's thread was stickied instead of them actually making a thread like that. LOL

And I was very happy about the Sequel Celebration for DA2. oh well.

This partially works.  It let's me play, but all of my equipment from the DLC is gone.

I cannot speak for Bioware, of course, since I'm just a gamer like you.  I created the "Solutions Round-up" because I came to these forums several months ago looking for some technical advice, and many folks here were very helpful.  They helped me solve my problems.  So I tried to return the gesture in kind.  It becase clear that there was a lot of good information on this forum... it was also clear that it was nearly impossible to find.

The request to sticky that post was made after several people suggested it.  I'll note it was one of the gamer/moderators, and not a Bioware employee, who did the actually "sticking".  I personally welcomed the suggestion, because as my "real world" committments increase, I find I must (or should) spend less time here.

That said, I guess I understand why the folks at Bioware are not active in this forum anymore... after all, the game is more than a year and a half old.  What concerns me more is the fact that the flawed DLC system has remained largely in place for DAO... even though they obviously rethought it for the new game, Dragon Age II.

Still, best in the final analysis to put on a bold front and plow ahead.

So my question is...Since I installed this game from the EA, as well as the DLC, how did I install it improperly? Are there magical steps that I missed and why did tech support tell me to crack my own game because there is a bug from their side causing things to be unauthorized?

I really would just like to enjoy my game. I picked up DA2 as well the other day and have yet to begin it due to this issue. I'm hoping to log on, register it, and never have to log on again in hopes that issues such as this won't occur again. I love Bioware products but EA is just terrible.

Yes, you're right on those points, the game is old and it is to be expected that support will be lessened as time goes by.

Thank you for your compilation for the fixes. I'm sure many will still benefit from it. I just hope that the game will still be supported when needed (eg bug fixes), as the replayability value is high after all.

I'll just wait patiently though. At least EA's doing something about those servers. (I hope?) :D

There's no magic involved, Bio did not make it so that you can't play the game when their servers are out (which is patently stupid and Bioware aren't that stupid). You can play as long as you log out, if your DLC is correctly installed. You only need to be online to authorise DLC and update characters/acheivements, non of which is required to run the game.

*snip*

This is not entirely correct.  I agree, there is no magic involved, of course.  However... and this is important... those who choose to take advantage of the Social Network's character/achievement function can unwittingly become the victims of an error (or bug, or grand master plan-- whatever one chooses to call it).

If you choose to log in, then you run the risk of not having your DLC properly authorize.  Yes, many times we've seen that this is because a user's PC is not running properly, causing the background services not to load correctly.  But it also happens, as we've seen this weekend, when something goes wrong on the company's end.

As far as editing XML files goes, I too dislike the idea.  But I'll also note that EA/Bioware has posted this as a viable option... viable at least to counter their decision not to address this potential pitfall directly.

I have always been skeptical when people blast EA/Bioware without just cause.  This is one of those rate times, however, that I think some users' angst (if not the childishness sometimes that goes with it) is justified.

In a perfect business world, someone from EA corporate will look at the amount of overtime the company is paying fgor this weekend and says, "you know, it might be cheaper if we go ahead and fix Origins so this doesn't happen again. It would be more cost-effective in the long run."

But what are the chances?  Oh well... it's a dream, at least.

This seems like a bit of an embarassment for the company. Least they could do is to give some sort of an official acknowledgment of the problem on the forums and let us know they are working on it. Seems like some people are pretty angry about this - I'll probably join them soon if this doesn't get fixed...

I actually don't think there is one.
I did PM a couple of the more accessable Moderators asking for soeone to do just that, but they can't be on here all the time.
I doubt we'll be seeing anything "Official" & if we do, it'll probably be after the problem has been corrected.
Don't hold your breath for any kind of Apology, either.

Well first time I've ever had this issue and I have to say I was annoyed and a bit panicked at first. But thankfully some one had already answered it when I decided to check the forums first, so hopefully they'll have it fixed soon enough. I'll try the fix off logging out and trying the game again.

The XML edit seems to have worked for me, thank-you. It really irks me that I have to do this work-around since everything worked perfect Thursday. All I did between Thursday and Friday was turn my PC off at night and back on Fri evening. At which point nothing worked.

As an observation, when I check my profile, then select "Registered Game Content" it lists a BUNCH of DAII DLC items. As I don't own that game, and not sure I will purchase it, it seemed curious to me that my account now lists DAII DLC. Further more the 'more info' link adjacent to it says:
This content has now unlocked in your game. To see the content:
1. Run Dragon Age II.
2. Please ensure you log in with the same account you used on the social website.
3. Verify the content appears in the Unlockables screen by selecting Extras on the Main Menu, then Unlockables.
4. Start a new game or load an existing one.
5. The items will appear in a chest in your house. Follow the instructions in the game journal.

Is it possible that the EA servers, in creating a WRONG link to DAII DLC, screwed up the VALID link to my DAO DLC?

At any rate, thanks for the fix, so far so good.

Hmmm... I don't think so, for two reasons:  One, that content has been listed there for a while.  Bioware/EA seems to have decided to give DA2 bonus content to everyone... which makes sense, if they're trying to get you to buy the game. Frankly it may also be easier from a programming standpoint-- instead of weeding out selected users, give it 'em all.

Second, the server issue appears to be affecting DAO but not DA2.  Since DA2 uses a different means to authorize DLC (no in-game downloads, etc)... I doubt the issue many are experiencing is related.

Good for you. But my Ultimate edition won't work. I've tried that. It doesn't even log me in automatically, and it's still unauthorized. I've been playing it for weeks and never had a problem. I haven't messed with anything until just now to try and get it to work, because once it logged in, it unauthorized my stuff, and that's that. It hasn't changed, no matter what I do. I tried turning it on without the internet hooked up--no dice. The fact that your one copy of the game is somehow working does not mean every other person on planet earth who has an issue is a moron. So, since your game apparantly works 100% with no problems, why don't you leave the tech support board, so those of us screwed for no reason can wallow in misery? Thank you.

Thanks for your reply Deathwurm.

I hope they fix this soon, I just bought the Ultimate Edition last night. I will definitely NOT log onto the servers from now on, unless completely necessary. The fact that they're not keeping their playerbase informed on the matter is a horrible way to handle things.

I would be quite happy with a statement about the matter. Tech issues happen, bad PR shouldn't.
