Fix it Bioware!

And the tons of bugs this game has

Indeed it does, it's weird that I get more crashes in this game than in more graphically demanding games like both mass effects.

Just wanted to add a comment to this page to add to the list of people unhappy with this situation.

DRM truly is a pointless endeavor in every way. If a game is truly great, then people will buy it. I could list examples of games that have succeeded greatly WITHOUT the use of DRM but I'm not sure I'm allowed.

Why does a company pay money to incorporate DRM? Presumably in the hopes that 'potential money' isn't lost by people pirating, but of course all it really does is ruin the game for those that DO pay money in buying the game.

Games, software, films, music, it seems will always be pirated, so why put a system in place that 'attempts' to block those people when all it does is harm those that want to pay the companies and want to play the game?

A completely mindless approach to gaining profit.

Ok dear geek-gaming comrades. This is the relevant excerpt of my CHAT with a nice EA tech support representative.

*Snip*

Roddy: Hi, my name is Roddy. How may I help you?
Mage Solona: Hello Roddy, thank you for taking my case.
Mage Solona: I am sorry this has fallen to you (as I know you're not responsible) but I'm very upset about an issue that has been going on since Friday with Bioware's Dragon Age DMR servers.
Roddy: May I know your issue?
Mage Solona: I bought Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition on Friday, and to this moment I haven't been able to play the product.
Roddy: Are you facing the unauthorized error message with the dlc?
Mage Solona: The social website of the game has numerous threads about the matter, and yet there is no official word, or ETA on the solution. I've spent hours and hours on the forums myself, frustrated not knowing when I'll be able to actually use the product.
Mage Solona: Yes.
Roddy: I want to let you know that we have received contacts in this regard from some other players as well and we have already reported the issue to development house.

Roddy: It seems to be a temporary issue,
Mage Solona: It is quite upsetting as I've spent so many hours researching the issue. Including several hours trying to troubleshoot thinking it was a local issue...
Roddy: I do really understand your concern

*Snip*

The rest is just me ranting a little bit more, and Roddy being very nice and reassuring. As well as providing me a $20 coupon for the EA store. I really prefer to have had my invested time frustrated with this, and zombie-like stare at the DLC section within Dragon Age... but at the very least Roddy was a nice fellow...

Doesn't mean I'm still not just as upset.

Roddy: I don’t blame you for being anxious, had I been in your place, I would have reacted in the same way.
Roddy: It should be fixed with 48-72 hours.
Roddy: As you are a loyal customer so for all this inconvenience I want to offer you $ 20 discount coupon

*Snip*

Seems they changed the 24-48 hours to 48-72 hours. I hope the issue doesn't prolong until tomorrow and then it gets changed to 72-96 hours.

-- So there... I really, REALLY hope they would just fix whatever issue they have...

Frustratedly,
Your friendly RedundantCookie.

I guess it depends who you talk to. I was just on chat support and was told to check back in 24 hours and that it 'will' be fixed 'very soon'.

They didn't offer me anything though. I guess they don't see me as a loyal customer, regardless of buying their games for years. :(

Xanny-B, sorry to hear that. I guess it depends on the rep. Also after he told me it would be fixed in 48-72 hours I made a long pause. So basically he broke the one minute silence with that offer probably to hurry up and finish my session (and my possible longer rant - which I ended up giving anyways).

My house is now as clean as it has ever been (thank you Blackout Sat/Sun?). Still can't play. I guess I'll go... wash my car?

RedundantCookie, thank you for posting.

At least this shows that EA has finally managed to effectively inform SOME of their own support staff about the real cause of all these DLC problems. When I faced the "unauthorized-content-problem" yesterday, I was told to reinstall the game. I have been staring at a blank DLC screen ever since.

Just found this thread.... This explains why I can't use my DLC...

I'm a software developer myself (not game development, but the non-glorius kind. The kind which makes sure your passport gets recognized at the airport and such) and I've never understood why people program these absurd license checks.

In the end since the license check code gets executed on a PC you don't control people can break your license checks. No matter how many online servers it connects to, no matter many thousands of tripwires you program in to your application to prevent crackers from disabling you license code its not going to hold. What will happen 80% of the time is all the thousand-and-one checks and tripwires you installed to keep out the crackers are going to bite your paying customers in the ass. Like what happend here.

Now the non-paying customers (the people who use the cracked application) are ironicly almost never effected by these tripwires.

I have absolutly no understanding for this outtage whatsoever. You made the choice to implement it like this Bioware, the kind of control you wanted comes with responsibility.

I am amazed that BioWare has left the outage go for so long. They must have let the people who know how to fix this go home for the weekend.

Assuming that this outage took out their primary and secondary authorization server (I'm guessing at their topology), it doesn't take two days to stand up a new server or route around a network failure if they have been taking proper backups. I could go on, but I won't.

I'm another software engineer and have worked through some bad outages.

This really reflects poorly on BioWare as a company.

I agree.  I used to work in the QA department for a bank and a situation like this would have gotten us in really big trouble.  The ATMs went down one year on Christmas Eve and my team paid for that for years becuase it was our job to forsee every single possible situation that could possibly occur.  And then it was our job to fix the situations that did occur (becuase, really, I'm not Omar the psychic and couldn't forsee everything) in less time than humanly possible.  BioWare or EA or whoever is responsible for this has really dropped the ball, but if they don't think it will effect their bottom line they're not going to put the energy into fixing it that we would like to see.

OK, so enough of that.  Back to my origami.  I think I'll make an Alistair, Morrigan and Dog along with my dragon.

I'm kind of surprised that no game news sites have been reporting on this, at least not the ones that I visit.

Seems like a pretty MAJOR problem and i'm sure there's a lot of people who don't visit these forums who have no idea what's going on.

Even if their staffers are avid DAO fans, they probably don't visit these forums too often.  People need to post about this issue on the game news sites themselves and contact them directly, when possible.  Wouldn't it be nice if EA/Bioware got calls from places like Joystiq, IGN, and others come Monday morning?

God I hope so. At least it means getting their asses in gear.

It's irritating when they give us the runaround, but it'd be quite damning if they did it to the to them! Especially with the general bad taste that seems to be generating around EA/Bioware these last few weeks judging by comments from people that don't even play their games!

I've tried almost every suggested fix on this "bug" forum. I've reinstalled the game (to include that most recent save on my backup external hard drive). I've called the company. Perhaps next I should try building a fire, skipping out a rain-dance, & swinging a rubber chicken over my head.

At least I did learn one very valuable lesson starting about noon yesterday: If it's a game you like, NEVER EVER download any add-ons...even if they're free...even if the company pays you...even if it'll imbue you with magical powers & a 15 inch pud.

I used to say that Bioware could rape me and leave me for dead in a ditch on the side of the road and I would still buy their games.  Now, they can't leave me for dead.  That's where I draw the line. They would have to, at the very least, bake me a cake if they left me for dead.  At least until Old Republic comes out.

My sob story:  The kids had a day off of school on Friday so I decided I would have a video game day with them.  They took turns on the XBox 360 and the Wii and the desktop and I was going to sit and play DA:O all day on the laptop.  My brother and neice came over along with my nephew and one of my kids' friends.  THEY all got to play their games but did I?  No.  I did not.  My life is so unfair.  What's going on in Japan pales in camparison.Image IPB

perhaps we should start applying pressure on both companies by alerting any game magazines/blogs/websites that would be interested in what is going on.  Could make a good anti-drm example or even article

You got it!  It will be so authentic that your mage will be able to cast fireball.  But only fireball.  Because if calling on the mages in Denerim during endgame has taught me anything it's that mages LOVE fireball.
